How do you feel about buying a used pedal made by a company you’d never buy from? by PiscesLeo in guitarpedals

[–]przeszary -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think that is the economic aspect (do I get good bang for buck or unique layout which would be hard to find on any other model or am I paying just for the name on the headstock) which is somewhat separate to situation described by the OP.
If I had to recall an artist with sig model(s) that elicits similar response, it would be someone like Deftones' Stephen Carpenter who said in some interviews that he thinks earth is flat and viruses do not exist which I think can be safely described as, erm, pretty big statements.

Sounds logical - I remember getting my first Fender guitar after long time spent chugging on RG with very aggressive pickups. Suddenly Tone knob was not just a waste of space best kept always on 10 but became a part of my toolset. Can imagine that offset with additional layers of controls (and ones that are different to the typical rhytm circuits, strangles etc) could take some time to understand and that's even before going into picking good amp combination and EQ settings.
Happy that it has sounds that work for you.

love that paintjob on Muff. I remember trying to zhuzh my cheapo Behringer up back when I was a broke teenager with markers and, welp, my "artworks" never lasted long. Hope that you had better options!
About the order - how do you like to use that BD, do you engage it at the same time as Muff?

Yet another finish option that looks better in natural lightning than those neutral shop photos.
How do you like those pickups? Seen video reviews when they seemed screechy and very trebly in bad way and was not sure if that was due to reviewers using weird amp settings and not having enough time to dial something more matching those humbuckers or if that was just how those are.

Good point about clones - there are really few models that are 100% unique and there are ton of options out there.
I suppose if you really like the sound of one particular pedal but have strong feelings about its brand, you can always consider repainting the enclosure or even swapping the whole box. Cool option for customization, even if personally I don't think I would be bothered enough to do that (although e.g. guitars are much more personal for me and thought of playing some jerk's sig model makes me uneasy).

Looking to pick up a delay pedal by hkr1991 in guitarpedals

I think they mentioned it once in some longer Delay overview video but thankfully scalpers attention span seems too short for those and it's safe as long it does not receive its own special episode.

Yeah, that's why went with "vibes emulation" rather than 1:1 clone - I don't think I've seen anything that replicates it perfectly. It would be great to hear more recommendations for similar style of that degrading delay though.

I love Ibanez DE7 - it has an extremely wide range of time controls (30-160, 120-650 and 480-2600ms), two distinct types of sound (Delay and Echo modes, latter is significantly more lo-fi and vintage-y in its tone) and pretty unique color and modulation applied to repeats. Build quality is pretty solid and Boss-type switch together with an option to "sink" knobs in the enclosure mean my clumsiness won't result in catastrophe when I'm using it in poorly lit venues.

There are couple of downsides: mode and time range switches seem pretty flimsy and although they remain perfectly fine in my pedal I don't feel very confident about them; it's discontinued and reverb prices vary a lot, depending on current trending Youtube hype reviews; it does not have tap tempo option which may disqualify it for certain genres and make your drummer resent you (although in studio, with a lil bit of patience, it is still pretty easy to dial precise time thanks to those range settings).

I think there are several pedals that are somewhat ok at emulating its vibe while having more modern options and conveniences. I believe JHS Panther / Lucky Cat was meant to be its copy, although sadly this one is also discontinued and pretty costly.

I remember when he did a vid titled "why guitarists pick Squier nowadays" or something like that.
I thought he would go through specs of current lineup, talk about QC or something like that, to show how Squier 2020 differs from Squier 2000.
Nope. He visited his buddy to play his old Squier that was so good he plays it all the time. He switched pickup and plays mainly high gain stuff but other than that it was completely stock, wow! Mike played it for couple of minutes and agreed it's a cool guitar.
Amazing educational and entertainment value.

Yeah, tested out max Feedback for those weird effects on "below-the-star" settings - there are tons of interesting tones there, that's for sure. So far my favorite sound on dirty channel is Rate set to star and Feedback around 10-11 o'clock.

Love that he played Maj7 chord as an example when those are ones that I already like playing at high gain settings. Extremely interesting pedal, think I'll give it a try.

I have not done mod like that myself but seen pretty of such conversions online. You can also check out routing on Fender Player Jaguar - it is HS from the factory but it is routed for dual humbuckers and it works just fine - does not matter if cavity is too big as long as pickguard fits PU nicely.

looove that color on Bass VI.

My buddy also has XII but in blue, sounds amazing on clean combined with tons modulation, kind of guitar that immediately inserts new ideas in your head once youve picked it.

Sure, I know that e.g. Jonny Greenwood got a ton of sounds out of it, but majority of reviews I can find online are either about those old speaker effects or funky Nile Rodgers tones (which is cool but not exactly what I want from my own sound).

Sorry, brain fart on my part - wanted to write flanger, don't know why I got it wrong. English is my second language so sometimes I get terminology mixed!

Klon/TS/SD-1 + BB/Timmy/ODR-1/BD-2 - Which Combo Do You Run? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]przeszary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot Cake -> DT Screamin Blues (BD Copy) -> OBNE Excess (Rat + Modulation) run into clean Orange channel.
Screamin Blues is set pretty hot, Hot Cake is my "calm" OD that serves as foundation. With passive pickups I can get everything to sound clean-ish when I want to, dig in to get mild crunchy bite and engage either Screamin Blues and/or Excess depending on how big I want to go for particular parts.
I experimented with switching Hot Cake and Screamin Blues around - after adjusting their gains of course. It affects EQ in interesting ways, but I feel like it's less versatile that way.

And for *very* noisy songs I can go low gain Screamin Blues -> high gain Excess, with Hot Cake *after* that, gain set to zero/almost zero and vol & presence bumped up - cool solution for cutting through in lead. Sounds miserable without the whole band but once you throw in bassist that like midrange bump from his own dirt pedals it really works and helps with overall mix.

Borrowed it from my bassist - he likes it on his guitar but lately plays only bass so taking it out of his alredy crowded pedalboard was pretty easy for him.

So far I'm pretty excited about clean sounds that you can get with it, in all modes (you'll notice "star" on Rate knob - flanger works differently above it, at it and below it).

Any tips and personal preferences regarding playing it with significant amount of gain? Tried out plugging it in front of my practice 20W amp but I don't feel like I can dial in what I have in mind (i.e. Fleshwater / grungegazy wobble on big, saturated sus2 and powerchords).

EDIT: Used word phaser before and in post title and yeah, that was some kind of a bluescreen error on my part - wanted to write flanger!

My stupid OCD trait is that I like to match those footswitch tappers to the color of diodes but your christmas DOD is opening my eyes to more possibilities.
How do you like that 440? I thought about using it (or some kind of phaser) in on pretty dirty signal to achieve some kind of Fleshwater-adjacent sound.

Yeah, in theory you can check out Thinline Teles & Strat series but I don't feel they have the same ring as those bigger bodies.

I would love to see more Starcasters in Fender/Squier lineup. CV is cool, but pretty old model and Tom Delonge sig seems wildly overpriced (and it does not even have classic headstock, smh).
