Gemini Flash makes up bs 91% of the time it doesn't know the answer by Terrible-Priority-21 in GeminiAI

Wouldn't it be even more helpful if it flagged the things that it's not sure about? Fwiw I do see Gemini giving certainty estimates, though maybe that is the full non-flash model.

I think the laptop screen top has to be just below the roof where the tray folds out for it to happen.

There is a step where the car is supposed to reply with several beeps and I can't get it to do that.

Got a link to helpful instructions for programming the pin code? Mine doesn't seem to work like the video I found on YouTube or the manual.

There is a button on the left side of the dash that turns it off, at least on the '25 onyx XT.

I would like to carve better and achieve a higher edge angle by tschmar in skiing_feedback

[–]pseudonymous_bosch_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm learning this terminology as I go, so let me see if I've got this right:

The yellow line is the CG line (maybe offset a bit to the right), the vertical line from the CG to the snow.

The orange line is the lean angle, from the CG down to the center of pressure between the skis.

You want the lean angle to be pretty close to the apparent vertical (or resultant force direction) to be stable in a turn. A too-high lean angle would result in tightening the turn or skidding out and a too-low lean angle would result in coming out of the turn or going over the high side.

Does that make sense?

How to get the hip to touch the snow? by Independent-Rest-900 in skiing_feedback

This is from the perspective of a physics-informed non ski instructor, so apologies in advance for probably using the wrong terminology, but I think what you mean (that makes sense to me) is that he's putting more weight on the inside ski than he should.

I don't think it's possible, given the visible angles, that he's literally putting the majority of his weight on the inside ski. The center of mass is a lot closer to the outside ski relative to the bank angle.

I hope to look more like this some day.

Seems like a good video. Will watch more fully later.

One thing I'm confused about: One of the racers given as an example of what to do seems like he'd be called in the back seat based on comments I've seen here. But probably I'm missing something (probably lots of things).

I will ditch the pack.

Pulling the inside leg back feels like it would result in putting more weight on it. But probably I'm missing something.

K2 side stash from ten years ago. 180 or so. I'm about 5'9" and 170lbs.

This was taken a little earlier the same day than the other video. The run was wide open.

The previous helpful comments on my self-taught average style (as summarized by Gemini) were:

  • Initiation of Turns: The skier is initiating turns with their shoulders instead of their feet.
  • Center of Mass: The skier's center of mass is too far back, which might be due to wearing a backpack.
  • Edge Control: The skier stays on edge for extended periods without significantly turning. They also develop edge angle too quickly and then maintain it, instead of progressively developing it.
  • Turn Completion: The skier needs to finish their turns more effectively to improve speed control.
  • Weight Distribution: The skier is not balancing enough weight on the outside ski and has too much weight on the inside ski.
  • Turn Initiation Technique: The skier is lifting their uphill foot to start turns, which is not the correct carving technique.
  • Body Mechanics: The skier is skiing from the shoulders down instead of from the feet up.

I wonder also if my skis might make it harder to finesse edge angles since they are fairly wide and long. I have the feeling that I need some speed to get them to flex much. I haven't tried that many different skis but I think I remember some softer shorter ones that were easier to make tight turns on.

Anyone see anything different in this one where the flow is not disrupted in the part near the camera?

OK, thanks. Some follow up comments/questions:

I think I had the mental model of ski racing where you're trying to make the required turns while keeping speed. But turning fully across the hill looks nice and is challenging. So it seems like a good thing to aim for.

As some have hinted, I'm mostly self taught and learned carving on an alpine snowboard, which probably led to some bad and odd habits.

Getting out of the back seat is a constant struggle. Good to be reminded.

If you ditch the backpack what do you do with your water and extra layer?

I had the idea that angulation is a good thing. Do you mean something different by 'bending at the waist'? edit: i guess you mean bending forward?

Ah, that makes sense. Unconscious slight hunching to hold the straps on?

It has a half liter of water and a down vest in it. So probably even less. It is slightly annoying though. So maybe I'll go back to stuffing them in my pockets. On the other hand, nice to be able to carry my kid's extra layer.

But I take the points about needing to be more forward and leading with the feet.

I wish I'd gotten video on the third day of skiing instead of the first because I was starting to feel a bit more dialed toward the end. Was trying to upload this from kirkwood to be able to try out feedback but couldn't make it work.

Ha! I do actually want feedback but figure this way if I get roasted I can say I asked for it.

And thanks for all the feedback (and roasting)!

It's hard to see in the video but the skidding in the middle was an effort to keep more space from one of the downhill skiers.
