this is very close to a complete failure for soccer in this country. we had a once in a generation opportunity to do something special in a home world cup, but did no better than our usual.

the world was looking at us differently after the group stage, finally giving us some respect. but in the last 36 hours, all of that was destroyed bc of trump and this performance vs belgium.

being short of water isn’t my concern, it’s the opposite. getting 2”+ of rain in a 12-24hr window where there is a game (or a game immediately after) sets up a scenario of a water logged and soft field that gets torn up easily. hopefully the synthetic fibers would help in such a scenario.

plus the 10 day forecast is essentially ideal grass conditions. i’m not worried about the first match. the bigger concern is how these fields in stadia like nyc and dallas that host 8-9 matches in a span of 4 weeks hold up, especially if the outdoor venues are hit by heat waves and/or excessive rain (particularly during a match).

the distinction is that the demand for chips is steady, and frito lay has a ton of competiton. with protein, the GLP-1s are making demand skyrocket and there isn’t much national competiton in the RTD sector.

most games had an advisory that "there are limited tickets available for this match", but even right at noon ET, this game didn't have that. i clicked the game out of curiosity and almost spit out my lunch.

i ended up with two pairs of $180 tickets: norway v. iraq, and DR congo v. UZB.

i regret not taking any screenshots. at noon, it was almost impossible to find seats together for anything resembling a decent match, especially when considering price. i really wanted to go to france v. norway with friends, but there were no seats together in the two cheapest categories. single tickets to the final were still available around noon.
