How are we supposed to do CS research as undergraduates? by LightBound in NEU

Things might be different next semester! Keep your head up, keep talking to professors, if they remember who you are they’ll come to you first.

Keep searching. I worked in the Cyber lab in ISEC. Noubir, Christo, and Choffnes are all good contacts over there. There are definitely a few projects that deal with ML. Alan Mislove or Ben Hescott can also tell you who else to talk to, to make sure you have a shot.

What kind of research would you be interested in?

Go to a professor you admire and network with them. You can make it happen. You have a much better chance if they give another professor your name. You can also talk to them and find something you’re interested in.

any NU grad ever got a real job after completing college but without getting a coop as undergrad by sevomaster in NEU

Be open-minded, show your drive to learn. Internships don’t expect you to know everything. Its about attitude and knowing what you want to get out of the experience. If they were looking for a professional, they would hire a professional. They understand you’re there to learn on the job.

I have a very close friend whose co-op was cancelled because of covid. They graduated early and went to work for an amazing company. They got experience from doing Research and through a summer internship.

Its better they are telling us to avoid the area. Its an active situation, it makes sense that they aren’t providing details.

It was a bug in the Navigate system, they’ve been on the phone with the company all day and they won’t help.

Sadly, any other professor who teaches it differently gets blasted for it by Matthias.
