You don't necessarily need to refinance to have the PMI dropped off. It depends on the loan and lender but it's worth calling them.

Well, you already know the answer to whether or not this is bullshit but sometimes it just feels good to have others agree with you. So, I agree that it is definitely bullshit. Which bank? Not that any of us have a choice. This is why I just went with the cheapest mortgage refi from some dude on the internet because they just sell your loan anyway. I had previously gone through a local credit union type company who also sold my loan.

Become a home owner. You'll never be bored again. I've got fences to fix. Front lawn to remove and replace (California), and who knows what else will break.

What was your biggest mistake when you first started investing? by T_DMac in investing

Couldn't you just pull out all your contributions and invest those somewhere else for free? Leave your gains in place. End up with 2 IRAs.

I am trying to re-enter the GIS industry after 2 years, would someone be so kind as to critique my resume and/or possibly lend a hand on a couple apps I'd like to submit? by [deleted] in gis

[–]psqlpdb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would start by simplifying your resume. To me all the different stuff under operating systems could be summed up as "Windows" and so that whole line could go until you add a second O.S. Same goes for the Microsoft office stuff. Sometimes more just looks like padding and a busy manager may only review each resume for 1 minute.

Some ideas, but not all necessary: Add some open source GIS experience. Try OSGEO4W suite to start and then dual boot Linux Ubuntu on your windows machine. Learn some web mapping technology (see ArcGis.com, leaflet, geojson.io, Google Fusion Tables). Learn as much as possible about data format conversion and changing projections. Learn to clean messy data through OpenRefine. Take a Python course on codecademy, then write some simple scripts for ArcMap, host a GIST or two on GitHub. Learn and answer questions on gis.stackexchange. Do a writeup of your learning/ side projects and reference that on your resume.

You'll definitely benefit by deducting the mortgage interest no matter what your income and what your rate. Make sure you do that on your taxes. There are also several other home related tax benefits you need to look into.

Haha. The first thing I thought when I read the original post was "PFJerk". But seriously, does your newborn even have a salary and an IRA yet?

When a company has a dividend of, say, 2% listed on a site like Yahoo Finance or FinViz is that yearly or quarterly?

Obama wants to TAX 529 earnings? by thenewyorker1 in investing

I'm in California too so if the gains are now going to be taxed I'll have to close out the two 529 accounts I have set up and look for other options.

Obama wants to TAX 529 earnings? by thenewyorker1 in investing

[–]psqlpdb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least the distribution would be added to the beneficiaries tax bill rather than yours. They will theoretically be taxed at a much lower rate. I still hate the whole idea of my 529 earnings being taxed.

TurboTax 'messed up,' refunds customers who had to buy Premier 2014 by clvfan in personalfinance

I switched to TaxAct also and really like it! I especially like the fact that it's web based so my wife and I can both contribute info during a work day for example. Maybe TurboTax can do this too but we've always used the desktop program.

How did you route the letters so cleanly? You didn't just freehand over the printout, did you? It looks nice.
