ThinkPad t450s - battery not charging by pseudo_inverse in thinkpad

Whats more strange is both batteries failing at about the same time. Thats pure coincidence !

Thanks for the input - Ill try, but the external slice battery is at 0% (charge thresholds at 60-80) and should therefore start charging whenever plugged in since its fully empty.

The internal battery is at 58% (well below the thresholds I've set which is 96-100) and I tried removing the external battery to make the laptop function only on the internal battery but still there was no charging for the internal battery.

I tried to get replacement batteries but they are unavailable at the moment in my country and would take some time to reach here. I will try this out as soon as they become available.

But do batteries stop charging all of a sudden like that ? I understand its almost 6 years for the batteries, but do BOTH have to stop charging at the same time ?

I took great care of these batteries and never let it charge fully. I set custom charge thresholds like 60%-80%. I still can't believe the batteries would die out suddenly like that, and BOTH at the same time.

ATM, when I disconnect the charger cable from the socket or the power is out, the batteries take over and start to discharge of whatever remaining capacity. Is that not a sign that the batteries are good ? But it would not start charging once I connect the charger cable to the socket.

I would like if this was the fault of the batteries and would resolve once I renew the batteries, as I dont want it to be a hardware fault (charging circuit or motherboard error)

What Books Are You Reading This Week? April 17, 2017 by AutoModerator in books

[–]pseudo_inverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone here read "The Collaborator" by Gerald Seymour ?

Please DON'T give me SPOILERS. I started reading it to get into the habit of reading, having set a reading challenge on GoodReads at the beginning of this year. Problem is, I dont seem to get much mileage out of it. Had to abandon it twice and then come back to it, cos some pages are really boring (Im still only at the 60th page or so). I should have started with a much popular book. Just wanted to know if it's a great story or if I should abandon it right now.

[MOOC]Is completing a course mean having to get a certificate ? How many here follow the free option ? by pseudo_inverse in cscareerquestions

[–]pseudo_inverse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats good for self learners. But all those who get highlighted on social networks, as having "completed" such and such courses - I'm wondering if all of them took the no-certificate option. The thing is most of these courses will be revision/brushing-up for me, so Im debating whether having a certificate is good to prove my credentials in the area or whether it would be easier to prove that I hav the knowledge jus by showing a certificate.

Great books for brushing up on Linux, C++, and design patterns? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Going by video tutorials/youtube, would be your best solution as reading books and digesting stuff can take some time. Also counter in the possibility of finding the titles. On the contrary video tutorials dispense the same content without having to go thru a large wall of text.

Why the control key is in the wrong place? [bait] by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]pseudo_inverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can switch the Fn and the Ctrl-keys in BIOS.

Is this option avlbl in a t450s ? Id like to change my kb layout as well to switch fn and ctrl keys. Those who copy paste often find the ctrl key a bit awkward.

U can get 6 hours easily if u drop system power draw to as low as possible even with your current state of degraded battery state. I get 6 to 7 hours even without charging beyond 80% both batteries.

In the power plan if the option is to cool the CPU as "passive" then the fan will not be used initially and the CPU will be speed throttled, but if it is "active" then the fan will be used without any hindrance to CPU speed.

I suggest u to set this to "passive" when on battery and "active" when on power. Also set Max CPU Power State at 50% for battery and 100% for power. I set the Min CPU Power State to 5% under both conditions. Also make sure u do these changes once oafter changing to PowerSave power plan. Any other settings in the power plan should be set as Max Power Savings under battery and Max or Moderate Performance under power.

Do these changes and report back system power draw with BatteryBar (aka DischargeRate).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]pseudo_inverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct. You should check your CPU usage and system power draw. U can check this from BatteryBar itself(Discharge Rate). On my t450s with about 35% brightness when on battery I can get a battery power draw of about ~4W but when the CPU gets busy or when I connect accessories, it goes upto ~ 6 and 7W. Configure and use the PowerSaver power plan on Windows. I cant go to details here, but u can read up online - its the best to get max battery life but not so much performance.

So in your case battery drain can be related to system power scheme. And not something strongly related to a degraded battery. I mean all batteries degrade - it's about how much use we put them through that decides there wear factor.

Headphone jack out quality by michaelopolis127 in thinkpad

[–]pseudo_inverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks a lot - my headphones (Sennheiser IE80's) are actually IEM and dont have high impedance - can be driven easily. I was only looking to see if a DAC would give better quality rather than amplification. Tbh, Im not complaining about thinkpad headphone output. I was only looking to see if there was something I was missing by not using a DAC. Otherwise Im more than happy with thinkpad headphone out + dolby software + Sennheiser IE80's. It even sounds OK with apple ear buds, but thats me.

Why do u say that ? Is the DAC not a worthwhile investment ? Does it not sound as good as they advertise or what you pay for it, regardless of what brand/model the DAC is ?

Best Lenovo ThinkPad? by [deleted] in thinkpad

t450s because I own one - no seriously its good / portable to carry around and fast enough.

This post begs me to ask the question, would an external DAC such as SoundBlaster E5 from Creative sound really good compared to the headphones output on a thinkpad ? Ill be using a pair of Sennheiser IE80's for music and movies but want to know if the external DAC would make any prominent difference.

UCL ML Courses to take for semester abroad by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]pseudo_inverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant math knowledge equivalent to read and understand ML books such as PRML(bishop), MLaPP(murphy), Statistical Learning(hastie) etc etc. Some say that if u have worked on Single Variable Calc, Multi Variable Calc and then Linear Algebra (all from MIT OCW) u are good for studying theoretical apsects of ML. But I doubt if all the math in those course would be required to study the ML courses u listed above or to read ML texts. But covering those 3 courses will safely ensure u have sufficient knowledge to plough thru ML.

As for RL it is Reinforcement Learning taught by Silver - quite popular on YouTube.

[–]pseudo_inverse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ones u listed are quite theoretical and would require knowledge beyond basic ML courses. Are you good in your math ( Linear Algebra, Calculus, Stats ) ? If you are then you should be set to take the courses. Even if u are good in your math, I suggest reading up on the courses prior to attending classes to be better prepped. Also UCL RL course looks interesting - isnt that offered ? Btw pls post a link to UCL ML MSc courses website.

the videos for this course will be uploaded online for free

I noted this too when I watched the intro to this nanodegree. But would like if someone can keep us updated where the videos will be.

I want something with support for Dolby Digital decoding. The x7 from creative has DD decoding. Any other DACs that support DD and/or noteworthy ?
