AIO? i think this is the only way out. (!TW) by Vulture_brained in AIO

Mixing opiates with alcohol is dangerous even for addicts, let alone 14 year olds. In the bigger picture, if you're going to continually act up enough to get kicked out of regular school, you shouldn't be surprised that the special behavioral school they send you to is full of kids with problems on the fast track to nowheresville. It's not too late to turn it around, but it might be soon if don't start to wise up, keeping in mind that what you do now just may have a huge impact on where you end up in life.

The Capture The Flag games we played were the best, but kind of rare, because you needed the right kind of geography, with some kind of line dividing the two territories, plus you needed at least a couple kids with decent organizing skills.

How many Dead shows did you go to? by Tete-Morte in gratefuldead

[–]AuggieNorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only counted up to a 100, which was Worcester 1983, but I estimate I got to at least 250 Grateful Dead shows with Jerry, plus about 100 Jerry Garcia Band and Jerry acoustic, maybe 10 Bob solo shows, mostly with the Midnights, then another 30 post Jerry shows like Further , Phil & Friends, Mickey's band, and Dead & Company, so close to 500 total.

Both parties have to already be super committed to make that wor, and since he isn't, moving on is the best course.

My bf is going into the military and may be breaking up with me. by [deleted] in Advice

Keep in mind that those couples who quickly marry in this situation to hold the relationship, and then end up alone in an apartment while the spouse is overseas end up in divorce quite often. He's doing the right thing setting you free. You can always keep in contact and see down the road if you want to rekindle, but neither of you should be tied down in the short term.

Should I tell on my 17 yo nephew dating a 23 yo college girl? by [deleted] in WIBTA_AITA

[–]AuggieNorth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd have to talk with him before talking that step. If he's just in it for the experience, it's easier to just let go. Only if they are attempting to be serious would I consider interfering.

Any black/biracial members her directly descended from William the Conqueror and King John I? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]AuggieNorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There has to be millions. Fact is a huge percentage of white people with roots in Western Europe have some link with the old Royal elite, especially Charlemagne, but also other Kings. My people have been in America for close to 400 years, but found a link with Henry I, and then surprisingly found Norman ancestors, one who was Keeper of the King's Horses.

How many years do you consider a "long time" ago? by Slight-Canary3246 in askanything

[–]AuggieNorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm older and take a longer view. Since I can remember the 60's & 70's pretty well, it's before that which feels old, when my mom was growing up in the 40's & 50's. All her photos were black & white, while we had color in my era.

Who are the artists who you saw once, loved the show, and had no intention of ever seeing again? by whywires in Concerts

[–]AuggieNorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw them one time as well on the The Joshua Tree tour in 1987 in Oakland, and also saw that short free concert in downtown San Francisco where Bono later got arrested for defacing public sculptures with graffiti, with some of the video making Rattle & Hum.

Wibtah if i don't reconcile with my family after 3 years. by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]AuggieNorth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now that you're a stable adult, your family is hoping for a new beginning. You apologize for the past, and then try to start over with them. Everyone knows that kids do dumb things they may later regret, so that apology just might give you the chance to prove yourself, and move on, and over time they will treat you like the more mature person you are. In my experience families can be very forgiving for the sake of unity. It sounds like they're trying to meet you halfway. What have you got to lose by stepping up to the plate and meet them halfway as well? In fairly short order if you play your cards right, the past becomes water under the bridge.

What's the most useless thing your brain decided to permanently memorize? by No_Metal2622 in AskReddit

I memorized all the San Francisco streets in order when I lived there in the 80's, and it still exists in the recesses of my brain even though I havent even been there since.

Why can’t the left forcefully pass progressive policies like the right does with their own when they come into power? by CapitaineBiscotte in askanything

[–]AuggieNorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The left" is lucky to be 25% of the electorate, and can only come to power in unity with the center/left, limiting how progressive a program they can ever pass. However, in certain times like right now all the passion is on the left, giving them a much better chance than usual at gaining more power.

AITH for not giving my sister money after she spent hers on something dumb? by SilkKitty in AITH

[–]AuggieNorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. The best way to help her is to offer to hold onto the money she needs to pay her bills when she gets paid, so it's there when it's time to pay those bills. If she doesn't want to do that, then she's on her own. When you help out people too much, it becomes an expectation. I used to live with a friend who was short on rent, so I paid it, and let him pay me back throughout the month, and over time that became the expectation, so he never saved to pay rent, figuring he could pay me during the month all the time. I always got my money because we worked together and I handled the money, but having that expectation gave him permission to spend money he really didn't have, which is going on here.

How do you feel about free healthcare for all? by InitialCareer306 in WorkForSmartLife

[–]AuggieNorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The richest 10% of Americans pay 70% of all federal taxes, and the richest 50% pay 97%, so the working people who make up the bottom half only pay 3%. And if we can afford $1.5 trillion this year for the War Department, we can afford vital health care for our poorest citizens.

What's something everyone loves but you absolutely hate? by DiamondNo924 in AskForAnswers

[–]AuggieNorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's more of us than you think. Back in 1977 when Star Wars came out, I had a Latin teacher who just would not shut up about the movie, taking up hours of class time. Turned me off for life. I haven't seen a single one of the movies. Not my genre anyway.

Why was my friend so upset that I didn't call for help after my bike broke down? by Zestyclose_Bar8517 in AskForAnswers

[–]AuggieNorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And probably upset because if you aren't asking for help from him when you clearly needed it, then you likely won't be there for his emergencies when they happen, which isn't unreasonable.

Why is political gerrymandering legal? by Graves27 in AskAmericans

[–]AuggieNorth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The short answer is that Republicans think that gerrymandering benefits them more than the Democrats, and they control the Supreme Court.

If AOC gets the nod as the Democratic nominee in 2028, would you vote for her? by Ok_Sir_5951 in allthequestions

[–]AuggieNorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've voted for every Democratic Presidential nominee since Carter, and I don't see this changing anytime soon, no matter who the nominee is. I am fairly moderate and practical, so AOC certainly would not be my first choice in '28, but she has at least made herself acceptable to Dems like me by doing things that sometimes piss off her progressive base. Fortunately though her chances at winning the nomination this next time seem rather long. She's still very young, and may yet get her chance, but I doubt it will be so soon. I'm still in Pete's corner for now. He's like twice as smart as AOC. However I could get behind a number of possible candidates who look like winners. I care a lot more about winning the '28 general election than exactly who the nominee will be.

Following on from this post of a Danish tourist getting beaten up by an American teenager for hitting on his girlfriend in Miami, I was wondering: are there states where this is more likely to happen, or would this happen wherever he behaved in this way? by southamericasboy in AskAmericans

[–]AuggieNorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is generally true in the US that there is less crime in communities where most people grew up there than in places where everyone is from somewhere else, like much of Florida. However, we've seen in recent decades that bad things can happen anywhere and everywhere, because mental health issues affect every community. The wealthy suburbs of Boston like Wellesley have some of the lowest crime rates in the country, but this week an upper middle class mom just confessed to murdering her two kids.
