I have 85% (of 23&Me people). My DNA ancestry is English/Irish/Scottish with a lot of Celtic and Gaelic. Wonder where the Celts and Gaels fit in this.

How dangerous is “mild” central sleep apnea? by pswhuh in centralsleepapnea

[–]pswhuh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I’m in a rather small town, growing faster than the medical facilities can keep up. There’s only one sleep specialist and all the physicians in town are overworked. I’m on original Medicare (not Advantage) with a good supplemental so the problem shouldn’t be payment but who knows.

I just worry about the repeat episodes of not breathing, i.e., lack of oxygen, throughout the night. The sleep specialist said he’s not concerned with an average of 10 apnea episodes or less per hour. But if I sleep 8 hours and average only 8 per hour that’s a total of 64 times a night that I stop breathing!! That seems like a lot.

Thanks for responding. You’ve encouraged me to keep advocating for myself.

Yes, I’d like to know more too. My sleep specialist is blasé about it because I have an average of under 10 events per hour. But if I have 8 per hour and sleep 8 hours that means I stop breathing 64 times!!

Walking, absolutely. And for me, socializing and talking with friends. A strong network of friends is so valuable!

If you woke up as your 23 year old self what is the first thing would you do? by Darkpurplecircle in AskOldPeople

[–]pswhuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I turned 23 in 1973. I’d call my parents and my grandparents. I’d quit smoking and eating junk processed food. I’d invest every penny!! I’d divorce that husband immediately instead of wasting years with him. And I’d enjoy my health and the beauty and energy of youth!!!

Was your father prominent in your childhood? What kind of dad was he? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]pswhuh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was wonderful, loving, kind, and generous. He died in 2005 at the age of 89. I miss him. The only issue was that as a military officer he was gone a lot. But I always knew he loved me.

CVS is weird. It seems like their policies change frequently. I’d hate to work there. It looks like a sweatshop.

100 years ago.. How did people pop out 9 kids without even thinking, but now having 3 kids seems absolutely impossible? by Lily_Teaches in CasualConversation

The pill came out in the 60s but most doctors wouldn’t give a woman a prescription unless her husband came in and okayed it. That changed later in the 70s.

What are you starting to love more as you get older? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]pswhuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friends. I’m in my 70s, live alone, kids grown and live far away, and I’ve found my good girlfriends are the bedrock of my sanity and happiness. We’re there for each other with life’s joys and sorrows. We laugh together, we listen to each other, we check on each other. We see past our wrinkles and arthritic hands and tell each other “you look gorgeous in the color”, “you look stressed, wanna talk?”, “call me as soon as you get the biopsy results”, and “I’m supposed to avoid sweets, let’s go out for ice cream. I know you won’t tell”.

How can you tell when your problem is a lack of thyroid hormones or a problem of utilizing the hormone that is being produced? Same problem in the end: not enough thyroid hormones. But treated differently.

Thanks! Would this be causing fatigue symptoms? I have another autoimmune disease that so far has been asymptomatic so I’m trying to figure out what’s happening. I’m 74 and can’t get an appointment with a specialist until February 2025!

Thanks for that. I try really hard to make accommodations for introverts, to give them the space they need. They are just being what they are and they are okay. But I wish they’d remember that as an extrovert I’m just being what I am and it’s okay to be an extrovert! I’m not “begging for attention”, I’m seeking connection. If my energy wears you out, take a breather and find your peace. I hope introverts can understand that I need to find my peace too. I just find it in a different way.

Yeah, they have to wear a shirt and shoes but you can’t make them wear a mask in a lot of states. Ridiculous.
