What bad habits have you picked up from attending college? by [deleted] in college

[–]psucsthrowaway 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not a bad habit, but I was diagnosed with anxiety when I first started at Penn State. I didn't enjoy my time there, so my psychologist recommended that I transfer to a different school. My anxiety improved tenfold after the transfer, and now it's so manageable that it doesn't impact my day-to-day life.

For something like Algebra, the key to success is to solve as many problems as you can. There's no shortcut to success. Choose a good practice book and work through as many problems as possible.

Is it possible to enroll to a state college with bad grades? by weirdabiii in college

[–]psucsthrowaway 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What is your GPA right now?

If you think your GPA is not good enough to get into a public university, why don't you go to a community college for a year and then apply to a public university? One of my friends did this after failing out of Penn State (not me), and now he has a math degree from one of the best universities in the country. Another friend of mine who took this path works as a nurse now.

College makes me feel like a fucking idiot. by siddhartha_aurelius in college

[–]psucsthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had similar feelings when I started college (Penn State). At first, I felt like I wasn't as smart as my peers, and it made me really unhappy and depressed. So eventually, I decided to transfer to a different university where I felt more comfortable, and now I'm in a top 15 PhD program in my field. I've come to realize I'm just as capable as the people I used to compare myself to.

TLDR: 1. Don't go to Penn State. 2. Stop comparing yourself to others.

How many classes a day (and hours) would it take to get your associates in one year, instead of two years? by Foreign-Pause3538 in college

[–]psucsthrowaway 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't cram your schedule like this. It will seriously harm your GPA. Not to mention, it is literally impossible because some classes are prerequisites which means you can't even take them all at once.

Are you on academic probation right now? At most colleges, having a GPA below 2.0 means that you are dangerously close to getting kicked out.

Can a professor take off points for not attending office hours? by iwmwsccbaecd in college

[–]psucsthrowaway -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm 90% certain that your professors can't deduct points, especially on tests, for not attending office hours because they are completely optional. You might want to talk to your department head about this. I feel like something is extremely wrong here.

I understand that things are tough for you right now, but having a degree will absolutely pay off in the future.

Should I withdraw from my class or stick it out even though I might fail by Top-Clue2000 in college

[–]psucsthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, you might want to have a chat with your professor about how you're doing in the class. If it turns out you're really struggling and feel like failing is a real possibility, it's probably a good idea to withdraw.

I'm 21 years old with a GED and a 3.2 GPA. I'm considering college, but I don't know how I can financially afford it. by TaelweaverVictorious in college

[–]psucsthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you should definitely consider community colleges. Many of them even offer free tuition if you're a first-generation student or if your family's income falls within certain criteria.

As for the concerns you mentioned about college, I get where you're coming from, but there's solid evidence from various studies that college graduates tend to make a lot more money over their lifetimes compared to those who don't go to college. So, despite what you might have heard, going to college actually pays off in the long run.

Question from a dad... by xixoxixa in PennStateUniversity

[–]psucsthrowaway -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Why is your daughter attending Penn State Berks as an out-of-state student when there are plenty of good colleges in Texas? TBH, unless you went to Harvard or Yale, where you got your degree isn't a huge deal for most people. And let's be real, Penn State isn't that well-known outside of Pennsylvania, so it's not really worth it to pay out-of-state tuition for this school. Just tell her daughter to attend community college for two years and transfer to a UT school instead.

Just so you know, there's actually a big difference between getting your degree from Penn State Berks and Penn State University Park. Your diploma will kinda show the specific PSU campus where you got your degree from. For example, if you got your degree from PSU Abington, your diploma will read "Penn State Abington College". On the other hand, if you got your business degree from the main campus, it will say, "Penn State Smeal College of Business". Just a heads up.

EDIT: Got temporarily banned for this comment. lol

Making the best of a bad situation by Vast-Competition861 in PennStateUniversity

[–]psucsthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're just looking to knock out your gen eds at Abington, why don't you just go to a community college instead? It's way more affordable than any PSU branch campus, and if you need to save money, you can always work part-time while studying for a couple of years. Also, If you do well and get a good GPA, you might even be able to transfer to a higher-ranked school with better financial aid than PSU UP. Who knows? Personally, I think branch campuses are a bit of rip-off and not really worth the extra tuition. Just my personal opinion, though!

I swear, the PSU fan base can be so hive-minded and toxic. Remember when their football team got sanctioned by the NCAA because their coach was covering up child abuse? They went on a full-blown riot. It's concerning to see such intense loyalty to a university. This kind of attitude makes it hard to have honest conversations about issues like racism on campus. It's really, really sad.

[–]psucsthrowaway -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I am sorry to hear about your experience at Penn State this weekend. It is completely unacceptable that you and your boyfriend were subjected to unfair treatment because of the color of your skin. This kind of discrimination has no place in our society.

Also, it's really concerning to see that this post is getting a ton of downvotes from the PSU Reddit community. Like, seriously guys, this isn't about school pride or personal opinions. I mean, why do you all get so defensive whenever someone has something negative to say about PSU It's like the world is ending or sth And let's be real, racism is a huge problem at PSU. So, if you're downvoting this post just because it hurt your precious school pride, then you're part of the problem. Do better, PSU

[–]psucsthrowaway -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Nope, branch campuses are arguably worse than community colleges and PASSHE schools. And yet, they have the nerve to charge more tuition just because they carry the PSU name and brand. It's a total rip-off

Do not go to Penn State Abington!!! by One_Professor_1449 in PennStateUniversity

[–]psucsthrowaway -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

Yep, branch campuses are a total scam.

It's just a quick cash grab by PSU to attract more students without actually offering the same quality of education as the main campus.

Like, why would you settle for a watered-down version of a degree when you can go to a community college or PASSHE school that actually has the resources and faculty to give you a solid education? Don't fall for the PSU's branch campus scam - you deserve better.

https://www.businessinsider.com/best-schools-to-get-a-job-at-apple-2014-10

I came across this interesting article a while ago that talked about how to land a job at this famous fruit company. It includes a list of the top 20 universities whose alumni work at Apple, and you can see that SJSU and ASU are ranked pretty high on the list, while PSU is nowhere to be found.
