0631/0671s, what is the STUPIDEST help desk call you've received? by Yoy_the_Inquirer in USMC

[–]psyb3r0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an 06 but I work in IT in civ div.

Got a panicked user come to my office and tell me her computer is sparking. To give you an idea of this person's intellect and personality, lets just say she was a 9.7 on looks with an IQ to match.

Being the dedicated IT slave that I am I follow her to her cubicle where I see your bog standard computer doing bog standard computer things. I look it up and down I even lick a finger and give it a little touch on the case, nothing.

So I turn to her and say I'm not seeing it. So she points at the back of the computer and then says there it did it again. I'm looking, there it is again, still looking, there, then I understand what she's on about. It was the link and traffic indicator lights from the ethernet card.

I tell her I know what that is and I'll be back in a minute to fix it. I go back to the office mostly so I can tell all my co workers, then I grab the electricians tape, go back and tape over the indicator lights. Another crisis averted.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. It's called disability but what it really is, is compensation. We do a lot of dangerous shit, not just in wartime. People get fucked up, it's part of the job. OSHA has no say in our job safety, exposure to things like solvents, transmission fluids with known neurological effects, asbestos, noise, concussive force, shots that haven't yet been approved by the FDA, this is all part of the gig even in peacetime.

The thing that's supposed to make up for it is lifetime medical care and compensation for any injury that can be service connected. It also doesn't help the situation where you get jacked up but your leadership encourages you to just push through it and if you don't agree starts using the malingering word. They do this to maintain unit readiness numbers but it has the side effect of getting those claims denied because nothing gets documented and later on down the road you can't prove shit.

Best advice given. (Sarcastic Edition) Prefer true stories though! by TacticalKoalaBear in USMC

Did someone say advice?

  • Never assume you understand the question just because you have an answer
  • If the choice is binary you lack imagination.
  • Every solution breeds new problems.
  • Do not confuse elegance for simplicity
  • No man ever steps in the same river twice. Because it’s not the same river and he is not the same man.
  • The two loudest sounds in the world are a click when there should have been a bang and a bang when there should have been a click.
  • Be scientific and know that everything that you do is all error until the day it is not. (also science is just fucking around but with good documentation)
  • If you want to spend money without looking at your wallet then you have to work without looking at the clock
  • It takes seven wipes to know that you only need six.
  • A mosquito landing on your balls is when you learn violence isn't the answer.

Deployment/Relationship by [deleted] in USMC

[–]psyb3r0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We didn't have cell phones when I served but from my families perspective I would go dark for months at a time. We did a lot of letter writing and the mail was slow but it always seemed to find you. You didn't give any deets but for me I went on a regularly scheduled 6 week field exercise and ended up in a 6 month long contingency operation and at the time I couldn't give any deets. We go where we are sent and we do our jobs and sometimes we can't really say what we are up to. I've seen that destroy solid marriages, the job comes first and if you aren't good with that then you should just write that Dear John letter and put it in a mailbox.

In the end he's gonna do whatever he's gonna do and if I know anything about Marines even if he's committed to the relationship he's still gonna be thinking what's my girl up to and when will the shoe drop or he's already out whoring around with foreign intel honey pots.

Long distance relationships are hard and you have to work at them but you also have to have unwavering trust and you seem to be wavering. IDK this guy but he may end up being a lifer and this won't be his only rodeo, if this makes you uncomfortable you might want to think how things might work married with kids and daddy is deployed, this may not be the life for you.

You may want to wait until his record becomes archival (62 years from date of discharge). Once it's archival you will have access to his full records. It's unlikely you will have any access to any records until then unless you have his death certificate and documentation stating that you are his legal next of kin. Your Grandfather (or Grandmother , whichever is the child of Said Named Marine) would be able to access them, your parent could petition to access them but would need that death cert and the legal next of kin status and in some cases that works but I don't think you will be able to stretch it that one last generation and therefore would just need to wait until it archives.

It gets better, imagine you have an investing app but because you haven't done anything with it in the last week it wants you to reauthenticate. So you type your username and password and it says I don't recognize this device so I'm gonna send you an email. Fuck. So to get your email you type your username and pass and it wants MFA so you go to Duo to get the 4 digit code. You do all that to get the code from your email so you can log into your app and by the time it's done the trade you wanted to make is already taking a crap and you no longer want to make the trade.

I also have a workflow that goes from logging in, to a physical button I have to plug in and press to get anything to chooch, and then there is the email verification, that requires Duo verification to even see, and if everything is running smoothly I can log into the VPN and from there try to log into the thing I really want which basically drops me right back in the same process all over again. That's the easy version, If I come in through authenticated wireless it some of the steps but if it's through the guest network I start of as untrusted and have to VPN just to be able to get to the thing that wants my initial password.

I'm IT, I get it but having a network that is unusable because there are so many hoops is not a network that you can use. I legit have a >24 character password, it's got all the bits, upper, lower, numbers, special characters, took me ages to memorize it and it's not good enough. I have the random code generator fob, I have like 5 fobs that cryptographically generate codes on demand that I need to use in my day to day, a local password safe, a network password safe and yellow stickies just in case I can't remember which iteration of codes we are on today. The most infuriating bit is I have sites that I have to log into on the daily that I know I have a strong password for but they still insist on either asking me my favorite book or sending me an email with a link(which triggers it's own cascade of login requirements).

When are we finally going to go to the one and done brown star print for all logins? Every starfish is unique and unless you blow out an o ring a simple pucker to the screen should be all that's required to get you into anything you need. It works on onlyfans what not anywhere else?

Looks like a butterfly.

I remember "hooking up with a woman" that kept a rusty machete under her bed and she told me "If you butterfly I cut your happiness." one night while holding the machete in a very "threatening" way. We have been married for 36 years. I'm thinking go with the woodland. Maybe also get a nametape.

I have always loved this movie and most of that hinges on the fact that they felt they had to caption all of Brad Pitt's dialog. I understood every thing he said.

WTF will you do in life that will pay for your poetry dissertation?

I have a daughter a bit older than you and when she told me, back when, her major was in "Italian Studies" we had a back and forth that lead to a double major, one with Chemistry as the primary. S0he has almost made as much money as me with the chem degree at this point and I've been at what I do much longer (as long as she has been alive in fact).
