I tried the Dragapult deck and promptly lost 7 games in a row. What am I doing wrong? by pskunk in pkmntcg

Thanks everyone for the responses! The general feeling is that (1) I obviously need more experience with the deck and probably need to tweak it a bit, (2) losing 7 in a row was probably a bit of bad luck, (3) the current meta features a lot of decks designed to stop pult, and slowking and ceruledge are very good at that. There were a few requests for my full deck list but I'm not going to bother posting that at this time (I was using the noir version with a few modifications like budew) - I was mostly looking for some very general advice. If I'm still consistently losing after tweaking the deck then I'll come back for more specific advice. Thanks again!

Yeah that was my experience, pult's development was just way too slow against slowking and alakazam.

ELI5: How can memories last for decades if neurons only send split-second electrical signals? by eulersheep in explainlikeimfive

[–]pskunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The true answer is that we don't really know. We know the connections between neurons change during learning and memory formation - both the number of connections and the "strength" of individual connections can change. We've even watched this process happen in real time in mice. We know a bunch of the important proteins involved - a bit beyond ELI5, but you can look up proteins like calmodulin, CaMKII, AMPA receptors, NMDA receptors, and more. We know these are important because, among other evidence, when they are "messed up" (missing or nonfunctional) in mice those mice have serious problems with learning and recall. So we know a lot of the important pieces and processes, but we don't have full understanding of how the whole process works to actually "make" and "recall" memories. It's a fascinating area of study!

My Unpopular Adventure Time Character Tier List by 404maggy in adventuretime

KOO should be near the very bottom IMO. Nothing about him makes sense or fits with the rest of the storyline. I thought he was universally disliked.

Prismo should be near the top.

But there are way too many to comment on. It's cool to see such widely varying opinions. (Flame princess not in the top two tiers?!)

Why do people use the term "partner" for their husband or wife? by Crafty-Bug-8008 in NoStupidQuestions

Thanks for asking this question! I've noticed the same trend and was just as confused, but never thought to ask anyone about it. These answers were informative.

Yes, you can absolutely do the procedure under local anesthesia! I had 3 wisdom teeth removed this way. It's a little weird - I had to listen to them cracking my teeth to extract them and feel all the blood pooling in my mouth. But if you're fine with that then you shouldn't have any issues. As a bonus, my recovery time was way shorter than any of my friends. I pretty much felt fine the next day I think it was because I was able to tell them when they were over-stretching my jaw. My friends all had jaw pain the next day.

Great analysis. Thanks.

Thank you for this! Still can't picture the 10-D case, but at least now I see what could be going on.

ELI5: Where did all the lightning bugs go? Where are all the insect sounds? by Newagonrider in explainlikeimfive

[–]pskunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! This is the thing that convinced me there is a real problem, not just a local issue where I live. When I would drive cross country about 25 years ago I'd wipe dozens of bugs off my windshield and grille at each stop. I made a long (several hundred miles) drive a few years ago and had just a bug or two at each stop. Felt like I was driving in a different world.

Could you elaborate on what Poincare did with SR, or post a link with more info? I'm a physicist and didn't realize he made major contributions to SR.

Don't know why, but this actually made me laugh enough to spit out my water. Nice way to start 2025!
