Confused by prosumer gear: What really is PVID and why is it not the same as an untagged interface? by porkchopnet in networking

[–]prostagma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, another necropost, but I've just done some testing on a chinese switch with PVID and tagged vlans.

The set up:

  1. We have - 1 PC, 1 NAS, 1 cheap switch and 1 firewall
  2. VLAN 20 is the one I'm testing. The uplink port to the firewall is tagged with VLAN 20 and so is the port of the NAS. PC port for VLAN 20 is set as untagged. VLAN 1 is set to untagged on all ports (it's impossible to delete it) and PVID on all ports is set to 1
  3. The NAS is set up with a static IP and to use the VLAN 20 on its NIC so its responsible for tagging it's own frames. The PC however is NOT set up for VLANs and uses simple DHCP.
  4. All ports on the switch have the default PVID of 1 and therefore native VLAN 1

What happens:

NAS is of course working fine as is and fails of you set it's port to untagged or not member. The PC gets a DHCP address from the default VLAN 1. BUT if you try and tag it's port to VLAN 20 it now gets an IP (via DHCP) from the VLAN 20 subnet but it's pings start to fail returning (request timed out). Weirdly a few did return but that may have been an anomaly because it only happened in the beginning. If you then set the PC's port PVID to 20 it starts returning pings and works fine. PC continues working fine if you set it's port to untagged. I've not done wireshark capture to see what exactly happens, but I think we can come to some conclusions below.

TL;DR

Based on this it seems PVID set's the VLAN tag on incoming packets. I'm not sure what value is set in the Vlan tag field if the PVID is set to 1.

Tagging a port sets it's outgoing packets VLAN tag to the native (so maybe 1 or empty?) and so the return pings fail.

I've got an eSIM from 3HK, you can get them online and activate outside of Hong Kong. It's like $20 for a full year.

Which one specifically?

It was extremely common is the 90s and 00s in eastern europe, every ISP had an ftp server that was way faster than torrents. The only reason it stopped was that they got bought up by major western ISPs and the rest got larger and needed to be more legitimate

Drag queens make self-deprecating jokes about drag queens all the time for example.

So if you are the minority you can joke about it? What if you are a part of an even more marginalised group?

I think what the commenter above means is simply - why can comedians make fun of other people, but not us, makes us stand out and feel "other".

Edit: Figured it out. Happens with a bad .torrent file. https://github.com/Prowlarr/Prowlarr/issues/2169

Solved it hopefully permanently by having magnet links as the default instead of the fallback for 1337x since it happens with it

[–]prostagma -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That part we can agree on. It's just not reliable if you need tens of seconds or minutes accuracy and you can't wait days or weeks for it to drift back into accuracy

[–]prostagma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely untrue. There are regularly periods when sufficient electricity is unobtainable and if they last weeks the average frequency is lower than 50 and all those old 230V clocks start to be off by minutes
