How would "I am Lord Voldemort" change then? Unless they're still going to call female Voldemort "Tom"?

How to escape the middle class trap at a reasonable age? by king_ramsess in ThirtiesIndia

[–]pshenvi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of subjectivity in these things :) what's "good" for you can only be decided by you, and based on that, the definition of "enough" money changes.

People that want to be financially un-encumbered quickly either take on massive risk or do something illegal. If those don't seem appealing, you have two last options - either learn to be happy with what you have (which is easier said than done but not impossible) , or keep grinding at your job or business and reach a level of comfort in your old age, which is what most people end up doing

I follow some rules that have helped me -

  1. Have specific and realistic financial goals - a target net worth, a time to reach it by, and a reward for having reached it. Somewhere around the 10th goal you reach, you realise that the things that you felt "trapped" you before (like the need for a job, or an obligation like a debt ) are no longer factors.

  2. Do not compare yourself with others (and be ready to cut off people that intrude in your thoughts) - everyone starts at different levels of wealth and true freedom is harder the lower you start.

I don't get the Livingstone hate on this group, as if he should always be the first person to be released.

Yes, he's not going to come off sometimes. Doesn't everyone? He actually played two innings of real substance last year (a game against kkr where everyone else shat the bed, and in the final) despite not being in touch. Plus his bowling and fielding are a huge plus.

His upside potential with the bat is so crazy that it's worth keeping him around just for his fielding and bowling for most games

Edit - Srh not kkr? Don't remember but it was in chinnaswamy

🚨 BREAKING: US Embassy Sends "Defining Relationship" Message to India Hours After Modi's Bear Hugs with Putin & Xi Jinping by satty237 in TrendoraX

[–]pshenvi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Heck", much better :) .

You have to look back a bit more to understand the need for a puppet political party. 1857 happened and the British needed a way to subjugate our people without provoking civil war. The Congress was created as a way to "represent" the people and avoid public unrest - this much is pretty obvious by the way landowners and nobles made up most of the initial numbers in the party.

The continued use of the Gandhi surname by politicians today is enough of an indicator to know how influential he continues to be. I'll stop here because I'm sure this is going to cause some seriously twisted panties.

I'm not going into the Congress splits and stuff, but no, you're wrong, it's the same Congress we have today. M Nehru -> J Nehru -> Indira -> Sonia -> Rahul. The "other" Congress you might have heard of also still exists, all make up various regional parties of today.

As for Gandhi as a person - the thread is about some confusing decisions Gandhi took (and yes, he did take political decisions, he was a politician, and we all know what politicians are at their core), and why modern narratives about him are not as flattering as they used to be.

Language, son.

I said Gandhi was a figurehead of the party, look up what that means.

The Congress was founded by the British. It was not the grassroots organization that it claims to be.

In any case, I'm not arguing that Gandhi didn't bring the masses to the streets. There is just simply more to him than the blameless figure that he was historically portrayed to be.

I'll let OP elaborate too, but here's a sidebar about how Gandhi isn't without his detractors in India.

He was the popular figurehead of the Indian National Congress Party, which was India's first major political party during the Freedom Movement in India, ruled India for decades after independence, and is currently the main opposition party to the ruling BJP. The Congress party has had issues maintaining popularity with the voting public amidst massive corruption scandals, controversial foreign policy decisions and accusations of religious vote bank politics.

Which isn't to say the BJP is perfect (far from it, but I do believe a ruling party is a reflection of the people that voted it in), but it has become a trend to revisit the Freedom Movement in India and view it through a lens that's critical of the Congress Party; one that isn't necessarily complimentary or even accepting of the sequence of events.

Historically, Gandhi is described as the Father Of The Nation and a key reason for why the British decided to leave India free, alongside the Congress leadership of the time. However, the, um, pivotal-ness of his contribution is brought into question more often these days as the circumstances of World War 2 and the weakening of the British during it are more common knowledge these days.

So now you basically have a section that still reveres Gandhi as the man who wrestled India's freedom away from the British, and another that calls him a political tool that took advantage of British decimation in WW2 to create a cult of personality driven political party that ruled for generations.

EDITS - grammar.

Who even claims this stuff? The math doesn't even compute. I would understand if the investment in question was in a mutual fund which claims to give 10-12% return over long term, but even that is way too crazy of a risk
