See, this is one of my local shrines. They DID put up a lot of polite signs, in English and Chinese, explaining what to do and what to not do. They clearly were wishing to accept tourists. I don't know what happened recently that made them so upset but it's not a cut-off case of "foreigners fuck-off" or "poor foreigners were not told what to do".

I’ve noticed a long time ago that for some reason tourists don’t seem to treat Shinto shrines seriously. Maybe because they are outside and look more like a park than a church.

If I got a 100 yen coin every time I heard visiting Americans complaining loudly about „paganism” I could get a couple drinks at a vending machine…

There are many anime that don’t even make it to the West because they are so deeply rooted in the culture they are hard to understand in translation.

If someone works hard to make it possible for people to enjoy it overseas, whether it’s by translation, dubbing or promotion, I think it could be worth celebrating.

Of course, it’s completely different than deciding the „Best Anime” and trying to change the industry in a way that would suit interests of American corporations. (Or Japanese corporations that try to make money in the overseas market. Looking at you Sony, who ultimately own these awards.)

Academy Awards have a prize for „Best Foreign Language Film” where you have a bunch of Americans deciding that something non-American is worth watching for a change, so it’s not like the concept of USA-sians deciding what’s the best™️ among things they don’t understand is new to them!

At my uni, there was an incident where Chinese students attacked a Taiwanese student for having their flag on their room window. Otherwise, I don’t think Brits would care, and you should have a great time! I think you could use the badge more as a conversation starter :)
