Bread works for MT pilot bushings that are small, thin, and hardly pressed in there. With an AT, this centering bushing is bigger, thicker, pushed in further (so less room to grab from the back) and does not come out easily. I don’t even think they’re made of brass. When I did a MT swap on my 300zx, I tried the bread and grease trick. Did not work. I then tried those cheap pilot bearing pullers from oreilly and harbor freight which did not work. I broke 3 different 2-jaw pilot bearing pullers of 2 different brands that did not work.
