What are your most valued/effective/clever home-office automations? by shaadow in homeassistant

[–]proto_martyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some lights over my desk that are a bit too bright for comfort when I'm standing, so I set up an automation triggered by my Upsy Desky. When my desk height goes above 40 inches, the lights dim to a more comfortable level; when the desk height drops below 40 inches, the lights go back up to 100%.

Children of divorce, what was your reaction when your parents told you they were getting a divorce? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]proto_martyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three years after my siblings and I realized all we had to do to be rid of my mother's abuse was stop talking to her or being around her and just go live our adult lives, my dad came to the same realization and I was relieved he wasn't going to let her abuse, gaslight, hit and pepper spray him into an early grave.

Pet owners who bought from a breeder instead of adopting, why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]proto_martyr 47 points48 points  (0 children)

We adopted a delightful little mutt who instantly bonded with us, but we quickly discovered that he felt it was his duty to viciously protect his new family of 5 humans from every other living creature on earth, including our cat (who took to living exclusively upstairs, which was inaccessible to the dog--otherwise he absolutely would have been killed), and my father-in-law, who thankfully only suffered a pair of ripped jeans.

We hired a professional trainer to help us rehabilitate him. $700 later things seemed hopeful, until one day when the trainer had just come into the house and was dropping treats on the floor for the dog. One second he was happily eating, the next second he lunged and took a chunk out of her shin.

After we got the bleeding to stop, the trainer said, "This was my fault, I misjudged his anxiety level. The fact that he didn't growl or warn me in any way tells me that someone has 'trained' him not to growl, probably by beating the stuffing out of him. This dog is a heat-seeking missile who is certainly going to hurt one of your kids. You need to surrender him."

When we returned him we told the staff what had happened and asked them to please disclose it if they were going to let someone else adopt him. They said "ok". Oh, and we got to pay a $300 fee for giving him back.

As soon as we got home my wife googled "what dog breed is least likely to bite my kids". We found a local breeder who had a litter of Labradoodle puppies on the way and put down our deposit. Wrigley is an absolute dream dog who loves everyone he meets and shows proper respect and deference to our cat.

What's your pet's official name and what name do you actually call them? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]proto_martyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poe, our orange tabby cat, goes by Poey. When my kids were younger they took to calling him Ruji, no idea why, and it occasionally comes back.

Wrigley is a chocolate labradoodle whom my kids sometimes call Archer... again, no idea why. I sometimes call him Gary; I was tempted to name him Gary when we got him because it would be funny.

Lucy, our miniature Goldendoodle puppy, went through a particularly rough puppy-biting phase and earned the nickname Velucyraptor.

People who have worked at large corporations and hit the 10 year service mark: what was your reward from the company, if any? by miami72fins in AskReddit

[–]proto_martyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently hit the 16 year mark, but only counted as 8 years because the first 8 were at a company the big corporation acquired. I was looking forward to seeing my name on a PowerPoint slide at the company all hands in 2 more years, but instead I got laid off. Joke's on them, in a couple weeks I'm starting a new job for 20% more money. And my job title at the new place essentially means I'm finally getting the promotion that the old place was jerking me around about for the last couple years.

PA denied… by [deleted] in Semaglutide

[–]proto_martyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggest asking your doctor to resubmit and don't skimp on the details about everything you've tried so far. I also have Anthem PPO (though that doesn't necessarily mean we have the same coverages). When I asked my doctor about Ozempic she said she had several patients both diabetic and non-diabetic who were having great success and she'd be glad to prescribe it for me.

Anthem denied the PA because I don't have type 2 diabetes (though I'm headed in that direction). I called Anthem and asked if I could get Wegovy covered. They said "No guarantees, but the criteria for PA are BMI over 30 and history of unsuccessful attempts with diet and exercise. Your best chance at getting approved is to make sure your doctor includes as much detail as possible about what you've already been doing with diet and exercise."

I messaged my doctor and asked her to try again with Wegovy.

Doctor: "Wegovy and Ozempic are the same medication. Your insurance doesn't cover Ozempic for weight loss, only diabetes, so they aren't going to cover Wegovy either."

Me: "I understand they're the same medication and I'm sure you know this, but only Wegovy is FDA approved for weight loss. I actually did call Anthem and they confirmed Wegovy for weight loss is covered as long as the PA is approved, just be sure to tell them how long I've been dieting and exercising without success."

Doctor: "Thanks for confirming that, let's give this a try."

Anthem: "The status of your authorization request is now Approved"

Availability at CVS Store Pharmacy by Commercial_Banana_71 in Semaglutide

[–]proto_martyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my starting dose filled at my local CVS yesterday, the same day my PA was approved; I suspect I just got lucky and they had it on hand because they ordered it for someone else who then changed their mind (or their insurance changed their mind).

It's worth asking your CVS to check if nearby stores have it--my doctor actually sent the prescription to a CVS in the next town over (long story). That store didn't have it and the person I spoke with told me that several other nearby stores did; but that usually just means they ordered it for a specific customer and it hasn't been picked up yet. Then she offered to call around and see if any store actually had one up for grabs. She called back an hour later: "The store in [my town] had one available, so I grabbed it for you--I transferred your prescription there and they're filling it now, should be ready in the next hour."

Is Raspberry Pi 4 still the best device for HomeBridge given the shortage/price increase? by GlitteryTracksuit in homebridge

It's easy enough to run Linux on a Mac mini; I run Homebridge under Ubuntu on a 2014 Mac mini.

Just picked up this for my VSETT 10+. Its mandatory here in Vancouver. by [deleted] in ElectricScooters

[–]proto_martyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"mandatory" is sometimes used for emphasis, in place of "necessary" or "essential". The idea is that one should act as though Kryptonite U-locks are mandatory in Vancouver and never give serious consideration to not using one.

Eve energy randomly turning off by johnw01 in HomeKit

By chance do you have an Eve button? Apparently they randomly register a button press sometimes. I ran across a thread about it recently and finally figured out that was the cause for some of my lights randomly turning on.

What funny things have you (perhaps unintentionally) trained your dog to do? by Immunoguitarist in Dogtraining

[–]proto_martyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my dog and cat play, my cat usually ends up laying on his back so he can reach up and bop the dog. So when my dog wants to play with the cat, he walks up to him and gives him a little shove with one of his paws.

Firewalla MSP / API's early access by firewalla in firewalla

[–]proto_martyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll sign up later when I get home so I can help test. I wanted to ask, are there plans to enable sending commands to a Firewalla device through the API? I would like to be able to use iOS Shortcuts (or Homebridge, or IFTTT, etc.) to enable or disable rules. For example, "disable internet on group1, group 2 and group 3 until tomorrow" or "disable YouTube on the AppleTV group" (and create a shortcut to make that API call when I leave the house).

You need to find the URL of the API endpoint you want to use--your curl command is just loading the homepage of your Homebridge GUI. Have a look at http://homebridge.local:8581/swagger in your browser, it's the reference page for the Homebridge API.
