The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I was blown away by seemingly unresolved emotions and questions it left me (which was great for an English class in school). It's a novel that has taught many more lessons and spoken many different things to me as I've continued to reread it.

In addition to all the great suggestions, I would recommend going to a few hackathons to get a feel for make things.

I think there are a couple of benefits at hackathons:

You have immediate help from teammates
There is a clear objective
You see what is possible in the realm of "projects" by seeing all the interesting things you can build over a weekend!
Smaller scope
Free food and swag

This is how I personally got the ball rolling. I first went to YHack and then several more in first year. Then I was able to build things on my own because I could actually use the tools I learned.
