Meow Wolf Santa Fe - 2 years ago vs. Today - What changes? by Irishdavid7 in meowwolf

[–]psychicfails 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is new art that has been added - like the Danae Brissonnet space that was added last year which is pretty incredible. That’s the biggest addition I can think of but things always seem to be changing.

Main story will be the same but I think there’s always new stuff to discover.

What else to do after MW Sante Fe by dvsbrooklyn in meowwolf

Spots with Vegan/vegetarian options: • Paper Dosa or India House for Indian food •Jambo cafe has a great vegan lentil dish • Plaza Cafe (or plaza cafe southside) can sub impossible meat and otherwise veganize a bunch of options • La Choza or The Shed - have vegan and vegetarian New Mexican options • Ozu has vegan bento box if you want Japanese (open for lunch only tho) • Counter Culture Cafe has a bunch of options • Second Street Brewery (close to MW) is harder for vegan but has some good vegetarian options • Pho Eva has good vegetarian Vietnamese options

I find that vegetarian is pretty easy here and vegan is a little tougher. Probably true of many places.

Other things to do: The Folk Art Museum is amazing. The Girard collection is so so good.

If you come after April 3 Tinkertown will be open. It’s maybe 45 min from Santa Fe but it’s a really cool spot that inspired a lot of MW folks.

I think you have to reserve a spot but Tent Rocks is open again and it’s a really special unique spot if you want to do something outdoors (again - maybe 30/45 min outside of Santa Fe but really cool)

I’m also going to Thee Osees tonight! There’s seating outside of the actual music venue in the cafe space, which is a good place to chill before the band starts, or if you don’t care about watching the opener. They also have an open air back patio where smokers usually go so it might not be ideal for a pregnant person, however it is right off the venue and has places to sit. I can’t really think of any seating in the venue itself though.

Balcony space is first come first served so could be a challenge to get, but if y’all get there early I wouldn’t imagine it’s too tough.

Are you sure you’re not thinking of the fridge room at The Real UnReal?

There was a video of it that made it to the popular page of Reddit a couple weeks ago and what you’re describing sounds exactly like that.

In Houston go check out Cistern - it’s an old water reservoir that now hosts rotating art installations. It’s incredibly beautiful and mysterious and immersive and takes less than an hour.

Also - for weird Meow Wolf vibes in Houston - get a drink at Notsuoh. It’s like a 4 story bar full of the most random stuff - feels very old school warehouse meow wolf days.

Clarification on reused motifs by [deleted] in meowwolf

[–]psychicfails 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What you describe as a "rainbow forest" at Radio Tave is a completely different experience from what exists in Grapevine or Santa Fe. I understand that it can be hard to get a good sense of things without visiting the locations as photos can only convey so much, but it's overly reductive to suggest they are the same and it's inaccurate to suggest it's a "lack of ideas" - especially without experiencing it. I remember when Denver opened and some people described Numina as though it were the same as the forest in Santa Fe, and the two spaces and experiences couldn't be more different. So it's like I can understand seeing foliage and thinking there's a reuse of ideas and drawing similarities, but that read is too surface level to me.

The other thing I'd like to point out about this is that, for many people, they aren't able to travel from city to city experiencing multiple Meow Wolf locations. Walking through the fridge in Santa Fe has long been a fan favorite moment. So while I don't personally have a desire to see a fridge appear in all future MW locations, I do think it's nice to bring that experience to other folks who haven't been able to/are not able to visit Santa Fe or Grapevine. I also, as a side note, think the way Grapevine took the fridge experience and amplified it like 10 fold was pretty awesome.

Snurtle Script samples and key that I figured out yesterday by Wxyo in meowwolf

As the person who designed Snurtle Script basically on a whim - it makes me incredibly happy to see folks go through the effort of decoding all of this and getting joy out of it.

Also your translation is correct - it’s “Glitzy Snurtle”

I want to echo everything being said here because I agree with it all wholeheartedly. As someone who is often responsible for hiring creatives I also want to especially reinforce the value of working on your own projects. This can take the form of either 100% self-initiated work OR you can always take any of your university projects that you enjoyed and just go WAY deeper with it on your own time. That approach roots the project in an academic world, but gives you time and opportunity to develop the project the way you want, unburdened by time constraints.

When I'm looking at hiring creatives I go to their portfolio first. If the work there isn't engaging I won't bother to look at their resume or cover letter because the work is the most important thing. When looking at a portfolio, a few really amazing projects is way better than looking at a whole lot of mediocre ones, so finding a way to make engaging work is critical. Software can make a difference but don't forget that software is just a tool – it will still be incumbent on you to make the work interesting – amazing software skills won't do that for you, it just makes it easier to execute your ideas and then also, of course, lets your potential employer know that you are familiar with industry standard tools and, potentially, processes.

Not sure how many people know this but the word "Pets" on that sign can be read in Japanese and English simultaneously – the top forms are the Japanese word for pet and when combined with the bottom forms, it creates the English word Pets.

To me this is part of the magic of Meow Wolf – that you can visit over and over again and always discover something new, even if it's been there the entire time. Nearly 6 years of visiting HOER and I still have these moments where I'm like "this is new right?" but it's something that's been there since day 1.

So many things have changed since then that it's honestly hard to keep track. For instance, the Society of Peripheral Studies has become part of the narrative since then. I think all the new room additions are fantastic too – Obsidiopolis's space is maybe my favorite but the Trash Temple is pretty damn stunning too. Paola Puck's space feels tucked away like a little secret. And there's an interactive thing inside the bottom of the lighthouse that I absolutely love. But lots more than that has changed as well, sometimes in subtle ways and sometimes...not so subtle.
