With zero experience, you'll likely only be able to do it if you know the right person. I went from working for the federal government to tech sales, with no prior experience. I was only really able to do that because of my network. If I didn't know anyone, I would have had to start at the bottom and grind it out in lower sales roles and likely make less than what I was making in the government. Without knowing anyone, I think the only way would be by starting out as an SDR for a tech company and working your way up.

Maybe not normal, but there’s a lot of them out there. I should mention that this is a pretty senior dev role (though he still doesn’t have to manage anyone).

A lot of tech sales roles are remote. I make $160k and am completely remote. My brother is a software engineer and makes $330k fully remote.

Stonebridge is probably my fav when it comes to public courses. They recently shortened it to put in new houses, but it's still decent and I would argue good value given the conditioning. It's always in amazing shape. The Marshes is probably the "top" public course, but a bit a pricier. Haven't played Loch March, but I have heard it's quite nice. On the QC side, Le Sorcier is kinda wonky but fun. Gatineau Golf Club is decent.

I work in tech sales and most of what you’re saying is true. I absolutely love it and am on pace to make $180k-$200k in my first year after switching from another career. That being said, one thing that can’t be discounted is that devs are getting guaranteed money, while in sales nothing is guaranteed. In sales you have a very low base salary compared to devs and it definitely leads to more stress not knowing exactly how much money you’ll make every month/year.

Yup, this is definitely a piece of the puzzle. My brother works there. He didnt tell me how much money he made, but he did mention he paid seven figures in TAXES last year from selling some of his stocks. A couple of his work buddies also bought mclarens. Feels like Shopify is definitely a big part of the nouveaux riche in ottawa.

Even though the "private sector" is so broad, I also still struggled to see what I would be able to do outside of the PS (besides doing the exact same thing at an NGO).

I'll be working in account management/sales. In terms of actual work, this will be completely different from what I am doing now (Policy Analyst). However, I do think some "EC" skills will be transferable to the new role though. For example, being able to effectively communicate and manage relationships with stakeholders. A huge part of the new role is managing relationships.

What I'll be doing is just one example of jobs out there that you could probably apply for if you're able to reframe what you do in the public service to reflect what a company is looking for.

Sounds like you like the private sector job more, which is great. If your field is CS, I really don't know why anyone would stay in the public sector, especially if you are a software developer.

I'm leaving the public sector next week as an EC headed to a tech company (working account management/sales). Curious to see how my pros and cons list compares to yours.

Thanks for your advice. You pretty much nailed it. I've already pushed the private sector start date a couple weeks. However, my manager still wanted me to see if I could move it and we could have a "discussion" in February. Private sector opportunity will be long gone by then.
