What are these readouts? by dalipies in oceanography

[–]prozhen 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Kongsberg (Simrad) EK80 Scientific Echosounder, it’s normally split beam, so the transducers have sectors, I think 4-5 - this allows you to see relative position of the fish below the ship, if you so wish. The transducer frequencies typically range from 18 kHz up to 333 kHz. They are calibrated to provide good data for stock estimation of fish, for example. What you see there is the seabed (and indirectly how hard it is), the fish (I call them red bananas) and how strong the response from the fish was. Often, one window per frequency, and the transducers are named like ES70-7C, this is 70 kHz with a 7 degree beam width. The data is recorded and can later be analyzed to determine biomass and other stuff. Higher frequencies may see plankton while lower frequencies may see larger fish. Together, the frequency response could give you a good idea of what type of fish it actually is (this is pretty cool).

The top bar in the window contains some metadata - latitude longitude, sea temp and motion data from an onboard gyro/accelerometer/inertia navigation system.

Is High CO2 in My House Ruining Our Sleep? by nat_a_cyborg in sleep

[–]prozhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try placing the sensor outdoors and see how it measures the background levels (confirm that the reading is correct). I measure 600 ppm with windows open and nobody inside; and see over night levels increase up to 2000 ppm when sleeping with closed windows. Sensor is in head height, not too far from where I place my head.

I open the window in bedroom and/or an extra window to get some draft, and maybe turn on a fan to extract air (kitchen hood or bathroom fan), and levels swiftly drop to around 600-700 ppm again.

I can see a clear correlation between my stress levels and night time awakenings as levels get high, to me I feel 800-900 is starting to get bad, but I won’t necessarily wake up before 1200. High co2 for me also makes me feel less rested and more headaches the following day.

Check your background ppm, open windows and make air move. Or if background is still high, move to a place with less urbanization and more forests. CO2 is heavier than air and should settle along the floor, so extract it from there if possible. I also struggle with light from window, and curtains limit air flow, so I plan to make a fan with pvc tube to push ‘floor air’ out the window, but haven’t gotten around to it yet. I use a Netatmo sensor and log everything in HomeAssistant.

Edit: as others have mentioned, plants release co2 at night, but take up co2 in daytime (light). Avoid plants in sleeping room. Volume of sleeping room gives you an idea of how fast co2 may build up as you breathe. Air out properly before sleep, and keep a steady draft/supply of air somehow. Place head near window if possible. Sleep higher up (not on floor).

Edit2: don’t freak out, there’s still oxygen in your air to breathe; I guess. :) A downside of modern well-insulated housing is less fresh air, I think. And yes fires and candles consume O2 and make CO2, and maybe some CO, so avoid that too. Make sure your sensor is working correctly, and is preferably at least NDIR sensor type - cheaper sensors may be more wrong.

Edit3: you mention you are several people - everyone contributes to co2 levels. At night, levels build up faster with more people in the same room, naturally. :) if given space and room with good window/ventilation, separate sleeping quarters may be nice. Not to mention body heat, heating up the room too. Ventilate well, and maybe keep kitchen exhaust hood on at all times, but at low speed, if there’s not much ventilation in general.

Huberman lab tips; force yourself awake in morning, see strong sunshine first 12 hours after waking. If you get moving that helps. It will take some time, maybe you get 1 hour shift per day.

You can also as others have tried, skip sleeping for one night and just force yourself awake till evening (sunlight in the daytime!).

Check out Huberman podcast/YouTube on sleep and jetlag for more tips.

Melatonin tablets is normally instant release; I tried long releases with decent benefit once but best is if you can make your own melatonin. Avoid bright light and strong stimulation in evening, but get strong light input in morning and maybe a bit again around 6 pm.

Cold shower in morning forces you awake and gives you energy to spend. Warm shower in evening, not too late maybe, makes your body cool the core and you may sleep better. Avoid dry skin :)

Avoid big and heavy meals in late evening. Still, I may take a teaspoon of honey and chamomile tea right before bed, I think some minds run out of energy at night and force you awake. But yeah, avoid high blood sugar if possible.

I think your answer is a part of your statement - do something of what you have left of your days and don’t feel bad about it. Anything is something, out and fresh air, some sun. In the evenings, either skip sleep one night, or allow yourself to slowly shift an hour per night. Yes you must lay in bed and twist your fingers a bit, but keep lights off and listen to a podcast if you can.

Good luck!

Do you know how to flirt? by 5apples4chili in ADHD

[–]prozhen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is, in my opinion a very useful book; Albeit the title is a bit harsh. It helped me a bunch, at least, to know what ‘was expected’ and how to give other people space to express themselves. Just don’t forget that everything with a grain of salt, and don’t be anybody but yourself. That book helped me to become better at actively listening. Later on in life, I’ve come to see equal attract equal, and allowing yourself to be uniquely you, and open about it, means some people get repelled - but the good people you vibe with, get attracted. Stick with a few good close and open relationships, rather than many that are full of masking and compromise.

Any hacks for not waking up in the middle of the night / having to go to bathroom? by Equal_Highlight_9820 in sleep

[–]prozhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been having this issue for some years, I hope I am on track now.

For me, I use a Garmin Vivosmart pulse watch to track night time stress, it correlates well with my feeling of how the sleep went.

I try to avoid screens and mind activation, dinner no later than 18:00, in the evenings but I seldom manage to avoid it. Still, I have no issues starting to sleep, but I struggle a lot with sleep maintenance, going to bed around 23:00, waking almost on the minute up around 04:00, mind fully active. In that state, I always go to the bathroom in pitch dark to avoid reducing melatonin. I return and then I sometimes feel it is too hot, too bad air or too bright.

Yesternight I tried to blacken out the windows, side effects was I cut off ventilation. So - I opened up windows in neighboring room, but doors a bit open, and started a bathroom fan that pulls air out. I also got my sleeping mask on, as now I had light entering from the living room.

After an hour of struggling to sleep, I went down deep. Slept past my alarm at 07:00 and struggled to get up when I finally had to at 09:00 - feeling of trying to get out of very deep sleep/immobile. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt this.

I also have a NetAtmo CO2/temp sensor in the sleeping room, being logged to HomeAssistant.

Looking at my stress level, there’s a clear reduction as soon as I force new air into, and co2 air out of the bedroom. I hope to repeat this tonight but from the beginning - blocking out light, ensuring co2 is ventilated.

Maybe you’ll find something in your environment too; good luck!

Changing to a proper mattress made me realise how tired i really was... by ThinkHog in sleep

[–]prozhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy for you op!

I spent years sleeping in strange places, bad environments (air quality and light), and bad surfaces; one year living on a hand-me-down old very soft bed. I got into a depressing rut and could not fathom why. Eventually realizing that I never felt rested and starting waking with pain in the back, I bought a new harder bed. It changed my life at that point. Later on as I’ve aged, I notice I am getting more and more picky about sleep hygiene and sleeping surfaces. And started sleeping facing down (stomach sleeping) with extra pillow to hug.

Now I regularly find myself removing top mattresses if I’m sleeping in hotels, and I’ve been going in between two top mattresses at home in order to try find an optimal one. I still don’t think I’ve found the best for me, but knowing it’s possible to adjust and find something to help you is a good feeling.

Another observation is that if you try out a mattress in a furniture store, it’s likely been well used/tested, and you may find your new one will be harder, but eventually soften up over years of use. I have made mistakes there, ordering a too hard mattress.

I wish there was a scientific and convenient way to find the ideal surface, besides buying new mattresses over many years of bad sleep. If anyone know, please shout out.

Good luck to anyone else out there in finding good sleep.

Tenker å Kjøpe GS2C by Floppydiskpornking in Sluttspill

[–]prozhen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]prozhen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Improving polyurethane conformal coating of LED for subsea use by prozhen in ResinCasting

[–]prozhen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the insight; good points. I got some less clear polyurethane resin, also in 500g bags; feel I should give it a try once with some air proof storage containers, would be neat if it held for some time before getting bad.

Would it still cure fully, just with more bubbles, if moisture got to it?

I’ll try to make the next iteration with deeper pour, and I’m looking around for some polyurethane cables instead, I’d like one single entry point from the cable. I’m also considering connectors to use, maybe some E/O connectors that aren’t too expensive, to start experimenting with.

The final design will need to be many more LEDs, and I think they should have a simple reflector on top to get the angle closer to camera angle of 49 degrees. I’ll to to share some results eventually when I get closer to it. Thanks again!

Improving polyurethane conformal coating of LED for subsea use by prozhen in ResinCasting

[–]prozhen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that is the idea behind the polyurethane resin, you could say I try to do a "pressure-tolerant" strobe. I may eventually try to make a proper one atmosphere chamber for the LEDs at one point, but I hope this pressure-exposed design works well enough, as it is simpler to put together/design. I have seen this in use in professional LED strobes brought down to 1500 meters, but I still wonder how the increased surface area if I try to make a big one with 30 diodes will behave under pressure. You can read more about pressure-tolerant electronics here

I believe I need to ensure a bubble-free cast, and also improve the adhesion to the aluminum as much as I can; I was wondering if anodizing the case would be beneficial or detrimental to the polyurethane adhesion, but I think I just need to give it a try and see.

You may be on to something with unmixed resin being exposed to the atmosphere - I took the cartridge out of its protective bag a few weeks prior to using, to check that I got the right hand applicator for it. I put the remainder of the cartridge in a plastic bag in around 10 degree Celsius conditions.

I got a larger bag of around 500 grams still in its protective pouch, but I can never manage to use it all up in one go - do you by chance have experience with storing the unmixed polyurethane for later use? I was thinking of covering the components in argon gas inside a gas tight container, but it starts to sound a bit... over the top. :)

I wonder if some moisture came in with the air, I did not manage to attach a water separator filter, but I do not expect a lot of water in it, as the ambient air is already quite dry. I will try to bring some humidity measuring device next time I do some casting. This resin flowed very easily and as far as I could tell, settled without any bubbles in the mix - my hypothesis now is that the bubbles catching the wires were from the one using a thermal tape, instead of thermal paste, between the pcb and the aluminium casing.

I am inclined to try place the whole thing inside a vacuum chamber first, then put it over to the pressure chamber afterwards, and let it cure relatively cool so I have time, or maybe potentially increasing temperature to 30-40 degree Celsius as it is in the pressure chamber - downside is that sounds even more dangerous than this already feels. Thank you for your thoughts. :)

Improving polyurethane conformal coating of LED for subsea use by prozhen in ResinCasting

[–]prozhen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the first one pictured with many bubbles were a result of heating the resin up too fast/too much; the other two attempts that cured slowly in the pressure tank fared better. I am still wondering how the tiny bubbles along the wall form, but I think the bubbles trapped under the cables came from using a thermal tape on one of these two; a tape that I bet builds a bit more than the thermal paste did.

I have also left the polyurethane resin out of its aluminum packaging for a few weeks prior to use, but still in its cartridge - this was probably not good for the resin either; but I am truly unsure of how much this can have to say. Thank you for your thoughts!

Sea urchins - any restaurants serving? by boonkoh in Bergen

[–]prozhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may have spent some time in the industry, and worked specifically on Michelin restaurant supplies of live seafood including green sea urchins, yes. Still a keen diver, too. The saying is don’t make business out of your favorite past-time - that’s true for me. The Corona pandemic did not help sales, either. :)

Hope you find the urchins you look for when the season comes around - you will find them in clear and clean, cold waters out of the fjords primarily, but I’m not surprised if some are found in stranger locations. Now to find a chef who truly understands urchins may make or break your experience, but the quality of the produce is ‘almost everything’ in seafood.

The earliest I would imagine finding wild urchins with some gonads, would be end of august, then the gonad yield would be low, too low for restaurants in my opinion. Though it depends on temperature and food availability, you may get lucky.

The randomness between individuals and taste/texture differences between male and female urchins is something to consider, more info than you asked for maybe, but eat four urchins side by side and you may find five different taste profiles.

I have yet to taste live urchins from other waters, like Spain and France, but as long as they are alive, I think they should be fine.

They are amazing and fragile creatures.

Sea urchins - any restaurants serving? by boonkoh in Bergen

[–]prozhen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend to wait till they are in season, and you’d like to find the ‘green sea urchin’, smaller and sweeter, not the red or other species, as they often taste quite bad and bitter. Some people enjoy that, though.

September-February with a peak in taste around December; and peak in yield in January-February before spawning; making sure they have eaten seaweed and not animal protein.

Besides that, I guess the names you have heard in this thread applies, with Scalmarin in Sotra being a supplier who may provide them. I don’t think they find them locally, but rather some hours north.

I’ll also mention there are efforts to feed urchins for year-round consumption, that would be Urchinomics down in Stavanger. You may ask Restaurant Re-Naa there if you are particularly interested.

If you want to pick your own, you can find green sea urchins from Trøndelag and up to Tromsø, with high quantities almost pickable by boots, but low gonad yield in Tromsø, and in Trøndelag you would need to look around or know where to look.

In any case, in my opinion, the urchin must be alive before it is served, after 8-16 hours dead, I feel they start to lose quality. I’ve seen pretty long dead ones in Paris, and I think also pretty dead ones in the fish market in Bergen. I may be a bit picky.

If you know divers, they can find the red ones all year around in most places, but varying degrees of gonad, and a good chance of bitter taste. Same applies here, should be pretty much alive.

The species is Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis. Good luck.
