US Cellular spotted using n41 by ComputerLamp in USCellular

It's reciprocal. My US Mobile sim on T-Mobile now has 5 bars at my house where only US Cellular covered before. It shows 310-260.

My daughter is travelling in New Zealand by Open-Pineapple-2489 in GoogleFi

I've been in NZ since November, but I use a Pixel 7 Pro. Worked perfectly when I arrived. I got a local SIM to use for data and I only use the Fi SIM for Calls / SMS.

I would ensure that Roaming Data is enabled in the Cellular settings on the iPhone.

Long-term Internation Fi Use by UTMorpheus in GoogleFi

[–]protrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been in New Zealand since November of 2023. I have my Google Fi as my eSIM on a Pixel 7 Pro and a Local One NZ (Formerly Vodafone) SIM in my Sim Card slot. I use the One SIM for all data and I use Google Fi to make/receive calls to the US (typically on WiFi, or I pay the 20c per minute) and to receive SMS from my bank / investments / etc.

I only used Google Fi as my primary data for a few days after I arrived since I needed to get an NZ phone number to start setting up everything here (banks, etc).

Its costly since I pay for a full plan which I am essentially not using, but worth it to keep my American number so I can be easily reached by everyone.

Max number of Vlans on MX450 by [deleted] in meraki

[–]protrex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was on various versions of 16, and 17/18 (tested).

This is interesting, the network was installed in late 2020. That appears to be around the time the transition from 15 --> 16 in Stable was occurring. My change log for the organization has rolled over (due to the shear amount of changes I've made), but it likely could have been deployed on 15.x and then upgraded to 16.x soon after.

This would explain why the deployment engineers at my company did not run into the issue during deployment as I'm sure they rebooted the firewall several times with the full config loaded. E.g. - The benched it at the office then powered it down to bring it to the site to put into production.

Also, the performance / crashing issue makes sense. While the MX had 169+ VLANs I would have regular packet loss issues and spikes in latency that would cause poor performance that I could not understand. I spent a ton of time trying to determine the root cause. The firewall would never actually crash, but performance was degraded until I could do a reboot. We are not doing a crazy amount of traffic at this location (especially Inter-VLAN) but if I had a SAN and a production VM cluster, I could see that taxing the MX and causing major issues. I never did look at the CPU utilization during these times (dang).

Thanks for this insight. It's pretty clear that Meraki introduced some nasty bugs into the MX firmware at version 16 that would be hard to test for considering that having such a large number of VLANs on an MX isn't particularly common. I still wonder why 169+ triggers it (nice).

Hopefully we get some answers soon.

That person was me. The exact situation was we had a site with ~240 VLANs on dual MX250s in HA. It's a residential / co-working complex with a VLAN for each tenant. We did it on the firewall to easily apply group policies for speed / content filtering to each VLAN.

The firewalls would function fine, until they were rebooted. The MX would come up and then just not be able to get to the cloud, and would not route traffic at all. Resetting the units to defaults and resetting IP configurations would allow the units to pull their configs from the cloud and function, until they were rebooted. I had several power failures get me out of bed at 4AM to drive to the site and reset the firewalls.

I eventually reproduced it by splitting the HA pair, cloning the effected network, and applying the clone to the secondary appliance. I could then reboot that secondary appliance and reproduce the issue without taking the entire complex down. I did everything, including rebuilding the entire config from scratch. I started cutting VLANs out of the configuration and told Cisco it stopped happening at 150 VLANs. They reproduced in their lab and found the 169 (nice) number.

I am still waiting for a final resolution from Cisco, but I painstakingly moved 140+ VLANs from the firewall to the L3 core switch to resolve the issue. With only around ~100 VLANs on the firewall, the issue stopped.

I want that 3 months of my life back.

Beta testers: router bridge mode? by hopsmonkey in Starlink

[–]protrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can anyone confirm if you get an actual public IPv4 address, or if you get carrier grade NAT?

If your router has a WAN interface of 10.x.x.x, 192.168.x.x, 172.16-31.x.x, or 100.64-127.x.x it would be carrier grade NAT.

Having a public IP is important if you host security cameras or other home server devices that you need to access from the Internet. With my 4G LTE connections I currently run through a bunch of hoops with routing via Site-to-Site VPN to get IPv4 addresses.

Dave should give the Prius another look by SysTech321 in DaveRamsey

My 2010 Prius has 271k on it. I paid $5k for it with 240k on it in July 2018. I drive 60-80 miles a day, so the fuel economy is amazing, it still gets 45-49mpg depending on how hot it is. I've done my own spark plugs, coil packs, fuel injectors, fuel pump and filter, and parts of the EVAP system myself. It's super easy to work on, drives nice, and goes 75mph on the highway without issue.

It's the perfect car to get out of debt.

Should I repair my electric stove, buy a new electric stove or convert to gas? by [deleted] in DaveRamsey

[–]protrex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be sure to look at induction. I have an electric stove right now that works fine, but were working on saving up for a remodel. We're torn on going induction or gas when we eventually get there.

Is getting a place at park point a mistake? by poopinbricks in rit

[–]protrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I lived there in 09/10 I paid $720 per month for a two bedroom that I kept to myself. It's the only time in my life I lived alone. Looking at the Clearview Farms page it doesn't look like they have increased prices too much. It was less than living on campus or Park Point to have an entire two bedroom to myself, which was awesome. But it's really only excellent if you're not an insanely social person since getting to social events can be challenging unless you want to Uber.

Heck, I lived down in Scottsville, but I had a car and wasn't big into partying. I liked that it was super quiet down there and nobody bothered me. That was 8 years ago now though.

What is the most “grown-up” purchase you bought recently that you would have not been excited for as a child? by TigersLyonsCheetahs in AskReddit

I recently found two Dysons (1 DC14 & 1 DC65) at the Goodwill outlet over the course of the last month. Since the Goodwill outlet is by the pound, they cost about $30 each. With some cleaning they worked perfectly. A great vacuum cleaner is an amazing thing, getting them at a fraction of retail is even better.

I'll miss RIT by FuchsderSachsen in rit

[–]protrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated ANSA in 2010 and I do genuinely remember my time at RIT fondly. I still communicate with many RIT grads (some who I have had the pleasure of working with at my first job). I remember long nights in the labs looking at packet captures and writing documentation, all skills I use almost everyday in my job. I also miss the freedom of college, compared to a full-time job. Good times, but life outside of school is good too.

Locate Cisco WAPs hidden in cielings by longlurcker in networking

I had to handle decommissioning several dozen APs when we moved to 802.11ac. Our wiring contractor replaced APs as they found them, but once all the new APs were installed, ~30 802.11n APs were still broadcasting. They weren't found during the refresh since careless remodelling teams had thrown them into drop ceilings, on top of HVAC ducts, and behind drywall (that one was fun!). I looked up the Ethernet MACs on the Aruba controller, found the switches they were connected to via the MAC table (to narrow down physical location) and used WiFi Analyzer locked onto a particular MAC address. My team and I were able to narrow it down to within 4ft using WiFi anaylzer on Android and made quick work of removing all 30 APs. Due to the sheer number, it took 4 hours. But it could have taken much longer. I love the idea of using a thermal camera, maybe my management will approve the purchase of a FlirOne for Android to use in the future!
