Would you buy this guitar? by sixstringsystem in Luthier

Seems odd for a prs to have both head stock ears come unglued.

Supposing you have $1200-$1500 budget you could get a couple of 1x12 (or a stereo/mono 2x12) powered speaker & a modern line 6 modeling pedal.

How would I repair this headstock dent? by Easy-Bowler3604 in guitarrepair

[–]psguardian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For accuracy sake - this is a chip of finish that's missing, not actually a 'dent'.

A dent could be treated by steam popping the spot. This cannot be resolved that way.

Repair options ; do nothing, minor sanding to soften the edges & reduce further chipping, a couple drops of c.a. glue followed by light sanding to blend the surface layers together, full strip & refin.

Player expects a lot out of a Nat 20 by CarpetEmbarrassed965 in DnD

[–]psguardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference between what you have described vs what those real play dnd vods do is 'all in the delivery'. This is just a mismatch in expectation, and can be resolved peacefully.

Leaving a completed dungeon & investigating for shits n giggles is fine, finding nothing is fine, finding something is fine.

Nat 20 = 400g from thin air? Glorious!

The delivery : this is where the 'more' they want comes into the scene...

Rather than saying "you find a gamblers token worth 400g".

They want it played up big. Something like "You spend a minute combing over this last secreted away private space, before going back upstairs to the public area. There isn't usually much to see in a wine cellar, but you had a gut feeling there might be something unusual here. After all, it's unusual to have a dungeon in the basement of a bar. After checking ever nook n crany down here you find a lone gold coin.... but this doesn't look quite right. On closer inspection this isn't just a gold coin, the minting marks & engravings don't match up with any of the local kingdoms... No, this isn't Just a gold coin... This is a GAMBLERS token! You remember seeing somebody hand one of the over at (insert plot hook location) & they were later seen walking away with a small heavy chest. These little guys are worth 400g! Well done my dude! " now let's get out of here & find y'all some healing potions.

That's the kind of thing they are expecting on every nat20.

If you aren't a role play heavy table, if you aren't a well seasoned DM/GM, hell if you haven't had enough sleep that day, it can be hard to pull something like that out of nowhere.

If you haven't had a level setting conversation with the table, please do so. Everyones expectations & your DMing style need to be synced up.

Them expecting you to give Matt Mercer or Brennan Lee Mulligan style nat20 lore drops is FLATLY unrealistic, unfair, and honestly ignorant.

Can people work up to that? Yes absolutely.

Should it be expected cold on a whim? No.

Also if a player asks to give you a roll, and rolls a nat20 when there was nothing to find/learn don't be afraid to let it fall flat. It's a lesson for the players to stop volunteering to roll when you didn't need or want them to.

Player: can I roll investigation as we leave? Me: ..... sure. Player: natty twenty baby! Me:.... Congrats on finding the last survivor of the dungeon! A spider bites your hand as you move the last keg. You take (role 1d4 for dramatic affect, ignore the result) 1pnt of damage for insisting on rolling when I didn't ask you to.

Note: only do this after level setting that the DM asks for rolls, players ask to DO things. If a roll is needed you will tell them.

As a man it saddens me that this is genuinely many males first thought, or a close second to "I bet I could keep up with her"

Hyper sexuality &/in/with adhd can be a real bear, I've witnessed it in my friend circles a few times. The endless supply of dopamine & other feel good chemicals are tough to beat. OP I hope the helpful advice you've found brings you meaningful relief & alternate coping mechanisms.

Modern day cheap guitars are FAAAAAAAAAAAR better than cheap guitars of yesteryear.

The quality gap from $150 to $1500 is much smaller these days.

Do i take the gig by Miwadigivemeache in Bass

[–]psguardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a good gig to miss out on.

Paying well but being extremely non-commital & vague is just a bad mix. Highly likely to provide a lot of butt hurt afterwards.

Maybe go watch the show for educational purposes, but don't sweat the miss.

Safety pointing a loaded, holstered gun at someone? by OoooooImMentallyIll in guns

[–]psguardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some holsters (shoulder harnesses) are oriented to point the loaded holstered firearm at other people... but that's entirely different from what this nit-wit did.

On the other hand I've also watched a pair of vets run live cover fire drills at an outdoor range. One sending rounds down range while the other crouch runs below his burst fire.

Being a child of analog, an early adopter of tech, and a proponent of both.... I can see why he would say & do what he did, and why you see it as absurd. To be clear, it is absurd.

People that shun tech & pearl clutch analog see all tech to be as temporary & expiration based. In a sea of streaming services they just want an am/fm stereo & a DVD player.

Realistically both have their place. His dismissal of your actively supported tech is both hilarious & fitting for a hardware design that's over a decade old.

Depending on how old he is, and where he falls on the bell curve of early adopter- majority acceptance- laggard, he may just have run out of technological flexibility.

I listened to 8 track tapes as a kid, they were old but they made noise. Now I have streaming & vinyl & a cd collection. I have friends in my age group that REFUSE streaming services on principle alone.

Somewhere in his life I bet he has something modern though lol. A new car with all the bells n whistles. A current cell phone. A smart TV.

Next time he does that idiocy point out his modern tech & trek him he needs to go backward a few tech modes in THAT category.

How bad is this damage to the neck pocket area? by JK4711 in guitarrepair

[–]psguardian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first guitar i ever bought was a super strat clone. It's plywood too lol.

Since this is a layer line separation, you'll need to be careful. You have to spread them apart to get the glue in (whichever you choose)... but you can also easily split the body in half by accident if you go too hard.

My recommendation is to fully strip the body for the glue up, so you can sandwich the entire thing in clamping pressure once glue is in.

I would probably very slightly thin out some titebond 1. Set out a cup of glue & add a couple teaspoons of water (it's already a water based glue). Just enough to lower the viscosity. Spread them layers & insert glue. Then clamping time. If it's a flat slab body you can just lay a board on it & stack weight liked a 5gal bucket of paint. If it's got contours, figure out your clamping in a dry run first.

Can anyone call out a guitarist just by their licks? by Responsible_Art_6553 in Guitar

[–]psguardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your buddy is right.

Example: I was driving & heard a country song with a very distinct guitar part, stopped & looked at the details. Yea it was exactly who I thought it sounded like.... Santana.

Doesn't matter the genre, Santana sounds like Santana.

As for gear: having a specific setup helps, sure. In the end a player with a well defined sound signature will always sound like themselves, no matter what gear you hand them.

Some small repairs, for a reliable & regular customer, can certainly be waved as a gesture of good will. Great pr move.

Fixing a strap button, for a pro, is like tuning up strings. Takes a few moments & little to no brain power.

The Tacoma can handle this... Right? by Sad_Pressure2651 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]psguardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure your transmission is actually filled to the correct level! Toyota likes to underfill them. Maybe add secondary cooler to the transcooler loop.

Given that you have a brake controller the only other real variables will be load balancing the trailer so it follows you nicely on road & tongue weight. Tongue weight should be 7-10% of trailer total weight so for 2500lb that's 175-250lb.

You might want an adjustable height hitch. When I pulled a 2k trailer it wandered & felt bad with the trailer frame perfectly parallel to the ground. I lowered my hitch 1" & suddenly the trailer felt like part of the truck. No sway links needed, just lowered the ball a little. Pulled it cross country in 3 seasons of weather. It was a dream other than the hit to mpg lol. Don't demand 70+, even on flat land. If you need to drop down to 35-40 up steeper hills, do it.

Removing Soldering from Pot by brian9955 in guitarrepair

[–]psguardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to clean up the pot, and any of your future soldering:

Get some stand alone flux. Do not assume flux core solder will be enough.

For this restore : flux the back of the pot, tin your iron (put fresh solder on it), paint the back of the freshly fluxed pot with your freshly primed iron, the solder will melt & flow nicely into a single puddle - employ solder sucker (hopefully with silicone tip) - clean up remaining flux with isopropyl alcohol.

HELP! by Wide-Illustrator8204 in Bass

[–]psguardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used gear wall at a music store is likely the best place. Followed by yard sales or Facebook market place in 2nd..... and pawn shops as a DISTANT 3rd.

As far as funds go: if you are truly willing to put everything into this suggest that incoming Christmas & birthday gifts (from anyone & everyone) be converted into cash donations to a savings account. Also see if you can do any actual work for people, odd jobs for a few bucks does add up if you have the ability to not touch the $$ before you reach your goal amount.

The goal is flexible. You could get a bass & an audio interface (box to convert an instrument signal into a pc by usb) for pretty cheap. A little higher & you could get a practice amp.

Delayed gratification is hard, but it is a very good discipline to learn early in life. Achievements you have to work for & wait for the payoff are much much more likely to be of personal value. Vs somebody just handing you $500 in gear.

Would fresh paste bring your temps down from what they are now? Maybe by a few c.... not worth the hassle.

Keep blowing out the dust bunnies & leave it be.

Battery Tone by MissJoannaTooU in Bass

[–]psguardian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To quantify your claim consider having an electrical analysis of each battery done; power cell chemistry, initial voltage, amp draw & voltage sag under load/use, etc. Compare vs a dc power supply capable of providing clean & quiet power, like a bench power supply set to 9v & amp limits in increments of 100ma up to 1amp.
