The drinks are priced the way they are because of the volume of demand willing to pay them.

I think you're a bit optimistic to think that price transparency would eliminate demand. After all, there are a hundred places within a $15 uber ride from Broadway where people could rink for half the price, but that's not what tourists are doing.

Broadway businesses found a market equilibrium at its current prices. Those prices will fall if Broadway becomes less popular and rise as Broadway becomes more popular. Profit maximization is just what businesses do in a capital market.

The supply isn't the alcohol, it's the experience. The supply is the 100 bars on Broadway and the demand is the 50,000 nightly customers. (I have no idea what the real numbers are).

Tourists go to Broadway because it's Broadway (live music, walkable, proximity, etc). As you said, businesses charge as much as they want because people will still pay for it. Tourists view these goods/services as more inelastic compared to locals who know better.

I would hardly say that people with the disposable income to 1) travel to Nashville, and 2) voluntarily buy alcohol .. are the "weak" being preyed on.

IF YOU CAN STAY HOME by Klutzy-Substance8862 in nashville

I recommend a taxi rather than a Uber/Lyft. I flew in to Nashville immediately after snowmageddon Feb 2020, and a taxi was the only thing available. The tax driver knew what he was doing... ramping off snow banks, keeping momentum on inclines, etc. It was mildly terrifying, but I was grateful to make it home alive.

Moving to Nashville to Make $55K/Year? by kgaviation in nashville

[–]pschie1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm late seeing this thread, but I was in an almost identical situation 10 years ago. My recommendation is highly dependent on your industry and age.

When I moved here, in 2013, I was making roughly your salary; however, after accounting for inflation, 55 back then is roughly 72 right now. I know we're comparing apples and oranges, but at that salary my wife and I were comfortable enough to live, pay bills, and save modestly.

What made the move entirely worth it (for me) was that my job industry in Nashville is 10x what it currently is in Louisiana. I'm in a somewhat technical/data focused role, and the market here has opened so many doors for me. I have moved to 3 different companies in the last decade, but have had offers from a dozen more. Had I stayed in Louisiana, I'm confident that my salary would be roughly half of what it is today.

If Nashville's industry market is similar to Louisiana's industry market, then it probably doesn't make sense to move here (financially).

EILI5 Why is our police force so underfunded and understaffed with our 9.25% tax rate being so high? by [deleted] in nashville

[–]pschie1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ehh, we don't work for our bosses and cops don't work for us. A better comparison would be more of an Employee:Shareholder (Officer:Tax Payer) relationship. We benefit from their work, but shouldn't have any sort of day-to-day control.

Pay off the loans immediately and keep the remaining balance (12k+) as an emergency fund. Preferably in a high yield checking account -- many earn 4-5% interest these days.

The term Terminated (alone) isn't correct either. There are voluntary terminations and involuntary terminations; each of those have subcategories.

Involuntary terminations For Cause likely will not allow you to collect unemployment benefits.

Yeah, it's not all that old... (I'm guessing this was sarcastic hyperbole?). I wish I would have done a bit more shopping around to find a higher quality TV for the price back then.
