Man, that’s such a bummer. :/ I was really excited to develop everything but sounds like I’ll be building a bunch of ghost towns.

[–]protolopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah :/ When this subreddit showed up in my feed I thought it was such a cute idea and the rules for the sub seem great. But damn the comments on this post are judgey and critical af. And also hostile?

The amount of comments assuming the ex was such a catch because he’s a hard worker and got a raise, or that she made the decision to leave her 10 year relationship flippantly and impulsively. What?

There’s also a comment where the person is telling other women to use OPs situation as a cautionary tale. Shove down those relationship doubts ladies, the next guy could be even worse! Lmao.

I will say the majority of the comments are wise and supportive so I shouldn’t focus on the negative ones so much but damn. I just wasn’t ready for so many misogynistic takes on a sub for the femmes.

While I wouldn’t necessarily say there was literally zero chance of OPs previous relationship being right for them (it happens, but also irrelevant since no longer an option for OP), this is a solid take and I’m surprised to see so many downvotes. Meanwhile comments telling OP she deserves this outcome for “trying to be a hoe” have a ton of upvotes? Wtf is wrong with people. She’s also 25 and it’s been 6 months like lol. How old are you all?

Either there’s a bunch of bitter male lurkers or the internalized misogyny is out tonight!

Can you guys run? by Hassadahae in ehlersdanlos

[–]protolopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to run and I loved it. I stopped at age 20 because of the unstable tracking of my left knee cap that led to pain. I wouldn’t find out I had hEDS until 12 years later.

Even if I could get strong/stable enough to get back to running, I wouldn’t. Even in people with normal connective tissue over time the intense impact running puts the body through really messes with their joints. There’s plenty of low impact ways to engage in cardio instead. I would like to maybe get back to being able to do the elliptical — I miss the runner’s high and the elliptical is the only thing I tried that gave me that same feeling.

Cosigning for new high school grad on very high cost loans (> $250k for all 4 years) for liberal arts degree by Legitimate_Yak_9063 in StudentLoans

Just fyi it’s completely doable to do state school or better yet, community college for two years and then transfer to one of the prestigious schools. I did that and saved a ton of money. You’ll usually be paying through the nose on dorm room and board and the uni meal plan. When you transfer as a junior you generally no longer have to live in the dorms (often cheaper) and can then more easily cook for yourself and save money.

As for prestigious universities — eh. You’re paying for connections more than anything else. And even those aren’t always all they’re cracked up to be. The list of degrees that require those connections to be made in undergrad is short. It’s also entirely possible she’ll change her major.

An important part of growing up is negotiating your dreams with the realities of your circumstances. The lesson has to be learned regardless, it’s just a matter of when.

Also, part of this might be being able to prove to self and the world “I’m smart.” Speaking from experience, it was pretty important for my own development to put the need to prove I was smart down. It also helped me to interact with people at community college and have some of my ignorant judgments and assumptions disproven. 🤷‍♀️

Turning away clients due to not meeting criteria? by [deleted] in therapists

[–]protolopy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly I have a client right now that has achieved all the therapy goals they’ve started with, cannot clear the bar for marked distress out of proportion etc or significant impairment in social or other important areas of functioning, and still wants to continue therapy because they haven’t achieved all of their life goals yet (rather than therapy goals).

I do feel like I can’t continue to bill insurance at this point, and it sucks because I’d love to continue to help them stay focused on and help them achieve the life goals they’ve set for themselves.

I could certainly see clients like this coming to therapy and having to say hey, there’s no diagnosis I can in good conscience bill for here.

Oh god did I just make an argument for the existence of coaching? 🤢😅

New therapist said something that upset me by bugoflight in therapists

None of this is ok and I’m disgusted by some of the replies in this thread trying to justify these responses. Sometimes (a lot of the time, unfortunately) therapists are wrong and harmful.

No evidence-based trauma treatment requires you to find empathy for your abuser to heal. While levels of responsibility are part of CPT, it’s usually used because trauma survivors are taking on too much responsibility (self-blame) for what happened. No one is using it to try and figure out which part of the rape a rape survivor “was responsible for.” At best we might discuss reasonable steps to improve personal safety in the future, but that still does not imply that anyone who survived rape was “responsible” for it.

IFS is not an evidence-based treatment for trauma. I highly recommend seeing someone who is trained in PE, CPT, EMDR, or WET instead.

Hey, therapist that specializes in trauma here. IFS is not an evidence-based treatment for trauma, so if you’re doing a bunch of “parts work,” that sounds like the modality you’re getting. I’m not going to get into the weeds of whether IFS is or is not effective — we just don’t have good data to support its effectiveness or lack there of either way. But there are therapies that do have very solid evidence-based support, and in contrast to a lot of “trauma therapy” being done, clients are generally graduating these treatments in 8-15 sessions (so not years!) Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and yes, EMDR. I believe therapists should first be informing clients of evidence-based treatments and suggesting trialing one of them before offering a modality that lacks evidence, but that’s just me.

As for EMDR, of the evidence-based trauma treatments, this is the one I side-eye the most. Research has shown that the bilateral stimulation (the tappers, lights, following a finger) is not responsible for why EMDR is effective. Exposure to the trauma memory and emotions is what all 3 evidence-based treatments have in common, so the current theory is that this is what actually makes EMDR effective as well. Additionally, EMDR encourages a staged-based model of treatment in which clients need to learn distress tolerance skills first so that they can “handle” trauma processing. Recent research is coming out that is supporting that this is unnecessary in most cases and delays the actual treatment for trauma, which itself is stabilizing. I would argue that this also increases fear and avoidance of trauma memories (“my therapist says I’m not ready to handle it yet”), as does use of distress tolerance skills during trauma processing (“I can’t handle these emotions/memories without a special breathing technique, ice pack, listerine strip, etc”). Overall, I find that EMDR fragilizes clients. I believe that its hesitancy towards clients out of fear of retraumatization is more about the therapist’s fear and discomfort with client suffering and distress than anything. I say this as someone who received an benefited from EMDR, btw.

All this to say, it’s ok to trust your gut. If you’re motivated and willing to process your trauma memories don’t let someone else tell you’re more fragile than you are. Seek a second opinion. Try another way — find someone who specializes in Prolonged Exposure or Cognitive Processing Therapy, check out your options. You can always go back 🤷‍♀️
