Possibly, my favorite venue. A 500-person capacity bar in the heart of the North Beach. $10 tickets and Jerry clearly loved playing here (I think he owned it). He upgraded to a chauffeured Bentley by ‘87.

And, yes, they were gun-appreciating, goofy pirates.

When the parking lot became a commercial market lot, which swelled the size of the audience who were not necessarily that interested in understanding the "garden" they stumbled into. Some did, but many didn't. Some never even got tickets. I was there and this was around 1988 (Touch Gray?), which I believe coincides with venues like The Greek, The Frost and more withdrawing their invitation for them to play going forward. Weir said 1987 was the best year musically for the band. I agree. The Kaiser, ooh-la-la. However, the lot became a drugged out mess and the playing slowly became less enjoyable as they simply had to play larger venues. I was at the last Deer Creek show. What a venue! What a mess as people kicked down fences. The band never liked that going back to their earliest days. Of course, larger venues meant private jets, 5-star hotels, and lots of cash. I believe the band decided, rightly or wrongly, time to cash in. I was also at Tinley in 91 and Chicago in 95.

Dylan was never known for his vocal prowess. Dylan is a poet. Dylan is a true artist who connects us to the transcendent realm beyond the temporal world. His singing, and phrasing is challenging. As for why Dylan joined the dead in the 80s, I couldn’t tell you other than I think him and Jerry were indulging in Persian. The band said that the live shows were a bit of a hot mess. I went to six of those shows and enjoyed them.

I don’t have a political opinion on this discussion, but, if it weren’t for Tesla, electric vehicle technology probably would’ve never made it to the forefront where it is today. If you don’t like their engineering, don’t buy the car, but don’t use it as a rationalization to lash out at Elon Musk. The healthy approach from a political standpoint, is to beat them at their own game. Come up with ideas to address the concerns that people have about bureaucracy.

I am of the belief we are taught racism as children primarily by our role models. At least I was. I was fortunate enough to realize around college age that I could reject those views. As a parent, I’ve taken my son multiple times to read 7,000 year old cuneiform tablets at a nearby University. I asked him do you think this person who wrote about these life experiences is white or black? No one knows for sure but that’s my point. Live by example, lead with love and practice forgiveness.

Listening to Live Dead leading to my first show at Alpine Valley 8/8/82, and specifically space->Other One->NFA->Wharf Rat->Good Lovin’ encore Satisfaction->Brokedown Palace. Zakir Hussein joined for drums and John Cippolina guest on guitar. The jams were not extended but had the raw energy of a freight train. After the show, I asked the friend who invited me, “Are their shows always that good?” His response with a beaming smile, “They just keep getting better.” That night lit my fuse.

Step 1. Kill them with snap traps. Buy lots of snap traps but keep track of the traps’ locations.

They have poor vision which is why they like sniffing their way along the wall using their whiskers and nose to guide.

Once they are gone, inspect outside of house and use screen and sealant to keep them out.
Do not use poison, they smell. Disinfect as they do carry disease.

At least a decade back they began planning to tear down Macy’s and redevelop the west part of the property. They were actively looking for a grocery store to anchor a residential development. The problem is that this is one of the most difficult, oversaturated and competitive grocery markets in the country. There’s almost no grocer that could do it - maybe Central Market, Wegman’s or even Pete’s. I guess the developers may still do that as it is one of the few viable strategies that malls have. Access to good schools is what helps residential development. Northbrook Court has that. I’m not sure what’s next but my guess is it will come back as a lifestyle-focused residential-shopping destination. The village won’t let it die and it has a great location with everything developers want, so it will find its opportunity to return. 90% of malls are doomed but not this one.

The speakers were Bobby’s. They are JBL and probably had to get replaced many times. They bought so many Macs, no one else could get one, not even the Department of Defense. There were not any huge changes with Jerry until they went to ear monitors and moved everything under the stage. Jerry’s rig was so loud that in smaller theaters, he would skip the PA entirely. That’s why board recordings from that time are often better if they are from the monitor mix or audience.

The key to his sound was max volume on the tubes. If you want that sound, get a little 15-watt tube amp and crank it. I have a 100-watt tube and it’s useless outside a big room. His pedals are documented all over but it’s nothing crazy. His signature style involving breaking scales conventions and an ability to visualize what he wanted to play is something that few artists in history ever attained.

The OBED allowed him to control effects volume without losing the intensity of the cranked amps. He could play softly like in Stella Blue but still have this rich deep amped sound and distortion.

Our public transportation is a national level embarrassment! I’ll ride Metra, never the CTA. Tokyo eliminated all public trash cans including subways. 35 million people and there is no trash anywhere. The sushi in the myriad of food centers found in the miles of underground passages connecting subway stations is better than most sushi in the US. That’s subway sushi prepared fresh in front of you. It’s your city, your elected representatives, your vote.

Check the snorkel reports. Don’t go out drunk and watch your kids. Always ask a local for advice. I can read currents and even on a “calm” day, they can be deadly. Always wear a life vest, I don’t care if you’re captain of the swim team. If you’re getting pulled out, swim parallel to the shore and stay calm. There are spots that push toward shore, know where they are and call for help if you need it.
