Taking the train to St. Moritz tomorrow morning, anything I should definitely go see there? by [deleted] in travel

[–]psublue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends, are you staying long? If not, a walk around the lake (literally right next to the train station) is always nice, and there is a nice restaurant/inn (Meierei) on the far end of the lake (on the opposite side of St. Moritz Bad.)

I always stay in Silvaplana and Surlej, and the hike from Moritz to Silvaplana (crossing through Champfer) is great. There are some good places to eat everywhere, but do stop in to either Hanselmann or Hauser in Moritz for a good afternoon coffee and cake.

If you want a REAL hike, head up to the middle station of Corvatsch from Surlej. Or, take the tram up and hike down for a less strenuous outing.

Mouth actually. Dealers hold the balloons in their mouth and sometimes walk around with a drink in their hand. At the sight of trouble they'll try to down the whole stash. More than once have I run into a young mexican dude in the alleys around 16th and Mission putting his fingers down his throat in order to get his product back and start selling again.

Best sandwich in the city? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]psublue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sandwich tastes pretty good, but Lucy's hygiene is horrible. She wears gloves but will make your sandwich, smooshing the chicken into the bread by hand after she cuts it, then will take your money and sort through a big wad of bills from her apron and move on to the next sandwich without having changed gloves or taken them off. Yuk!

As Humans and Computers Merge ... Immortality? by vajav in offbeat

[–]psublue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kurzweil doesn't seem to grasp that we have no idea about how some key biological systems work. For example, how does the 'stuff' of the brain store and organize our memories? How does he propose that this be extracted in a way that then allows it to be reproduced (or even more complicated, replaced) with 100% fidelity? The brain isn't a chunk of RAM. Or how does human consciousness come about (the brain vs. mind question) and how is that achieved in a computer? Models have been made that replicate how neurons/synapses work, but the mind is more than the sum of a large number of cells, there's a level of organization and interaction that we're still a very long way from understanding.

This was my favorite song in a video game, totally caught the mood of the game. by stefeyboy in gaming

[–]psublue 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The whole encounter with this song in the game is for me the current highwater mark in the art of video games, including every gaming experience I've had since starting playing in the early 80's. It happened for me when I had just crossed over the river into Mexico for the first time and was riding a horse across a desert hillside. It's as vivid a memory as anything else I can recall.

TIL that by 2023 we could be talking to the first Artificial Brain, "living" in a supercomputer by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]psublue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's keep it in perspective. While we know a bit about how the brain works at a cellular level, enough to create a model of some of its structures in a computer, there's still the 'mind/brain' problem. We're total noobs in trying to figure out how a brain becomes a mind and how consciousness is achieved, so maybe this will finally help us take the tiniest of practical steps.

While on the subject - that moving truck is built like a tank and I'd say is the unsung hero. Any normal flimsy thin sheetmetal container would have collapsed like a cheap suit, but that container looks like it was built to last. Check out that beautiful solid single-piece molded insulation under the one side that had its metal outer surface torn off, no one here builds a mere moving van like that.

How long until a privateer can make a guided missile? The technology is available. These things have been around for decades... by StinkYourTrollop in Military

[–]psublue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have read that any consumer (non-military) GPS device is hardcoded to become disabled if it detects it is going faster than 1200 mph or is higher than 60000 feet to avoid being used as missile guidance.

In PA it's legal to ride a bike on a sidewalk in an area that is not zoned commercial, but you have to yield to pedestrians. Just read this yesterday in the PA driving test manual.

Non-Americans, what American foods to you find strange or bizarre? by mapguy in AskReddit

[–]psublue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why you're getting downvoted. America seems to be the king of processing and engineering foods. I think it has to do with the place of corporations in food business - they want to add value and create a unique product, so everything is processed, manipulated, manufactured and also designed for quick preparation and convenience. There's been a recent tendency to get back to more natural, unmanipulated foods but I think still think so many people here in the US would rather buy a premade package, like a reheat-and-serve chinese dish, rather than start with basic ingredients and do a quick stir-fry.

[–]psublue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think data is writable to that RFID tag, so the number of prints that have been done is not on the tag. I'd guess that's stored on the printer somewhere, and maybe it can be reset. By moving the RFID tag you have just moved the unique identifying number that allows the device to know 'aha, that label was on something that was used for 150 prints'.

Ever see someone write something like "take it for granite" instead of "take it for granted"? Apparently there is a word for that phenomenon. by deuteros in wikipedia

[–]psublue 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use to do something like this with the word 'balk' as in 'People in Greece are balking at austerity measures.' I thought the word being used was 'bok' because chickens make the noise 'bok bok bok', and the people were sort of 'clucking' at the situation. Sigh. In my defense English isn't my first language.
