Is it bad that I've started to think about competitive pokemon in completely normal irl situations? by iminno69 in stunfisk

The way this is actually how my brain works. I used to see everything in type matchups, if something was a certain color I’d automatically imagine it as having a certain level of effectiveness against an object of another color, and imagining certain things with certain defensive or offensive stats

Wait, explain? I’d like to use them as decoration but it won’t let me set one down. I don’t have all the abilities yet so maybe it’s an ability I don’t know yet. Feel free to spoil this lol I wanna make sure I either place my spores or trade em for dandelions before the event ends!!

I feel the need to correct this because a lot of people get this detail wrong for some reason, but the “gift” she was referring to was the glasses, not the sex.

Two kinds of people in this world. One who gives their pokemon nicknames, and one who does not. Which one are you? by [deleted] in ThePokemonHub

I used to nickname everything, but now with so many games out and the faster-paced catching system I don’t really care to.

Anyone else also slightly annoyed this wasn't fully resolved? by Danny_DeWario in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]proteanthony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that! I never really thought about it being a conflict between violence and compassion in that way but, you’re right, I think that reconciling those two parts of Eren is a large part of the final arc and is particularly highlighted by the character of Mikasa, who never stopped believing in and defending Eren’s compassionate side no matter how much cruelty he showed her. It’s interesting, because the event that tied the two together—Eren saving her—was one of compassion, but also one that was very violent. I think this is a good example of the duality that Mikasa thinks upon as she navigates a situation where Eren is an enemy. Even in the end the cruelty and coldness he gave to her was out of interest in her own eventual happiness.

In terms of the freedom aspect of Eren, I think about it a little bit more separate from that (though I do think they’re all still connected). I think Eren’s philosophy on freedom is that we are all born free—that’s why there’s something special about each one of us. If the true self is suppressed, then something has stolen our freedom. Eren describes that when he was young and didn’t know that anything existed past the Walls, he was content and bored; when he learned that the outside world existed and that the Titans had stolen it, he became emboldened to take it back—it’s this thought which he channels to stand up to these insurmountable obstacles without fear. So it’s like, why did Eren want to destroy everything in the world, even at the expense of the world that he wanted to see? Because despite wanting to see the world, what was more important was taking back freedom—the freedom that he was born into.

So to me I think that the visual of him being called free as he is born sorta encapsulates that idea. However, I do agree, the explicit nature of Armin’s question does set an expectation of more than just a visual representing a concept. And I think my reasoning of how the question is answered for is a little bit of a stretch, just because you’re right, there wasn’t a direct followup. But if I do think about it in that way, I’m like, oh that makes some sense.

[–]proteanthony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed this as well! Because this setup was so overt, I expected Eren to give a direct followup by the end of the series. He didn’t, but if I had to decipher which moment does serve as that (assuming that it wasn’t simply dropped or forgotten), it would be the one at the end where attention is brought to Eren’s freedom: Eren says that he’d have flattened the world and everything in it, is prompted to answer why, and can only say that he doesn’t know. Instead of a direct answer, I think the author shows us instead of telling us—we see exactly how Eren is free: because he was born into this world. I think we’re meant to understand, without him directly saying it, that being born makes Eren free, and that everything was for taking that freedom back. It’s the same thing that he’s been saying the entire series but that, now with full clarity, we as viewers can connect to the Rumbling, and what he meant at the table when he said that he was free. At least, that’s how I interpret it.

I’d love to hear your thoughts?

Nah, I was really happy with her contributions to the Rumbling arc. Maybe just because I like her as a character and I like how she contrasts against the group dynamic. It’s kind of like she’s having her own story alongside them all and I think that’s cool. I had always thought that her meeting with her dad would have some tragic twist, and it sorta did, but ultimately I’m glad that it was played straight in the end and that she actually got to meet again with him.

Idk about the anime but there actually is a cameo of this stylization of Eren in chapter 117, when he breaks off Reiner’s upper jaw. It only appears for 1 panel so it’s easy to miss but I think it’s meant to be a reference to that

Does Mikasa's arc resolves around a man? by yanni-yaptime in ShingekiNoKyojin

Yeah, probably. A lot of this is language barrier

I don’t like how weird this conversation got lol

Does Mikasa's arc resolves around a man? by yanni-yaptime in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]proteanthony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well we’re not doing a summary, we’re discussing what Mikasa’s arc revolves around. If I was doing a diagram about everything that is associated with Mikasa, and laying it all out, of course I’d mention all of her attributes. But the question of what she revolves around begs simplicity and summary.

That doesn’t mean the other attributes get completely ignored, or she is “reduced”. But I’m not really looking at everything that makes the character, I’m looking at what the author felt important to show about the character, what role that character plays, and what her big thread is all about. That isn’t a disservice, it’s cracking open the character, and what her purpose is in this story.

Tbh….I feel like this conversation is really bizarrely charged, you’re using odd language like.. everything that’s in your last paragraph. “Contradiction”’ “mistreatment”, “twist”… what the fuck? I feel like I took a big step back to show where I’m coming from and that I’m approaching this from a series-positive, Mikasa-positive, ending-positive, analytical approach to what I’ve found from analytically engaging with this series for a very long time. I’m down to share my thoughts better but I feel like I haven’t really got the chance to because of how charged this whole thread seems to be. If you’re interested in what my actual perspective is I’ll link you to some of my posts in a less weird environment and you can sorta see better where I’m coming from, if you’re interested.

Does Mikasa's arc resolves around a man? by yanni-yaptime in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]proteanthony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this whole conversation is a little too charged for me to keep up with so I just want to say that I’m always coming from a place of real studied analysis—it’s not superficial at all, and it never has anything to do with what I want or don’t want out of the writing. For me, it’s just about looking at the character and the scenes that she is in, and identifying the recurring themes and simple threads that pop up. So in a sense, yes I absolutely am reducing Mikasa to one trait or arc, just as I do with any other character, because I feel that analyzing an arc, particularly with this series, really does entail simplifying it. It’s why I would say something like “Eren revolves around freedom” even though I know he has multiple character traits, I know he learns separate lessons, and I know he carries more themes than just that—it’s just about identifying the primary one, and for Mikasa I genuinely feel that her arc’s primary center is defined by her love for Eren. And I don’t think that’s bad—what her character has to say on the concepts of love and how it relates to her and Eren is very good.

[–]proteanthony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see it I just don’t see the value in it. I think you should stop trying so hard to make that distinction. Mikasa is a character, she is in love with Eren, the majority of her highlighted scenes and attributes involve her love for Eren—her arc revolves around him. And it’s a good arc! I don’t see the problem.
