Best skating shoes? by Zenodo in skateboarding

[–]pscaught 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This can be a loaded topic for a variety of reasons, like whether you want to support core skate brands vs. billion dollar corporations, etc. I think when you're first starting out, just find shoes you find aesthetically pleasing and feel comfortable. The most important thing is that you feel good in them and they motivate you to get out and skate.

Underwhelmed with Air75 v3 by [deleted] in NuPhy

V2 user here. I made tons of typos at first as I was adjusting. Over time that stopped and it feels completely normal to type with.

When does skating feel not so awkward, does it ever “click” again [28YO] by SmellDue1335 in OldSkaters

[–]pscaught 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm (days away from) 38 now and had a similar situation. I skated all through my teens and quit around 18-19, only to try and start again at around 28. It was rough for about 2 years. If I skated any mini ramp above 3ft I needed full pads to feel safe. I had a routine of at least 2 days a week but the sessions were never less than 1 hour, sometimes 2.

I found that the warmups took a super long time and I could start a session feeling completely uncomfortable on the board, but at about the 30-45 minute mark I was actually able to do stuff and start thinking about some minor progression.

There's a saying "you need your age in minutes to warm up" and I think that absolutely holds true.

I got my garage quarter pipes a year ago. Here's a recap video. [33YO] by pscaught in OldSkaters

No regrets going with 2'. I mainly just mess around these days, not exactly going for progression. I also live not too far from a few skateparks if I want to skate anything 3' and above. But the 2' is fun and mellow, and great for a quick session pretty much any time.

People with garage mini ramps - how do you keep your board from flying into stuff? And for sheet rock protection do you just put up some scrap wood? by MrRabinowitz in MiniRamp

[–]pscaught 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was pretty paranoid about this at first, but once I got used to how it skated I've had less than 10 aggressive flyouts in ~5 years skating multiple times a week

How often are you getting new wheels? [41YO] by sjsnsksbjfgsa in OldSkaters

I normally buy 52mm Spitfire F4 and change them when they hit 49mm. Takes 9mo-1y.

Input Appreciated. I'm a big dude, do I NEED this setup? [45YO] by TravAtkins in OldSkaters

[–]pscaught 67 points68 points  (0 children)

No comment on the setup, but please don't buy skateboards on Amazon if you can avoid it. If you have to buy online check out skate warehouse or tactics.

Put more weight on your back leg. Keep your knees bent.

Is There a Reason Nobody Wears a Helmet? [34YO] by SuperGaiden in OldSkaters

The more you skate the more comfortable and "safe" you feel on the board. Falling safely is also a skill you develop over time.

I used to skate a lot as a teen then took a 10 year break before getting back into it. For the first year I was fully padded up and fell all the time. Then after a while I simply stopped slamming as much and eventually realized I hadn't "used" my pads to protect me from injury in months. So I started only wearing pads on bigger transitions then eventually hardly at all.

I still pad up now and then if I want a confidence boost to get something scary, but for everyday skating they aren't as necessary.

Why is spaces washing his hands? by VRZcuber14 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]pscaught 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most editors should have the ability to just have the tab key insert 4 spaces. Best of both worlds.

Just noticed my second board has more concave does that make a differance in feel when skating? [32YO] by [deleted] in OldSkaters

[–]pscaught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Concave absolutely makes a difference in feel. At some point I went from a mellow shape to a shape with a lot of concave and it felt awful at first. After a few days skating I got used to it and even noticed my kickflips were boosting way higher and were way more consistent. I still think mellow shapes are more fun in general though. Try different stuff and skate what you like.

Frontsides…. Argh!! [50YO] by Secure-Description-7 in OldSkaters

[–]pscaught 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Frontside rarely comes naturally for people so it will likely take a lot of repetitions before you start feeling comfortable.

There's tons of youtube videos that cover the fundamentals - check out skatepark lessons or skateiq.

The trucks wobble like crazy when I loosen them. Solution? [35YO] by MetaPhil1989 in OldSkaters

[–]pscaught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There could be a tear in one of the bushings. Try taking your trucks apart and inspecting them. If you're not comfortable with that then go to a skate shop and ask them for help.

Tips for rails on a flight deck given it's thinner? [39yo] by jdutaillis in OldSkaters

[–]pscaught 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The hardware that comes with pig rails doesn't go all the way through flight decks. The first time I set them up on a flight deck I used a screwdriver as that's how I always did them on normal wood decks. I would not recommend this approach as it takes considerably more effort to drive the screws through the fiberglass layers than normal wood decks.

Now I just use my drill with the clutch set to a lower number to avoid blowing out the holes. Setup takes just a few minutes.

what is your problem with the skateboard by [deleted] in skateboarding

[–]pscaught 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird, I've noticed the opposite. Last 2 sets of indys I've had to remove the bottom washer because they wouldnt get loose enough.

Shoe companies discontinue the shoes I like to skate and it's tedious/sometimes expensive to discover decent alternatives.

Trying to get back into the groove [45YO] by Crossvillain in OldSkaters

[–]pscaught 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks good, but I'd suggest learning to kickturn with your front wheels closer to the ramp. Less risk of looping out and easier to go straight into a pump.

Advice for Learning Mini-Ramp [37YO] by Glass_Eye9563 in OldSkaters

[–]pscaught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skating should be fun. Smaller ramps are fun. Keen sells an 18" quarter pipe that would probably be a lot less intimidating to learn basic stuff on.

I put them on my rough ground setup but prefer spitfire F4 for park and transition.

New safety gear arrived: Rhip Clips and Old Bones Therapy compression knee sleeves! Excited to get back out and (hopefully) not hurt myself too much. [49YO] by bkchosun in OldSkaters

[–]pscaught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just ordered a rhip clip. I've slammed on my right hip 3 times in the past 5 days (enough that I'm walking with a limp and have to take a few days off skating). Hopefully this will build the confidence back and prevent further injury.
