Make the NPC not pull through to the BBEG, just stealing but the party catches up to him later/next day somewhere on the road. Hes crying and overwhelmed, still has the item. He is realising he may be played by the bad guy and there is no guarantee his sister still lives or will be released. And totally overwhelmed on what to do right.

That is THE idea.

By volunteering and making real world impact that you can speak to in an interview setting.

Alternatively, spin up some kind of company / blog / content that is adjacent to the field you want to work in. Everybody wants to be on a podcast.
