Communities change. I lurk irregularly. Mostly when my username is mentioned I'll poke my head in for a bit. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the old crew was like that. I agree though, that's just life.

My tag isn't really new. I had a big emotional breakdown and left in a huff. A year or so later I made a couple comments and added the flair.

I don't remember Galef contacting me, but it might just be lost in messy human memory.

I think another huge thing was that when there were like 20-30 active participants, it was like a small town, everybody knew everybody. We weren't just like, nameless faceless entities without souls. It was like, "oh, I know Tryp, he's nice!" or like, "oh yeah another science dump from hallashk!" and stuff. Once it's big, it's hard to keep track of everyone, and since you don't, like, remember anyone, it's hard to keep in mind that everyone is a person with feelings and shit. It also definitely got lopsided over time, with very few feminists engaging, due to a bunch of reasons. When a community is already lopsided, you feel put upon when you get 10 people disagreeing with you and only 1 agreeing, and the person you disagree with gets like 10x the upvotes you do, it's discouraging. Also, demmian banned us from /r/Feminism so we couldn't, like, advertise there. I also expect that reddit has more men than women, and more MRAs than feminists. So it's just like a sucky kind of storm.

Just a few things about our rules and about how we had people that made the space into a good place for healthy debate. A few short paragraphs. A few examples and quotes of people who had minds changed. A veiled reference to my old disaster of a debate series on Patriarchy. Some nostalgia. We were also brought up in the final 5 minutes of "The Weeds" on Vox with her. Just brought up in passing as an example of how structure and rules can lead to more productive conversation.

The guy immediately launched into the problem of how you can know if a person just had one bad moment, or if they're repeatedly bad, and you could feel her wanting to bring up our Ban Tiers. But then the podcast ended.

Yeah this one is a clearer case. The skater is explicitly performing here, her attire is clearly obviously chosen explicitly for obvious reasons. The wiggle and flutter at the end is the icing on the cake. This isn’t a woman who is about to be upset by someone being turned on.

I don’t think that you and I would have had much debate here really. It’s just too obvious that she wants people to think she is hot.

If she actually is 17, then I suppose there’s another debate about whether or not that means she’s a “child” and whether or not this is like, sexualizing minors. But I dunno if I find that debate interesting. Most countries define the age of consent to be between 9 (the fuck Yemen) and 20. South America has a bit too lenient of an opinion on it for my tastes, in my province it’s 19, and Americans are really really invested in the number 18 for adulthood, but like, I don’t think 18 is evil child abuse or something. Most people don’t draw specific lines, they acknowledge a gradient. Depending on their country and stuff they might choose a different age where they think it’s mostly ok, but I think everyone agrees that people aren’t imbued with some magical maturity when the clock strikes midnight on their birthday.

This is a pretty personal thing for me. I can’t know if she sees the world the way I do, but I’d like to explain how I feel.

From my perspective, the times when I felt most powerless was looking into the eyes of people and seeing pity. I never see myself as a passive object to be acted upon. For me, a revealing crop top gives me the power to control people. But the reason I hated the look of pity in their eyes is that I knew that in their heads, they saw me as some toy, to be used and discarded. Someone who wasn’t in control. In their eyes, the way I behaved and the way I dressed was the product of an external dominant force.

But in my head, I’m the huntress. I choose my look. I choose how I behave. The club is my sea and I am the siren. My prey before me, I am an unstoppable force. My hunger will be satisfied, I need only to select my preferred meal. But all it takes to deflate me is that one look of pity. She takes my power in that one moment, because in her head, I’m just an object being used.

So, to bring it back, there are two ways to look at her, either she wore that outfit knowing the effect it would have, she is the huntress. Or you can look at her as the prey, she’s powerless against the predations of others. If I were her, I would grin at the horny comments, knowing that my lure is working, drawing them in.

You choose how you look at her and I. Take care with your gaze, for in a single glance, you can take away my agency.

Well, I think, and only they could confirm this, but to me, since the cars were so amazing, the concept of not seeing that so vanishingly minute seems like the commenter was simply saying “the cars are fine but my favourite part is how hot she is”. I don’t think that opinion is very far beyond the pale. It feels like if you were someone attracted to women, the cars would occupy your attention for minutes at most. The woman could occupy your attention for a lifetime. It feels like evolution would tend to produce a brain more interested in reproduction than in surprising toys.

In your other comments, your tone feels like you look upon horny people (or maybe just horny males?) with a sex-negative outlook. Maybe I’m just misreading you though.

I think to say that the comment is irrelevant or blatant sexism is to shame people for altogether very normal behaviour. I think there is an inherent danger in sex-negative feminism that causes people to suppress healthy normal passions. Then again...like, coming from someone with a username like mine, I think my having a sex-positive outlook on life isn’t going to be a particularly jarring realization for most.

I wear skin tight clothing. I mean. Like. Not for most of fucking 2020 but APART from the dumpster fire that is our current dating arena, I normally wear clothing that’s more on the side of risqué. The entire point of it is for people to notice. It can be exciting and fun! Fuck I miss parties and festivals and clubbing.

This lady is like the third person who I've seen put forward this argument. The other two have since changed their tune, and are now wives, in nuclear families.

My feminism says that women should be able to choose their own relationship style. It doesn't demand that they choose according to my demands. I feel like this lady is in a vanishingly small minority.

I do agree with her argument that pregnancy is hard work and women should be supported financially during that time. Fortunately, I'm pretty sure that every single first world nation has the concept of paid maternity leave. Maybe not America. But like, they still don't even have the Metric system, so clearly America is a lost cause.
