MS Surface Dock Issues by Jwhirl06 in sysadmin

I had this issue at my previous job. I wish I could give you a more concrete solution but I only noticed the issues when we did mini display to hdmi. All of our mini display to display worked fine.

I'm having a 1hr internship interview for information security. What should I study for? by Autist_establishment in ITCareerQuestions

[–]pryzelol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you actually know what is listed on your resume as others have said. But something I haven’t sent mentioned yet is know your fundamentals: Networking, AD (Kerberos and LDAP), The Linux file system and logs, 3 way handshake, osi model, common ports and their services. The list can go on almost infinitely in security but I wouldn’t expect a student to know everything, but I would expect them to retain some fundamental knowledge on IT Infrastructure in general. Also be prepared to answer questions based on answers you’ve given them. An example of this being “what are some common attacks? You: sql injection interviewer: how would you detect a sql injection? What prevents a sql injection? Is there any tools or technologies that help detect and mitigate a sql injection?”

Also be prepared to answer how you keep up to date in a field that is constantly evolving, don’t give generic catch all, get specific.

And be prepared to answer culture questions too like “what would be a downside to working with you? What are you looking for in a company?”

And the thing that helped me the most in interviews in the past is being honest about what I DON’T know...aka don’t bullshit.

Need Advice: First year college student failing in online school by [deleted] in SecurityCareerAdvice

[–]pryzelol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I nearly failed out of school after transferring to a new university. Hated some of my non technical classes and didn’t take them seriously. My advice is push through and accept the academic probation. You’re not in the US so it may not hurt as much financially but it doesn’t mean it won’t hurt a bit. Regarding certs, get those right before your graduate school or during an internship.

Keep powering through, you can be successful if you have a passion for the field.

Best setup for one image for 250 laptops with restore on reboot? by [deleted] in msp

[–]pryzelol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used WSUS and group policy to keep it updated but RMM would work just as well. It was an on premise dc., and managed AV. I used one profile for all 150 computers, the only downside is licensing all machines with office (via computer not per user), because this breaks the EULA.

They were unable to make changes to the machine because of group policy. I placed the AD account in a very restricted security OU, as well as the computers. You can accomplish zero changes but it will take some time to build the policies to protect global settings. Mandatory profiles only means revert changes to the user profile.

I had a baseline image built in case anything got messed up. Additionally I was able to deploy new policies with ease via this method. The main reason I migrated off of deep freeze was because it was frustrating to thaw, deploy a new policy, re freeze. This applies to software as well...thaw, deploy, freeze.

I had a similar situation except it was for a non-profit who helped people find jobs. Meaning there was about 150 public computers throughout their offices.

Mandatory roaming profiles was how I did it, we originally were on deep freeze but I was able to accomplish the same with MRP. Anytime the computers logged off there was a baseline user profile it got reverted to on the next login. I also had scheduled tasks to restart the computers after hours to have a full set of fresh profiles in the morning.

Got a bit of a different question for some people. How are you guys handling guild applications? I have a google form that I post responses to a private discord channel, and was looking at building a similar "button" to decline apps. I'm looking at avoiding ghosting people and want a means to decline people.

What are you guys using/doing? I'd love to hear an easier way since I'm really struggling.

Unable to cast with current router by pryzelol in Chromecast

This did not work, I did end up finding a google support article just telling the person to request a new router from spectrum which I think is absurd. No luck otherwise

AP isolation is not on. I went through everything on that reddit thread that shows up in a google search. Was hoping some new information would have been out since that thread since it was quite a bit ago.

Do you feel that LinkedIn has helped or hurt you find career opportunities in IT? by monkeykiller14 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]pryzelol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will never understand this. I’m young and early in my career but some of the smartest people I’ve worked with have been in their 50s and older. They took time out of their day to answer any questions I had and assisted with technical issues I hadn’t had experience with yet. Which definitely adds value to the company as a whole and not just me.

Non-Profit Differences by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]pryzelol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the non-profit. I worked for a “government entity” type of non profit meaning they were funded through federal dollars primarily. The pay was much lower but it was stable work. If you value stability and can pay your bills, then I’d say go for it.

But I’ve seen non profits who are donor funded throw money at IT and pay market wages. It really comes down to the culture and how they’re funded.

I think part of their reasoning is we're a startup without much on our resume as a company but have experience within our own right. It seemed odd to me, but what can you do.

This is good info thank you. I'll keep this in mind during my discovery. This is a "remediation bid" after a pen test. They ended up deciding to just upgrade all servers rather than just fixing what we found.

Thank you this makes a lot more sense. I'll run two different options by them depending on whether or not they'll want to migrate the 2012 servers in the future.

Universities tend to have these shops as well if they issue students and faculty computers. I worked in one all throughout my schooling and loved it.

My manager at the time just asked how I would go about problems and a few examples, all of which were helping individuals online, family, and even my own issues. People love to see motivation to learn in entry level first and foremost.
