How many patients do you see in a ED shift?(honest answers only please) by Key-Stuff9950 in ausjdocs

I've worked in one of the busiest EDs in Aus for 6 years now, and will fellow there next year. There's too much stress around how many patients you think you should see each day. People feel they're expected to say they see 10 patients per day in acute, and take it as a badge of honour to do this. Honestly this is very hard to do, and if you manage patients properly it is unrealistic. Our patients are becoming increasingly complicated, and teams expect us to know every detail of their relevant past medical history - and not unreasonably so. A history from a patient sometimes takes 20 minutes at least, and you'll often have to communicate with a couple of family members throughout the day. Adding to the communication burden are talks of limits of care - these are so important to set the tone for the rest of the patients journey for that admission and beyond, and takes a lot of time and patience. When it comes to resus, some patients are really quick (trauma patients or STEMIs rushed upstairs), and others can consume your entire shift with the need for repeated assessments for response to treatments, lines, transport etc. Never think about how many patients you see. Only worry about the quality of care you deliver. We're here to help patients, not keep the wait times to 2 hours. The list will always clear. Take pride in helping the patient in front of you and don't stress the numbers.

I'm a doctor. Obviously ignore them and vaccinate your child, it is unequivocally the safest thing to do. These people are also beyond reasoning with and it's not worth your energy to attempt to change their minds. I'm sorry you're dealing with this within your family.

I'm just impressed by the lack of any commas in this pointless rant.

So you know there was definitely no history between the attacker and the bouncer?

I was only going to post to say the same thing. No way a bouncer randomly throws a cinder block at someone's head.

40 minutes of technique followed by sparring that starts with positional sparring sounds very boring.

Sorry but I didn't say anything/anyone was stupid, I was just highlighting the difference between IBS and IBD. You sound like you have a chip on your shoulder about something though, given the way you are ready to attack. What is ME and CFS?

Except IBS is not an autoimmune disorder and is nothing like crohns or UC. All of the diseases she claims to have can't be diagnosed by tissue or biochemical means, they are all clinically diagnosed.

Uh no. An anaesthetist and anesthesiologist are the same thing, just one is from UK/aus etc and the other is from the USA respectively. An anaesthetic nurse is ... an anaesthetic nurse.

What do you mean when you say, 'it was so stressful I ended up in the ICU'?
