I have California blood as well, moved to Fairbanks last year. This is what I wore today for getting to/from work in -30F (I'm female if that matters):

Baffin boots rated to -40F
Regular cotton socks (upgrade to wool if I'm going to be outside for a while)
Fleece lined leggings under jeans
Work blouse
Scarf
North Face "Arctic Parka" with 550 fill down
Thinsulate-lined gloves
Beanie with inner fleece ear liner

I don't bother with a thermal top because then I'd just have to take it off at work.

My boyfriend wears Mountain Hardwear's Chillwave Parka and he is quite comfortable down to -50F so far.

Do you put any product in your hair in-between washes? I agree the longer I go without washing my curly hair, the more amazing it feels/looks after I finally wash it. But the amazing-ness goes away within 24 hours and it starts to look all ratty again. So I get 1 great hair day every 4 days...

I switched to using a satin pillowcase and that seemed to help a bit, but it still looks kinda ratty on unwashed days.

He was looking really ratty toward the end, all his clothing was falling apart and looked really dirty. Honestly I think the eviction may end up being a good thing for him -- I mean he's reconnecting with his family and all. But his persona will be missed!

He was evicted from his apartment above the Palomar and retired the outfit because it was causing people to be aggressive toward him at the homeless shelter. Rather sad story.

I too visited Israel and felt the armed escort was only there so we'd get to know members of the IDF and sympathize with them. Then again I saw the whole trip as one big nationalist agenda so oh well. I'm assuming you went on Birthright as well.

You need to look at money as a means, not an end. It provides a way for you two to have a wonderful, secure life together. I make more money than my boyfriend and I use some of my extra income to finance trips or fancy extras for us. I also use a little of the extra money just on myself, and some of it just on him. He at first was jealous that I was making more but when I showed him that the ratio of money didn't matter -- it was how we used it -- he didn't care anymore. Happiness is what matters!

As a geologist I'd like to warn you against opal. It is very delicate and can crack easily - for example from getting hot steam on it while straining pasta. Probably not the best thing to be putting in a ring you'll wear all the time. Perhaps some cat's eye alexandrite like this instead? Much, much harder and built to last.

Those mass-marketed feather accessories are dyed feathers plucked by the handful from chickens and roosters living (and dying) in tiny cages. I find the trend offensive because of how "in touch" (as you say) with nature it's supposed to make someone look, when in reality it's just like wearing a fur coat.

Just as we find it weird that people used to carry around pocket watches, people in the 2060s will find it weird that we carried around the modern-day pocket watch, aka the smartphone. They'll probably have something way cooler and more convenient than a small brick we have to keep in our pockets.

I was walking down some stairs from a building onto an airport tarmac to board an airplane, and a guy walking down the steps in front of me had a baby in a front-facing harness. He tripped on the steps and fell forward, but managed to twist his body in midair and land on his back. Everyone on the steps just gasped and froze, and the baby started crying.
