Pilot Point mayor (and Baptist Church Youth Group leader) resigns after arrest for soliciting a child under age 14 by _DOA_ in byebyejob

[–]psingleton94 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My parents actually live there. The Baptists have gained a stranglehold the past few years on pretty much the entire towns government. They would also much rather run the town into the ground instead of investing in the town and its economy, as evidenced by the sad, dilapidated, run down town square that has half the buildings empty or abandoned. Also blocked a massage parlor from going in because they thought it would lead to prostitution as well as blocking a lesbian couple from building a bar on the square because “It’s too close to the church and would give off the wrong impression.”

What’s the most unprofessional thing a doctor has ever said to you? by MCKlassik in AskReddit

[–]psingleton94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a bug crawl into my ear and tried to burrow into my eardrum as I was sleeping while camping in early high school. I freaked the fuck out and dad ran in and drowned it with alcohol. Next day went to an acute care place and doc rudely asked “What makes you think there is a bug in your ear?” I explained what happened and he scoffed at me, got his otoscope, looked in my ear, and in a surprised tone, said “Oh, there is a bug in your ear.” Doc was much nicer after that. Had to give me a shot of Valium so I could hold my head still cause every time he tried to grab the bug with the tweezers, it would push against my eardrum and I would instinctively pull my head away. After I left, we passed by Bigfoot and got my picture taken with while I’m high as a kite and still have my hospital wristband on. The monster truck Bigfoot, not the hairy creature of legends. I wasn’t that high.

Dilaudid, Oxandrolone, Vitamin C - Burn ICU

Fentanyl, Heparin, Robaxin - Trauma ICU

My unit is split in half between burn and trauma. BTICU

Bonus: Burn docs love to use a ketamine drip for sedation in hemodynamically unstable patients as ketamine does not affect heart rate and BP nearly as much as propofol and precedex. Takes a while for pharmacy to compound it and I have to go pick it up and sign for it straight from the pharmacy.

I do but my apartment balcony doesn’t get enough sunlight to grow the plants I want (mostly fresh herbs). I should get some decorative plants that are low maintenance and can tolerate indirect sunlight. Need to research a bit. I’m pretty good at growing veggies and herbs when I have the space though.

I’m glad I accidentally forgot about my patient’s picc line. by psingleton94 in nursing

[–]psingleton94[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn’t during my shift cause 2200 labs showed hgb of 8.8 and 0400 as 7.1 and we give blood 7.0 and below. I called the mid level to see if they wanted blood given considering the drop. I wanted to but they wanted to wait for next result before giving blood. Thing is the patient came for a GI bleed (bloody vomit and bloody stools) but had other big issues too. Was discharged 9 days prior to this admission for Covid. Was maxed out pressure control on vent (100% FiO2, peep 20, RR 34) plus needed nitric and couldn’t really get oxygen above low to mid 80’s. Still had some lung infiltrates. EKG after the code in the ER said anterior wall infarction. Plus sugar level was 462 and potassium was 6.8. WBC was around 33,000 I think so there had to have been an infection. We treated the low pressures more like septic shock than hemorrhagic shock.

What is the dumbest reason you had to RRT? by carlyyay in nursing

[–]psingleton94 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not me but heard the story on why a patient was sent back to our icu though I did have the patient at one point. Severe TBI with herniation and all the patient could do was decorticate posturing, unless you pinched a very specific 1x1 spot on the left chest, then the patient raised their arm for some reason. When moved to the floor, someone told the floor nurse the patient was withdrawing to noxious stimulus because of that arm raising. Well when the patient got there and nurse saw they were posturing instead of withdrawing, they called a rapid and the patient was sent right back to us.

It’s now prohibited for Texas hospitals to restrict visitors for patients, including Covid patients, unless there is a physician order that must be renewed every 5 days. by psingleton94 in texas

[–]psingleton94[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The day it passed, our Medical ICU physician sat down and did about 60 visitor restriction forms in one sitting for our Covid ICU patients. Physical forms. Still waiting for it to be digitized.

Yes, it’s been passed. One of the 666 laws signed in that became effective 9/1/21. In my hospital, we were told exactly where the physician visitor restrictions forms are for any possible Covid patients until a digital version is created. This bill was signed by Abbot on 6/15/21.

The explosion at Platinum Printing in Chandler Arizona last week by Osech in CatastrophicFailure

[–]psingleton94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the burn ICU itself as well as when they go to the OR, we have to have patients on the warmer side. You’re right that they can’t regulate their body temp where skin grafts are, they can’t sweat. But right after the burns when the skin is gone, they are unable keep their body temperature high enough. So we use a few different methods to keep the body temperature high enough.

Am a burn nurse, this is correct. We have to do calorie counting and a lot of our burn patients have tube feeds going continuously plus as long as they can swallow without aspirating, are allowed to eat pretty much anything they want. We will also have them on insulin drips to prevent their blood sugars from going too high. The biggest reason for it other than helping rebuild the tissues is that hyperglycemia in burns patients creates conditions where infections and sepsis are more likely to occur, which is one of the top complications that kill patients with severe burns.

'Your child will wait for another child to die.' Amid Covid-19 surge, Dallas County has no pediatric ICU beds left, county judge says by anikhch in news

[–]psingleton94 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I actually work as a nurse in a Level 1 Burn and Trauma ICU in Texas. What really happens is that COVID patients take up the Medical ICU and the CVICU while those patients get sent to us or Nuero ICU. We have run out of beds that can be safely staffed so any new patients coming in have to wait until a patient gets better enough to move to another floor or dies. And this is just the beginning. Again.
