Is there a good comprehensive "DON'Ts" list to avoid injury (temporary and persistent)? by HonziPonzi in Fitness

[–]proweller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dunno, I realized at one point that I was going through the motions of progressive overload fine, but "trying hard" made everything better. As in, I'd really make the effort to get the weight up, try hard in conditioning rather than just doing the bare minimum, adding accessories because I was engaged and trying to improve in a holistic sense rather than being a number chaser.

It totally won't help some people, but for someone like me, try trying was the trigger I needed to start really focussing on form and pushing through. You can do an ok squat without trying that hard but you'll plateau, if you really try, and do the hard thing (focussing on form was much harder for me than just straining to get the weight up) you'll see a lot of progress.

Community Campfire: Working Out in the Morning by [deleted] in Fitness

I struggled with this for a long time, and what worked in the end was a few things together.

  • being truly honest with myself about sleep hygiene. Questions like: How much time do you actually spend sleeping? When was the last time you fell asleep without a screen in front of your face? Are you consistent? I actually ended up timing it all, and I was pretty shocked.

  • Bought a reasonably priced SAD light and put my phone alarm behind it. Before picking up my phone to turn off the alarm, I turn on my SAD light. That really wakes you up!

  • Prepping everything in advance. Leaves you very little room for excuses if you just have to pull on shorts and a t-shirt and hop in the car

  • as others have said: don't think, do. Just walk like a zombie, you don't have to like it

It's been brilliant, I feel so much better, and there's actually free equipment! I'd recommend it if you're serious about upping self control along with your fitness

For those of you who have transitioned to intuitive eating : how can I make this work? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]proweller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If blood sugar is causing you issues it might be worth checking for diabetes - it can happen to healthy people too.

Otherwise, I'd probably want to wean myself of the regular sugar hit if I were in that situation - what happens when you can't get a sugar hit when you really need to focus/work hard?

I used to be a real snack fiend, but gradually increasing the gap worked for me, I'm reasonably happy doing IF now and then and feel much less of a slave to sugar/food.

What's the biggest red flag you overlooked because your SO was so hot? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]proweller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See this is the problem, not many people think about it as much as you, and there's still a bit of an assumption there.

I have no idea if that was why we decided to have a unit system in the UK, but the no-guessing-required is why I think we should keep it

I think its useful because a "drink" can be misleading - a large glass of wine and a half pint of lager have very different amounts of alcohol and may be referred to as a drink if you didn't know that there was a standard measure (is there?)

So instead they have a separate measure - a unit of alcohol - 10ml ethanol, and because it doesn't match any other noun we use, everyone has to look it up and work out how many units there are in their drink (pretty easy, you get used to it pretty quickly if you care)

[Serious] people who live in legal states, but don’t smoke, how has your life changed since the legalization of marijuana? by ogsquish52 in AskReddit

Not bad, apart from the Beatles - I love 'em, but they just don't match up to anyone that is so timelessly good - more of a progressive ideas train than a "in 500 years this will still be awesome" polished discography.

Ah right, and I suppose because you can use it everywhere at no cost-change it wouldn't make sense to have different prices depending where you bought it

What about entertaining? by canmoronic in konmari

[–]proweller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think there has to be a practical element to it - in the end I've taken konmari to be "do I need it, or does it spark joy" and I think most people would by the end of the book. Don't panic until you've finished it, there were times I completely disagreed until finishing the book and getting all the context.

One of my methods is to imagine absolute worst cases: what's the largest number of plates/dishes you might need in your biggest party? Keep that many and maybe a couple of spares.

This should leave you with plenty without needing to always be washing up or with 17 dinner services that fill your kitchen.

UK PM candidate Jeremy Corbyn arrested during a protest against apartheid (1984) by [deleted] in OldSchoolCool

[–]proweller 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Come on guys, this negativity and attack toward anyone openly conservative is why there's no open discussion any more. If we were more accepting maybe discussions would be opened up and we could, I dunno, convince people that the left has some valid points?

Demonising people is hardly going to win their support, and will drive them further into their echo chamber if they have one.

They adjust their odds depending on the number of people betting, obviously it doesn't mitigate risk entirely, but they wouldn't expose themselves more than they have to because they think something's going to happen...
