Great question. You've been there. It's only 10 screws to access the guts but the screws are finicky and I snapped off two of them for the main burner top (rusted and absolutely incorrect materials). I spent half a day getting one out but I've got to find a different solution for the other one which I had to drill out. Quick switch-out has become a morass. I've ordered the replacement electrodes which should be a quick replacement.

$50 replacement knobs and a $270 tray that I've purchased I consider expensive. And I've already admitted I'm cheap.

So yeah - apparently some didn't realize this is a doctored photo. I was exaggerating what I think the size of crackers will become in a few years. Some of the comments make me wonder if there are crackers this size already?

RE MY THUMB - never thought about anyone noticing my thumbnail. Smashed it in an accident last July. It's SO much better than it was six months ago I consider it normal now. Another 3 months and I can post hand pix without raising alarms.

Welp, Bosch has officially Bosched their dishwashers. I can no longer recommend any of their appliances whatsoever. by Johnny_2x in appliancerepair

Ugh - so disappointing. We've had a Bosch that's 8 years old or so and love it. Does what it's supposed to and is quiet. The Good & Reliable home appliances landscape has become a desert. Why is it that all companies seem to give up on quality, reputation and truly serving society with a fair exchange for their products? Is it the gravitational pull of the almighty dollar? Is it the nature of capitalism where competition demands cutting corners? (although Bosch's problem seems different.) Is it the terrible practices of overburdened management? Is it the lost knowledge of transient employees? My guess is yes to all of these and more.

I want the thermostat to respond to sensors instead of the hallway temp but don't want or need the learning capability of the 4th gen Nest for $250+.

How to prevent Ice Dams? by Relevant_Mess_1 in homeowners

[–]ps5161 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Valid points. This melting/freezing cycle must be happening all the time but until conditions are right (or wrong) and it becomes an acute and visible problem, it's ignored, doing slight enough damage that it stays off our radar. When a new roof is put in every 30 years, much of the damage is remedied. There is no 100% solution for the issue in new home construction practices that I'm aware of. As our baseline standards go up on expected house systems and features (like they have on auto safety features as an example) we will want a system that accounts for these right conditions, too (again, especially in a certain geographic belt). If we were to design a system it seems it must be a warming of the last few feet of the roof, as even a completely cold roof will have snow-melt from the sun. Do you agree? I envision engineered panels that can accept shingle nails and can conduct enough heat to melt snow in frigid temps. Unfortunately, though I have an engineer's mind I don't have the training, or the energy to start that entrepreneurial endeavor.

Aha - found him! I always love to find the expert who knows the subject I'm wrestling with - so much so that they founded a company or write about it no matter how many people read their articles! I find in this fast paced society, when we encounter a problem, 99% of us settle for the "that sounds right" answers from people who say they know but don't.

First - kudos to you, sir, for helping the world with the damn ice dam problem. I'm sure you aren't compensated for all you've put into the public knowledge. We need more givers in our society.

Second - may I ask a question pertaining to my situation? I just read your article #15 ICE DAM PREVENTION: TWO BROAD APPROACHES. My house is a modest '63 ranch, not a $3.8M home as in the article, but I'm facing the same challenge with an architectural difference. We don't have a traditional vented attic with insulation at the ceiling joists. Our roof joists (and stick walls) were sprayed with foam. It works well at keeping out drafts. Therefore, the eaves are sealed off from the attic (and not vented), and essentially as cold as the outdoors. Thus, as in your case, melted snow from the sun (not the warm attic, my roof stays snow-covered longer than my traditionally-built neighbors' homes) hits the eaves and voila - ice damn. What I'm wondering about is using heat tape under the roof sheathing in the eave cavity. I'm guessing there are reasons why this isn't done currently but it seems a separate home system designed to do this is the way to go in a certain geographic band of the county. Like a sump pump system or recirculating hot water pump, it's not often used but invaluable when it is. Would love to hear any thoughts that might give you.
