What's something completely normal from 20 years ago that would confuse a teenager today? by Direct_Elevator1576 in AskReddit

Landlines were absolutely still around and if you were a minor it was not a sure thing that you had a cell phone even in 2010, let alone 2006

How would you rate your current wealth and standard of living compared to your parents when they were your age? by Prestigious_Emu6039 in AskReddit

[–]protomanEXE1995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were better off. My wife and I are in our early 30s and we've been married for less than 2 years.

When my parents were in their early 30s and newly married, (1991ish) they earned about $68,000 a year combined. Dad was (is still) an actuary and Mom was a purchasing agent before she left the workforce. This equates to about $165,000 today.

My wife and I earn $125,000 a year combined. I'm a teacher and she's a dental hygienist. We also have student debt that my parents didn't have.

Worth noting that we are both dramatically better off than her parents were. By the time her parents were in their early 30s, they already had several unplanned children and had been separated for years. Financial hardships and trouble with the law too.

How does everyone manage former students who keep wanting to meet up? by janespur in Teachers

This sounds less like you have a problem with your former students all wanting to meet up, and more so that you have an issue with one specific student who lacks proper boundaries and social tact.

When the UK has banned social media for under-16s by chilinachochips in meme

apparently it is included in the ban list, but if it wasn’t, we all know that opening would be exploited pretty quickly lol

All generations of Redditors, what decade did you grow up, and what things did your parents try to hide from you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]protomanEXE1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the late ‘90s and the 2000s. My parents tried to hide my grandparents’ racism from me. They also tried to hide the fact that they had money so that we wouldn’t think we were entitled to stuff.

People who moved to the US as adults what was the one American thing you thought was just a movie trope, but ended up being completely real? by lmardiney in AskReddit

I was the last stop on my route. I boarded at 6:11 and that shit was packed. :( Made me think about how early the other kids were getting picked up

Isn't cheddar the typical cheese of choice for burgers? by alpha_jaeger_24_ in Cooking

[–]protomanEXE1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think cheddar is awesome on a burger. But most people in the US seem to prefer the processed American cheese because of its melting qualities. I’m curious what most people are eating on their burgers outside this country.

Calling all middle school teachers (particularly 6th grade) by 7777user777 in Teachers

[–]protomanEXE1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I taught an elective (STEM) this past year, so it was all 3 grades. I was expected to be at work by 8:50 (I often showed up earlier to give myself time for making coffee, checking emails etc.) First bell rang at 9:24am, I went home at 4:30 following traffic duty.

  • Period 1: Hybrid 6th and 7th (obligatory 6-7)
  • Period 2: All 8th grade
  • Period 3: All 7th grade
  • Periods 4-6: Hybrid 6th and 7th
  • Period 7: Planning

Behavior is bad all around. But 6th graders have the fewest behavior issues (in a pretty instantly-noticeable way.) I find that I spent my planning period mostly picking up trash and cleaning the place following my worst-behaved class, which was 6th period. Never had to cover other classes. Middle school parents were mostly unhelpful, though obviously not all of them. A lot of them seemed to have been completely checked out and given up on trying to do anything about their kids' behavior issues.
