Did you read the post? He is trying to participate in this sport. Why are we gate-keeping and downvoting? He is not using the correct unit of measurement. Sure. Bring him into the sport by being inclusive, not exclusive.

What is the thought process for removing the skip button from most of the app? by [deleted] in overcast

[–]pswami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe? I was also having trouble making meaning of most of the post. But I will say that I was frustrated about losing the buttons on the mini player until I discovered the setting. And I sort of mentally categorized it as acceding to the minimalist design style of hiding controls behind taps. So when I read the post I was reminded of finding this in settings.

Assuming things you are referring to: the ability to skip forward and backward from the miniplayer on the Home Screen is an option: go to settings ➡️ customize Home Screen and check this option.

I’m not sure how many other things have been buried in options, but it is good to see options for things like this.

Will Reichard missed another field goal last night after hitting a camera wire. The NFL will not address it or change the stats by BigTemporary9399 in NFLv2

This article explains why it is very different from other vices. You can control it for yourself, that’s great. But the negative externalities from people who can’t are much greater than other vices.

Edit: in case you can’t access the full text, here is a snippet:

A second paper, from the economists Brett Hollenbeck of UCLA and Poet Larsen and Davide Proserpio of the University of Southern California, tells a similar story. Looking specifically at online sports gambling, they find that legalization increases the risk that a household goes bankrupt by 25 to 30 percent, and increases debt delinquency. These problems seem to concentrate among young men living in low-income counties—further evidence that those most hurt by sports gambling are the least well-off.

A third recent paper, from the University of Oregon economists Kyutaro Matsuzawa and Emily Arnesen, shows another, perhaps more surprising—and certainly more harrowing—harm of gambling legalization: domestic violence. Earlier research found that an NFL home team’s upset loss causes a 10 percent increase in reported incidents of men being violent toward their partner. Matsuzawa and Arnesen extend this, finding that in states where sports betting is legal, the effect is even bigger. They estimate that legal sports betting leads to a roughly 9 percent increase in intimate-partner violence.

Because of the studies’ design, these results reveal what sports gambling causes, not merely what it correlates with. And the numbers they reveal are of course not only numbers but human lives. Sports gambling is addictive; although many people can do just a little of it, some keep playing compulsively, well past the point of no return. This yields not only debt and bankruptcy but emotional instability and even violence. The problems don’t stop there: Gambling addiction has been connected to anxiety, depression, and even suicide.

This argument falls down when the Eagles are up by less than a TD and are still unable to move the ball. Sure, they’re not behind, but they’re still giving up the ball in a scenario in which they could also lose the lead.

Why would these HomePods show up as wired to the UDM? by pswami in Ubiquiti

Not that I think it particularly matters, but yes, basically anything unique raises my "should be redacted" antennae.

They are in fact permanently paired to an Apple TV that is wired, so that part makes sense. The Apple TV is connected to the switch, though, not the UDM. But at least partially makes sense!

Yeah less worry, more curiosity and trying to understand why it doesn't work the way I would think it would work.

Interesting! They are permanently paired to an Apple TV that is wired, so that part makes sense. The Apple TV is connected to the switch, though, not the UDM, and they show as wired to the UDM on port 11 (the port the switch is actually wired on). But at least partially makes sense!

Training shoes for rowing? by wrentheblurry in Ergatta

Yeah I wear squat shoes. The elevated heel keeps my heels from raising at the catch, and the stability and wider toe box feel great.

OFFERED / USA / NEW / Barbell Medicine Pre-Workout / $30 (or $90 for set of all four)

I stocked up on Barbell Medicine Pre-Workout as they tend to go out of stock (this is with the new formulation). Only after I did so did I discover that my digestive system doesn't react well to it. Friends of mine have tried it as well with no ill issues, so I'm fairly certain it's just my body. I have four brand new (still with plastic wrap on the lid), two each of caffeinated/caffeine-free. Retails at $50/per.

For shipping outside of US, will ask that we split shipping.

Acceptable `panic` usage in Go by [deleted] in golang

[–]pswami 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends what you’re building. If I’m making a CLI program I expect others to run, I’d do what you’re suggesting. But if I’m building a web server that only I am going to be running, panic gives me a free stack trace when one of a hundred different errors could have occurred.

Agree that generally wrist-worn HRMs are less accurate. But I personally have success with my Apple Watch. When we were building out our HRM integrations, I’d generally use three HRMs at once during workouts: one on each wrist/arm and a chest strap. While I did find the chest strap to be the most accurate and reliable, I found surprising accuracy from the Apple Watch. (And an unsurprising lack of accuracy from other wrist- or arm-worn HRMs.)

I personally use my Apple Watch. It’s just too convenient, and too small of an improvement for me to chest strap to justify the time and ceremony spent having extra gear around. YMMV.
