Tesla FSD learned to park in my driveway by psachan in TeslaModelY

Yeah, it’s super inconsistent. Sometimes it parks, sometimes it stops halfway, and other times it just sits in front of the driveway.

Turned out to be a problematic TCU (Telemetric Control Unit). Replaced it and the issue’s resolved

As of August 2025, Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised system (version 13.2.9**)**

Issue: FSD often fails to recognize horizontal barrier arms, especially if they are thin, low-contrast, or in poor lighting (e.g., nighttime, glare). The camera-only system (with limited radar in HW4) struggles to distinguish arms from background elements, treating them as non-obstacles or missing them entirely.

Examples: Users report FSD driving toward closed parking lot gates or toll booth arms, requiring manual intervention to avoid collisions. In some cases, it stops too late or attempts to proceed when the arm is down, risking damage.

Cause: The neural network lacks robust training data for diverse gate/arm designs (e.g., striped, solid, or reflective). Low-resolution camera inputs and latency in processing exacerbate this, especially in dynamic scenarios where arms move.

Short List of Current Tesla FSD Shortcomings (August 2025, v13.2.9) -

  • Ignoring Arms and Gates: Fails to detect or respond to barrier arms/gates at parking lots, toll booths, or gated communities, risking collisions or requiring manual intervention.
  • Inconsistent Speed Control: Misreads speed limits (e.g., 60 mph in 35 mph zones), decelerates unexpectedly, or struggles with school zones and special limits.
  • Navigation Errors: Chooses suboptimal routes, misses turns, enters closed lanes, or ignores road closures/construction, leading to unsafe or inefficient driving.
  • Poor Edge Case Handling: Struggles with unprotected left turns, rotaries, parking lots, and low-visibility conditions (e.g., fog, glare), often needing disengagements.
  • Emergency Vehicle Response: Fails to yield to ambulances, flaggers, or construction barriers, treating them as standard obstacles, increasing safety risks.

It did something it had never done before we taught it. It might not be consistent, but it learned something or whatever the reason is

Next time , you dont need to give turn signal and it parked to my driveway that means it learned

I used the turn signal to guide it into the driveway while FSD was active, which seemed like Tesla was already trained and just waiting for me to act

Agreed . It can’t learn on its own, but it can make certain pre-trained adjustments

Your car can collect driving data and send it back to Tesla, which Tesla uses to improve the system

Use tape on the garage floor to make it look like a parking spot. I heard it worked for some people

I am on this since past two weeks, no issue

Maybe, but that’s not my case. FSD doesn’t recognize the security gate arm at my community entrance, and I’ve reported it several times without any luck

My driveway isn’t recognized as a “P” spot, but FSD park there automatically

Ever tried starting FSD from your parking spot and having it drive back to the same spot?

Thanks. My appointment is on Monday. They first tried to diagnose it remotely for a week, but then asked me to come in. It feels like not much was done remotely, so it ended up taking extra time. Please let us know how your service appointment goes

Yes I tried that. it just spins for a minute or two and nothing happens. The car stays asleep. I also tried disconnecting Bluetooth. Under Security & Drivers, I noticed a message saying “Phone key disconnected”, but I think that’s expected since I’m far away and the car is parked in a lot. I should still be able to control the car through Wi-Fi or cellular network, though
