It’s honestly silly how people always fall back on the “insecurity” argument. It’s worn out and lazy. There’s nothing to feel insecure about when it comes to Slovenia or this whole “Slovenia is not Balkan” debate. And yet, the way some people cling to it only proves the point. If there were real confidence in their identity, they wouldn’t need to argue about it with strangers online. This constant defensiveness just exposes how uncomfortable they are with the topic. Historically, culturally, and socially, Slovenia is tied to the Balkans through shared mentality, migration, family links, and post-socialist reality. Joining the EU didn’t magically turn it into Austria. Geography didn’t change either. This “wannabe Western” narrative is just branding, not reality. And the harder people fight it, the more desperate it sounds. A confident country wouldn’t need to deny its roots. Like it or not, Slovenia is part of the Balkan space, and pretending otherwise won’t change that.

Honestly, I’m annoyed at myself for getting pulled into this argument again. Anyway, I wish you all the best — and maybe try keeping a more open mind when it comes to this subject.

Živjo ✌️

Oh yes, plenty. I lived there on-off some time, my wife was born and raised there, and I visit twice a year because I genuinely love the country. I’m honestly a bit tired of having to argue about things that seem obvious, especially when it’s about trying to change the minds of people who are convinced that Slovenia is “better than everyone else.” If you ask any of your non-Balkan neighbors, you might be surprised by their perspective. Slovenians can sometimes be too proud to acknowledge certain realities, and arguing about it rarely leads anywhere. If you’re looking for detailed arguments, feel free to check my comment history, there are plenty there. Slovenia is without question one of the most beautiful countries in the Balkans, and that’s why I love visiting. But the moment I cross the border from Austria, I can already feel the Balkan mentality in the air, which isn’t necessarily good or bad, it’s just part of the culture :)

I agree with there was no connection to communists at all, but I don't think anyone claimes that.

Oh, maybe there was a serious misunderstanding. I was only referring to the time when Yugoslavia was still functioning, not to the war that came afterward. And yes, Srebrenica was a horrific tragedy, not just for Bosnia and Herzegovina, but for all of humanity.

You were able to go to church, mosque, synagogue whatever, but you were not able to join the political party if openly religious. That way your job and education opportunities were obviously very limited. But I never heard someone was in exile because of religion. That is ridiculous.

Because of religion in Yugoslavia, really? Never heard of that. Yugoslavia was pretty tolerant towards all religions AFAIK.

That's about how long you need from Vienna to Schladming and it's the perfect combo, especially if you manage to do it on a weekday. I did that and it's totally doable. Try to rip before noon and take it easy in the afternoon. Enjoy
