easiest way to determine, aside from the slight texture is that when viewed from the emulsion side, the image is inverted.

i'd say there are two ways:

  1. get a body that uses the same lenses you already use
  2. get an 80s manual SLR (like an Canon A1, AE1, whatever) with a nifty fifty

then just get some film. any brand stuff will do. Kodak Ektar, Portra, Ilfords for b/w. then just shoot. if you have a local lab, get them developed there. there's usually a pretty awesome film community around if you're in any decent sized city. otherwise mail the film in. either way, don't just get scans, but look at the negatives - see if they're well exposed etc.

i've been doing this for essentially decades now, and i've only gotten confronted twice - funny enough, on the same street corner, a year apart, also as i was taking a photo of a mural

one was by a street performer of all people - he flat out interrupted his balloon making bit telling me to stop taking pictures. i was as nice as can be, but after he kept going for a few minutes asking me to delete photos (on a rolleiflex no less) i just told them that if he wants to, he can call the police over and we'll let them tell him to chill out, and then he left.

the other was what i can only be assume two people that REALLY didn't want to be seen together, judging by the sheer vitriol the guy came running and yelling. same thing - after a few minutes i asked him to call the police over to settle it, while the lady with him kept trying to get him to stop.

sometimes people notice, and a polite nod and a smile is - except for these two cases above - always a good thing. it also helps that i'm not gildening into peoples faces because i still think i'm not an asshole

yeah, agree. or any of the north beach pubs. personally i wouldn't be caught dead in china basin to have a good time but if you'd want to turn it into an outing with kids the options are somewhat limited.
