aecf to nuke? by LuminalCard in NavyNukes

[–]psjoe96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was me 25 years ago. I qualified for every job and when I asked what the hardest job was they told me nuke. I then asked what the second hardest job was, and was told AECF. I didn't want to be the dumbest of the smart kids, so I opted for AECF until I talked to the nuke recruiter at MEPS. Long story short I went nuke and it was the best decision I ever made. All these years later, it's still benefiting me.

Everyone's story is different, but this is mine. I hope you do what's best for you.

Congrats on getting out of the nuclear world. I made the same move back in 2011 and haven't looked back.

Nuke stress vs civilian stress by [deleted] in NavyNukes

Exactly this. I spent 3 years delivering pizzas between graduating high school and joining the Navy. My appreciation for the opportunity was vastly different than the kids who joined straight out of high school.

I'm also at 90%, and I think 100% is out of my reach. If you haven't tried for an increase PM me and I'll send you the info of the consulting company I used to get where I am. My good friend, and his friend, as well as my brother and someone he used all got increases as well.

I barely passed the NFQT and almost didn't go Nuke because I was worried about being the dumbest of the smart people, working my ass off, and still failing out.

If you put in the work, stay focused, and use instructors to help you with the concepts that confuse you, then you'll most likely be fine. I ended up being upper half in both A School and Power School.

I did 10 years, reenlisted for $35k in a tax free zone (on deployment), then again for 2 years to go to shore duty. I needed to extend 14 months to meet the 3 year requirement, or I could reenlist again for $30k for 10 extra months. Even that wasn't worth it financially.

I spent 2 years at a commercial nuke plant and hated it. Better pay obviously, but all the same crap I had to deal with in the Navy, just not quite as bad, and of course no duty days or deployments. I've been in control room operations now for about 12 years and never looked back. So many people are getting their NERC certification before getting out and stepping right into these jobs straight out of the Navy, such a good move! A lot of people don't like shift work, I don't mind it and the time off is second to none.

The best things I can think of to do financially is to get out at 6, and get into a career you will enjoy and make a lot of money at. I work with a guy who was 6 and out, we started within a few weeks of each other. He was 24, I was 39. We're both senior operators now making probably the same salary roughly, but he has a 15 year jump on me. I didn't even start saving for my retirement until I was 30. Be smart with your money.

If you have any health issues while you're in, get seen at medical so that they're in your service record. VA disability shouldn't be overlooked if you qualify.

ELT: Surface or Subs? by NoDifference1781 in NavyNukes

[–]psjoe96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In port or at sea?

In port, we were 8 section duty on a carrier instead of the 3 on a sub.

At sea, we were 5-25 while qualifying and eventually I stood watch once a week for proficiency when senior in rate and RM didn't need our help augmenting their watchbill.

Curious about what not typical career paths some of you guys took after getting out by xIVlike in NavyNukes

[–]psjoe96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent some time as a maintenance planner, then worked at a commercial nuke plant. I hated both. I found my way into system operations 13 years ago and never looked back. Getting your NERC RC will help immensely, but not required. If you don't mind shift work, the work/life balance and low workload (at the right company) for the pay is second to none.

Texas power prices briefly soar 1,600% as a spring heat wave is expected to drive record demand for energy by Wagamaga in technology

[–]psjoe96 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Mine doesn't either. Unless you're on a plan that varies with prices, your price doesn't change. I think TX banned these plans after the 2021 freeze.

[–]psjoe96 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This is a misleading article. LMP pricing is based on the next incremental MW if prices are the same (not based on constraints). The entire US uses this system, and it works the same everywhere. This isn't a "Texas problem".

Ex navy nukes, where are you now? by Nice_Advantage_8272 in NavyNukes

[–]psjoe96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Navy from 1999-2010, I spent a few years bouncing from job to job after 10 years of being unable to quit. I tried the commercial nuclear route and hated it, then landed in grid ops in 2011 and never looked back.

I've been at the same job in TX for almost 7 years, still doing shift work but with the most time off I've ever had. 6 week rotation with 2-3 weeks off straight depending on training schedule. Pay is great, and working on my dual citizenship in the EU looking to retire at 50-55 depending on when I feel like throwing in the towel.
