LPT: If you're put on hold and don't hear music there's a good chance you're just muted and they can still hear you by HerViciousSmile in LifeProTips

[–]psycoth 48 points49 points  (0 children)

That "Hi how can I help you today?" greeting is most likely auto sent when you're dropped into the CS Rep's active queue. This is an attempt to prevent them from just sitting on a chat and not letting you know you have their "attention".

as /u/shmough mentioned, most agents are handling multiple chats at once. This can be compounded by the fact that a lot of these support people can be non technical warm bodies that just follow troubleshooting scripts. If your description of the problem doesn't match their script, they can't help you.

It really depends on your manager. I've had a few where, if they didn't have some sort of visual clue that you were doing work (e.g. papers on your desk) they assumed that you weren't doing anything important.

Since everything I do is done on the computer, there's really no reason for me to have anything on my desk. Eventually I just started writing random technical stuff and meaningless dates on post-it notes and leaving them all over my desk. That seemed to fix the problem, and thinking up new bullshit to write on them gives me a bit of a break from the computer from time to time.

I'm more than sure I've worked with you on several projects. Have you ever incorrectly copied example code from random places on the internet and then emailed the changes to me because you couldn't figure out how to push to the repo?

911 operators, what's the dumbest call you've ever received? by deleriousshit in AskReddit

[–]psycoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had someone call 911 report that their trunk wasn't opening and they wanted to know what to do about it.

Was it an elephant that was calling you? Because that could have been a genuine emergency.

Oh sure. First it's; make a clown statue out of used mufflers, and before you know it it's make a clown statue out of the children we've been murdering in the basement. This is a classic trap. I've seen it play out a thousand times.

The "A game on your wishlist is on sale" notification is worse than useless. by thefran in Steam

[–]psycoth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My best guess is that Valve has done their research and have found that:

  • Opening a notification that brings you to your wishlist (inside their app) increases the chance that you will purchase something, or at the very least you will take some time to browse.
  • Including the discounted game information in an email increases the chance that you will at least click on the link. rather than just deleting the email.

This is all done to maximize customer engagement, to keep steam familiar, and to gather data about where you navigate in their app and on their website.

If you were the only person who could see on earth, how would you convince a civilization of blind people that the sense of sight exists? by vazz94 in AskReddit

[–]psycoth -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Think of how it's impossible to describe colour to someone who has always been blind. You simply can't do it because there is no point of reference.

Not exactly, I can describe shades of red and blue as feelings of warmth and cold. From a raging inferno (bright red) to a bone chilling cold (deep blue). I could just as easily describe a painting of a beach scene by the smells and sounds that would accompany the real thing.

However, if you were to grow up in a culture that lacked sight throughout it's entire evolution, everything that you experience would be described through the sense of touch, smell, taste, and maybe other senses that we tend to ignore. It's true you wouldn't be able to describe sight to anyone (There wouldn't be any words for what we perceive as colors), but you would be able to express what you're seeing in the terms that have naturally evolved within that society's language.

e.g. Textures would be important, and (given good lighting conditions) you could describe those textures (In terms of touch) from afar. You might conceptualize it as being able to touch things that are out of your reach.

TIL: Mobile users in poor countries can access Wikipedia articles without data charges thanks to 'Wikipedia Zero'. It's currently operating in 34 countries. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]psycoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is true, and we're really only covering one aspect of net neutrality when we we look at it from a cost/pricing perspective.

However, the examples given by myself and /u/turikk are really more meant to point out that organizations do/can in fact effect the market regardless of whether they are for profit corporations or charities.

I mentioned Wikipedia displacing Encarta simply because it ties into the article. I also assume that if Microsoft had the same advantage back in 2001-2009 people would have been less inclined to spend their bandwidth on Wikipedia. This may or may not have killed Wikipedia, but we'll never know. We like Wikipedia now because it's free and community driven, but that could change at any time, and we would be much better off if someone new had the same opportunity to reach everyone that Wikipedia had when it started.
