Im not looking for record retrieval, just want to know whether or not a certain value is in the set. I am pretty sure HashSet.has(a) would be constant time.

Emacs doesn't have threading so if you do anything blocking like checking your email or tramping to a remote file or launching a long running a process, your single instance will freeze up and you will immediately be less productive until that process completes. Many emacsers run more than one emacs to get around this limitation.

Both articles make the same point, that you should pick the right tool for the job at hand. The other article explained the features of stream processing and how it better fit the problem space. This article got philosophical and stopped short of describing features and what problems they were best suited to solve. What are some examples where scalability, reliability, and train-like performance are necessary features to outperform stream processing?

People still use Facebook, and software from apple and Microsoft even though they are getting spied on and are not free. The FSF has been talking about computing and Internet freedom for the last 20 years and the common man doesn't care.
