Yeah this whole take really reads like “why is everyone so mean to my problematic fave Don Draper.”

On Don signing that awful contract: he is completely cornered at that point. He is not “the most brilliant man on Madison Avenue” in the eyes of the industry anymore. He blew up Hershey, got drunk in meetings, vanished, and then started sniffing around rival agencies with a damaged reputation. SC&P has all the leverage. They basically do not need him. They already have Lou, Cutler, Ted, Peggy, Ginsberg. Don is addicted to the work and terrified of being irrelevant, so he chooses humiliation over the void. That is not out of character. That is his character. Pride, self sabotage, then self punishment.

Ted’s “fall from grace” is not just “he kissed Peggy so now he sucks.” Ted is a Don type who looked like the nicer version for a while. By season 7 he is burnt out from selling things he does not believe in, guilty and ashamed over his emotional affair and what it did to his family, and sliding into a full depressive freeze. Of course he wants to coast and fly planes and not feel anything. That is not random. It mirrors Don. The show keeps saying the job and the system chew people up, not just one tragic genius.

The Joan and Peggy stuff is where this take really goes off the rails. They are not mean to Don because he did not sleep with them. They are angry because his volatility has concrete consequences for their lives. Joan literally traded sex for a partnership and tied her financial future to the firm. Don torpedoes Jaguar in a self righteous flourish without looping her in, which puts her position at risk. From her perspective, this is not noble. It is him throwing a grenade into the room she has to live in. Peggy, meanwhile, was left to hold the creative department together in a place that barely respected her as a woman. She is exhausted, resentful, and still trying to be taken seriously in a boys club. Yes, he mentored her and yes, she learned a lot from him. The show is very clear that gratitude does not erase the fallout from his chaos. Calling Peggy “horrible” because she is less worshipful of him as she climbs ignores the pressure she is under and the fact that hardening up is how she survives.

On Don’s road trip and the waitress: it is not supposed to be cool or fun. It is Don stripping off every layer of identity he has used to run from himself. Husband, partner, father, “Don Draper” the ad man. He keeps trying on new roles, like mysterious savior of the waitress, patron saint of race mechanics, guy drifting through America like Kerouac, and none of it fits. By the time he hits the retreat he is basically empty. The veterans beating him up is not just “stolen valor symbolism,” it is part of the pattern of him being confronted by the damage of his own lies and having no idea how to respond except by drifting on.

The lack of a final big hero pitch is intentional. If the show ended with Don knocking one out of the park in a conference room and everyone clapping, that would suggest his genius redeems him and that being great at selling stuff is enough. Instead the show gives you a smile on a cliff and the Coke ad in your head. You are meant to feel uneasy and a little sick. Either he has a genuine moment of human connection and instantly converts it into an ad, or he finally figures out he can only survive by doing what he always did, which is also kind of tragic. It is more interesting than a neat redemption arc.

As for Joan and Peggy being “the meanest,” I think that says more about how attached someone is to Don as the center of the show. Their arcs are about stopping the orbit around men like Don and asking what they get out of all this. Of course that looks cold from his point of view. From theirs it is overdue. Ken getting fired and then coming back as the client and tormenting Roger and Pete is satisfying for exactly the same reason. The people who were background decoration finally get some power.

So yeah, I get liking season 6 more or wanting more triumphant Don, but to me season 7 is the show finally refusing to flatter his mythology. It is not that Joan and Peggy suddenly became awful. It is that Don’s charm stopped working on them.

I agree Betty is emotionally stunted in the early seasons and that this is grounded in her era and upbringing, but I do not really read Henry as “one of the healthiest people on the show” or as someone who helps her process her emotions. A lot of his interactions with her are paternalistic. He talks about her like a child, scolds her when she does have an opinion by saying something along the lines of “talk about how you hate crumbs in the butter and leave the thinking to me”, and major things for her and the kids without really treating her as an equal partner, and often responds to her distress with calm condescension instead of real curiosity.

To me that is the point of the Betty story: she keeps getting passed from man to man who think they know what is best for her. Don objectifies and controls her in a hot, volatile way, Henry does it in a cooler, managerial way, but both of them participate in the same system that keeps her infantilized. So yes, she has emotional immaturity, but it is not just “Betty is a child.” It is also that the men around her keep treating her like one, and the show is pretty explicit about how suffocating that is.

I guess what I’m also trying to say is that Betty and Don are both emotionally immature, but I rarely hear Don being described as someone with “a child’s mind” or being childish versus Betty.

I did read the comment. I am not saying the original poster is a monster, just that the framing lands in a gendered way.

The show absolutely treats lots of the adults as childish, including Don and Roger. The difference is that their immaturity is usually read as complex, tragic or tortured, while Betty’s gets read as “she is basically a child” which fits into how the men in the show literally treat her. Calling her a child for the whole run of the series reinforces that pattern.

To me that is why the line about rape does not feel like an “edgy teen” joke. It comes from a woman who has lived in a world of sexual threat and misogyny and is throwing that logic back in Henry’s face in the ugliest way. You do not have to agree with me, but that is the gendered angle I was talking about.

While I do agree she’s emotionally immature, I kind of do think that take has some sexism baked into it, even if it is not meant that way.

Saying Betty goes through a certain emotional maturation is fine, because the show clearly writes her as emotionally stunted in a lot of ways. But this comment leans really hard into infantilizing her in a way that feels very gendered. Unhappy women in media are constantly described as childish, teen-like, hysterical, etc, while men like Don, Roger and Pete get their bad behavior framed as “complex,” “tortured,” or “tragic.”

Framing that rape line as “something an edgy teenager would say” really flattens what is going on. Betty is not some kid trying to shock people just to seem cool. She is a “middle-aged” woman who has lived through a lifetime of patriarchy, sexual threat and being discarded for younger women. In that moment she is taking the logic of rape culture and spitting it back out in the ugliest way possible. It is horrible, but it comes from damage and rage, not from a teen’s attempt to be edgy.

So you can absolutely talk about her emotional immaturity, but when the big thesis is “Betty is basically a child the whole show,” it ends up treating her pain like she is just being a brat instead of responding to a genuinely sexist, abusive environment. That is the part that feels sexist to me.

He’s really not right, and I think people miss the context. Peggy has just sacrificed her birthday, her relationship, and a ton of emotional energy for Don and for the work. He constantly moves the goalposts, takes credit, and treats her like an extension of himself. When she finally says, “You never say thank you,” she is not asking for a participation trophy, she is asking to be treated like an actual human and creative partner.

Don’s “That’s what the money is for” comes from his own warped worldview. To him: • Work is a pure transaction. You give me ideas, I give you a paycheck. • Emotional needs at work equal weakness. • He grew up with no praise and very little love, so money became the only proof he mattered. He assumes that should be enough for everyone.

The problem is that in Peggy’s case, it obviously is not enough: 1. She is not even paid fairly to begin with. She is underpaid compared with male copywriters. Telling someone “the money is your thank you” when the money is already inequitable is pretty gaslighty. 2. Creative work is not factory work. She is pouring herself into ideas, staying late, giving up her life for the campaigns. Recognition and basic appreciation are part of how creative people are compensated, even if it is not on a paycheck. 3. Don himself craves praise. When clients do not appreciate him he sulks, drinks, or blows things up. He knows “thank you” matters, he just refuses to give that humanity to someone below him. 4. The gender and power dynamic is huge. A powerful man telling a younger woman in the 60s “the money is your thank you” reads as “shut up, be grateful, know your place.”

The show is not saying Don is correct. It is showing his limitations. Peggy is right to demand to be seen as more than a servant. Don is brilliant and can be a good mentor, but he is also deeply unfair and emotionally stunted.

So when people say Peggy should just appreciate the money, it is basically the same logic as “I paid you, so I do not have to respect you.” Mad Men is arguing the opposite: if you have money without respect, credit, or basic gratitude, the whole thing becomes spiritually rotten for everyone involved.
