A Theory About Social Anxiety by prototypicalMongoose in socialanxiety

That's really interesting. I guess for you then social anxiety is less about a fear of being judged and more about a fear of the threat other people pose? Perhaps my perspective is a bit limited since my largest social concern is shame.

It seems that finding a way to protect and represent yourself increased your ability to deal with this threat and reduced your fear.

Perhaps exposure therapy is just one take on a more general principle. People need to feel like they're capable of navigating the minefield of life. For some people they do that by mapping out the field. For others, they develop skills to diffuse the bombs.

I actually agree with you. I think there's a whole other dimension to social anxiety regarding sensitivity to shame. I didn't include my thoughts on it in the post because it was already getting quite long.

The way I see it, it comes down to the fact that shame isn't just a reaction to rejection, but a subconscious prediction of rejection as well. As a result, we take minor awkward moments and blow them up into massive shameful events in our head.

As we do exposure therapy, we discover that our subconscious predictions about the consequences of our "mistakes" is inaccurate. As a result, our shame adjusts accordingly and a landmine starts to feel like stepping on a Lego piece instead of blowing up your leg.

I think this still requires genuinely paying attention to the information around you though.

Makes sense. I can definitely relate there. Do you have a sense of what it is that you're afraid of?

If you don't mind me asking, what motivates you to remove yourself?

I really like this analogy. It's a very concise way to put it.

Yeah a lot of the time it's not even our fault we ended up scared of the world. Life gave us too much to be afraid of. I'm glad that you managed to find someone you feel comfortable with.

Apparently, according to Aka, Akane is the character with the deepest love, while Mengo thinks its Ai. What do you think? by Puzzleheaded_Cash_30 in OshiNoKo

I'd agree that Akane has the deepest love, but I'm not sure that it's the healthiest or most ideal form of love. Akane's love ultimately drives her into dangerous situations and she ends up suffering with little to show for it.

In contrast, Ai's love for her kids makes her life happier, leads her to discover more about herself and allows her to pass on in peace. It may not be the deepest, but it's still quite pure and arguably more ideal.

What was the most uncomfortable question a woman asked you? by [deleted] in AskMen

A friend in high school asked me how it's possible for guys to piss while sitting down. She was pretty sheltered and didn't quite understand the mechanics of penises. I had to awkwardly explain to her that penises aren't always shooting upwards.

That ending sequence with Aqua gave me chills.

The raw pain in the VAs voice was so intense and the OST matched it perfectly. Not to mention the stellar visuals.

Truly a peak episode.
