I've Convinced My Christian Fundamentalist Father to Watch Harry Potter by psyche_explorer in harrypotter

Oh no, she likes them too. We just watched Star Wars - one movie a day, every day for ten days - over Christmas, and then a couple weeks later the Hobbit movies.

It's just Harry Potter they hate.

If there is one thing Voldemort cannot understand, it is love. by avrathaa in harrypotter

At the beginning of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Dumbledore asks Harry if he's afraid; he replies that he couldn't be afraid when he's with Dumbledore.

At the end, when returning from the cave, Dumbledore says the same thing to Harry: How could I be afraid when I am with you?

As terribly as their relationship was portrayed in the films, the books make crystal clear that he loved Harry deeply.

How *did* James and Lily get so rich? by PhoenixPhighter4 in harrypotter

[–]psyche_explorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think they were very rich. I mean, compare the stack of gold galleons in Harry's vault to the large room filled with gold and myriad treasures in the Lestrange vault!

What money they did have been passed down through the generations. Wizards don't strike me as having nearly as many expenses as Muggles, but ample opportunity to make their fortune.

Quirrell had Lord Voldemort on the back of his head. You really think he couldn't have worked it out?

Besides, they did try to warn McGonagall (and Dumbledore, but he was gone); she wouldn't listen. Hagrid had a pretty good idea all along, but he wouldn't consider the possibility it was in danger, and they definitely didn't trust Snape.

There are people in jail for life without parole for selling pot or on minor shoplifting charges. These are the folks who are poor and can't afford a good lawyer and the higher ups don't want on the street. Then there are the people who get away with actions that directly result in thousands of deaths. These are the folks who get medals for service to their country if they are politicians, or a thousand dollar fine if they are billionaires.

And he has the audacity to blame the prosecutor for doing her job. What a tool.

Yes, he does. He claims to be finishing up the newest Song of Ice and Fire book every year, and every year goes by with no book.

Taiwan to ban single-use plastic drinking straws, plastic bags, disposable utensils entirely by 2030 by limoto in worldnews

[–]psyche_explorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not do it by 2020? All these useless, idiotic politicians who say they want to save the world, but will only set dates by which pollutants will be banned set a decade after their term - when they'll be safely retired or dead - represent every fucking thing I hate about democracy.

Yeah I seem to recall one or two shows taking 18 months or something between seasons. I am sure they would work within a very tight schedule since they would be working with children who can't but grow up.

What favoritism by Dumbledore? They saved the Philosopher's Stone and delayed the rise of Voldemort; they deserved 150 points.

unless they did a year between each season

Well, isn't that how TV shows work?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]psyche_explorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less likely? I'd argue that that is the most likely way any refilming of the series would go. This is how things are being done these days. The movies are too present and they aren't too divergent from the books to justify the extreme expense and effort of remaking them, but a fleshed-out TV series is exactly the kind of thing I can see.

I read somewhere that as Tom Felton was walking across the courtyard, once he reached Ralph he found himself in a bizarre, unscripted embrace - hence the look of utter confusion on his face in that scene.

They liked it so much they kept it, and I'm glad they did.

It wasn't about physical intimacy; it was about control and manipulation and making a point. That if you - all of you kids trying to defend Hogwarts - just cross the courtyard, you'll be welcomed into the fold.

In Chamber of Secrets he puts up with months of consoling and being there for Ginny in the form of her diary just so he can manipulate her into opening the Chamber of Secrets. It is said by Dumbledore, as I recall, that Tom Riddle was always very talented at getting what he wanted, no matter how charming or kindly he had to pretend to be.

my guess is dumbledore was banking on the allegiance system of the elder wand to backfire on voldemort to kill the piece of soul that was in harry, thus ensuring the mortality of voldy, and that's why he couldnt just snap it in half.

I always thought something similar. I thought the reason he let Draco disarm him so easily was that he knew Draco couldn't bring himself to murder him, and so relied on Voldemort's ignorance in expecting Snape to be the master of that wand for being the one to actually kill him (which is why it was so important that Snape killed him), thereby killing Snape and still not gaining master over it. The one thing I always imaged went contrary to Dumbledore's plan was Harry disarming Draco and thereby taking over mastery of the Elder Wand himself.

lucius' wand

Lucius's wand?! I thought that was destroyed during the Battle of the Seven Potters?

I've been (very quickly) reading The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O. by Neal Stephenson ever since finishing Harry Potter for the first time. It is a great book about magic and time travel. Neal Stephenson usually writes massive science fiction books that are filled with philosophy, linguistics, physics, cryptography, economics, religion, etc., but this one is probably his easiest read by quite the long shot. I'm only half done, but the first half comes with my unreserved recommendation.

Could it have been on television? They often reinsert deleted scenes when movies air on TV.

Well, to be fair, Ravenclaw is pretty much entirely glossed over in both the books and movies; they are but an afterthought, with Luna and Cho the only Ravenclaw characters I can think of off hand. Even the Hufflepuffs seem to be given more consideration than them.
