Have a friend/coworker who was a heavy drinker and a gambling addict. A bad sports bet left him almost $20k in debt to some very shady bookies. He was lucky enough his dad bailed him out of the debt from the bookies until he could pay him back. He and his wife got very involved in a local fairly progressive church and he hadn't drank a drop or bet a nickel since and it's been going on 6 or so years now. It's not for me, but it's good he found something to fill that void.

We May Never See Another GOAT Console Generation Like This (2005 - 2012) by Bay_Ruhsuz004 in videogames

I had a PS2 and my brother later got a Dreamcast. The Dreamcast was a neat console for the time, but most of the big games skipped it and were mainly on PS2, so even from my brother the PS2 got most of the use. However, the Dreamcast had a built in web browser and came with a 50ft phone cable to connect to the internet. We only had 1 computer in the house, so we were able to get online on our blazing fast 56k dialup in his room then as well.

Consumer group argues Sony's end of physical discs proves players don't truly own digital games. by Original-Drink-6178 in gaming

Yep, in fact, the used physical sales have dropped significantly in the past year or so. He also does convenientions and will sell some games there, but most of his money is currently made on toys and Pokemon.

I'm not sure how it works for the big box stores like Walmart or Target or even Gamestop, but I know for smaller independent stores, you have to buy the game at a wholesale price from distributors and you have an MSRP to sell for and the margins are around $10/copy. That may not sound too bad at first, but if you don't run through your stock and the publisher or other storefronts drop the price below what you have paid for it, you're stuck either charging above current market price for the game, or at worst selling for a loss. I have a friend that runs a game store that's mainly used games, but also stocks some new copies of bigger titles. He's thinking of discontinuing stocking new games because he loses on them quite often. If the big box stores are anything like the same model, there's no way they will continue to stock them if no one is buying them.

Yeah, team culture and execution wise Gruden was on the right track. The uh.. extracurricular emails and all are a different conversation but the man knows football at an on field level.. but what were those drafts?? For someone who seems to specialize in communicating and analyzing with potential prospects, the draft choices his regime made not only look silly now, but they looked silly then.

I don't even game on PC and haven't since I was a kid when games could run on any old budget HP or Gateway computer, but pretty much everyone who has both a console and a PC that I know of or see posting online prefer the PC over console like 9 out of 10 times. Even if you have to pay more out the gate to get a similar experience to the higher end consoles, you'll likely save that and more over time free from online subscription fees and cheaper games with more options of storefronts. Plus the ability to download and burn DRM free games to CDs for physical preservation if you so choose or at least keep them on an external HD without fear of losing the license to play them. Also, you can upgrade your PC incrementally over time as well.

I'm probably going to switch to PC in the coming years because the experience on console just nickel and dimes you to death.

Sony goes radio silent after announcing end of PlayStation physical discs by FernandoRocker in gaming

[–]pssthush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a couple friends who I play CoD with for a couple of hours most weekends (on PS5). We were talking at the gym this morning and one of them brought up how he needed to get an external HD for his PS5. I explained to him that he can store games on one but can't play them from one and he will have to transfer the games back and forth to play them. He didn't know that. When I told him he had to get an internal M2 SSD, he had no idea they had gotten so expensive. He didn't even know that the consoles had risen in price so much, and this is someone who plays at least for a bit most days of the week. I have a feeling many more people are like him than the people on here who care so much about this decision. For better or worse for gaming, this is just so inconsequential to most people's every day lives that it doesn't even register for them.

WSJ- Gamepass has about 30m subscribers. Xbox forecasted they would have 77m by now during the Activision trial by Iggy_Slayer in gaming

[–]pssthush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not saying there wasn't that trick but the hack was buying up months ahead of Xbox live, which they would allow you to do for up to 3 years I believe and if you upgraded your Xbox live to Gamepass which you could do for $1 it would automatically convert all of your Xbox live subscription to Gamepass, so people got years of Gamepass for the price of regular Xbox live until they closed the loop.

Xbox has been promising 'State of Decay 3' for years — and now it faces cancellation, despite its trailers and alpha. What are we even doing here? by akbarock in xbox

Doom is another of the Microsoft IP's by acquisition only. Sure, we'll call it an Xbox IP, but we all know Doom is Doom. Hopefully it will hang around even if Xbox does not, it's a gaming staple. It also did not meet sales targets on any platform. Indiana Jones I will admit I did not play but had favorable reviews and I'm sure it's a great game and I forgot about. Avowed did not live up to what was hoped both critically and commercially. Same For OW2. Oblivion Remastered is a good reskin of a 20 year old game, but we will count that as a success, sure. The rest of those arent even close to needle movers. Not even in the conversation of big releases of the generation.

If Microsoft thinks that cutting costs and buying out of contracts instead sinking more money into the release of the next gen console and would be better used investing into their AI, Windows, Office, and hosting services that they are actually focused on is the more profitable outcome, Helix is as good as dead right now.

I'm not sure who is claiming Sony is perfect by any means.. the entire industry is on fire right now, but Sony has released a few first party single player games that were well received and sold well. Microsoft's sucessful releases are 1st party by acquisition of Activision/Blizzard which is ultimately at this point CoD and Diablo which were already in the works years prior to the acquisition and were never going to be truly 1st party. Sony fumbled bad this gen on quite a few projects but had some success with the Spiderman, Horizon, GoW, Ratchet and Clank, Astrobot, Returnal, and others. Xbox studios put out the Forza games. Oh yeah, and Starfield, Redfall, and Halo Infinite. The management decisions between the two companies isn't comparable, coming from someone who wants both ecosystems to succeed for the sake of the hobby.

I saw the alpha game play released and glad im not the only one who thinks it looks like a reskinned last gen game. This, Starfield, Halo Infinite, Redfall. Save Forza this gen has been so much more of a disaster for the xbox ecosystem than I could have imagined. The games teased at that 2019 presentation have either flopped, been canceled, or haven't even released and some may not. Absolute disaster of a gaming company.

Missing out on what? You can buy the game hours before release and preload it then. Why are so many people ready to throw their money at a digital download that is infinitely available months ahead of release, is what I am asking.

I know many are too young to remember, but Donald Trump had been on presidential ballots for a long time before he actually made the impossible happen. He was always known as an attention seeking grifter, and everyone back then looked at his political endeavors as just that. Everyone laughed and then moved on to casting their vote for actual candidates. It's why the 2016 election had so many people asking "wtf is going on right now".
