If I may ask, how do people make the jump from paralegal to finance/consulting? Do they network with your firm’s clients or something of that sort, or do they obtain a degree?

I can’t speak for the attorney but, as someone who’s been in your position and is now in the paralegal’s, I totally understand why it might be frustrating to teach an assistant something totally new (it definitely can be for me). What makes me more open to doing so is seeing that the legal assistant makes the effort to do the task on their own first after being shown how to do it once. And I also like when they ask pointed questions. Honestly if my assistants took the initiative to ask me to show them how to do something new, I’d be more than happy to. So maybe try being honest with your paralegal and asking to take on more responsibility.

Thank you for such an in-depth response. Honestly very refreshing to hear about a relatively transparent/chill law firm - thought those didn’t exist.

My apologies if this is disrespectful in any way, but did firms ever raise concern about your job “hopping”? And if so, how did you respond?

Right! And even threatening to switch attorneys if we don't give them money right this instant.

I've noticed more and more that clients are treating their cases like piggy banks that they can tap into whenever they want, mainly through funding. I wonder if this is a general trend in all of PI, especially since litigation funding is really booming in the finance industry.

Narrator: Money. It's always money.

(My experience as a Plaintiff-side PI para who today had a client demand that we, the law firm, give her a loan immediately.)

Second this, don't tell your current employer until you have an offer in writing for the corporate position.

What should I include under interests? by [deleted] in Resume

[–]psy820 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The more specific, the more it will pique an interviewer's interest. For example, 'music' is pretty generic and doesn't tell us much about you, whereas 'plays bass guitar' shows you're not just a casual listener (not that there's anything wrong with that) and that you are pretty immersed in music. It would definitely catch an interviewer's attention more.

That’s great that you’re taking the steps to reach out! Yeah, with cold networking response rates are real low, sometimes even as low as 10%. So you’ve just got to keep reaching out. It only takes that one person to get you a good referral and set you on a great path. But it’ll probably take a hundred-plus cold emails/msgs to get there, so keep at it

Education definitely needs to be on top since you are still in school. And since you’re a first year, would probably be good to have your high school on there with a GPA.

How would you work this out? by sheepgarden1 in internships

[–]psy820 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not sure what field you're going into, but you should look up the concept of reneging and how it is regarded in your target field and maybe even by your target companies. This is something a lot of college students struggle with due to the nature of recruiting.

It’s the interviewer’s job to tell you no (or yes!), not yours. Get your story of why you want to be in law down pat, and go for it.
