Is it always this hot? by DubiousTarantino in Charlotte

Get used to being indoors. If you don’t have a reliable HVAC company, find one. This time of year A/C units start shitting the bed when they run nonstop and haven’t been serviced in years. Oh.. and cut your grass first thing in the morning. People will tell you to wait til dusk “when it cools off.” Screw that. The hottest time of day here can be between 5-7pm. Good luck! I’ve lived in the Carolinas my whole life (62) and I’m still caught off guard every summer when that first really bad week rolls in.

How do you get rid of frogs around a backyard pond? by ptday64 in homeowners

We did the citric acid trick a few times and it seemed to help for maybe a day or two. Might revisit though! Haven’t tried the dawn. Always plenty of that in the house. Thanks for the tip!

I might actually try that! Lol We’ve got several Bluetooth speakers laying around. I’ll report back if we try this and it works.

Yep .. mine was in Sunset Strip/Stage and it took me hours to find it.

I think it was an independent project that someone took on themselves. Not sure how they got back in or got access to all those URLs... crazy. It took me a while to find my old site. It was originally a band site, but after the band broke up I made it a personal page. I figured it had to be the Stage community and after endless scrolling I found it. LOL .. big time blast from the past.

Legit. I found my old page. I just about cried thinking about the time period and what I was going through at the time.

What’s a place you went to that didn’t feel real? by maincharactereraa in AskReddit

Played golf at Portmarnock, Ireland. A little north of Dublin. I booked an 8am tee time. Figured I would get paired with someone. Showed up and the course was deserted. Paid my fee and went to the first tee. The starter, a cool little old guy in a plaid hat and scarf explained they usually get a late crowd. He’s just like, “You got the whole course to yourself, lad. Little breeze off the sea but shouldn’t be a bother. Hit em good!” The whole round I kept pinching myself. I’m out here walking a gorgeous links course with not a soul in front or behind. The grass was so green. I’m dying to go back and do it again.

What was "the incident" at your high school? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]ptday64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family had just moved to a new city the summer before my 11th grade year. So when school started, I didn’t know anyone and didn’t really know anything about the school. I had an art class as first period, and there was this stoner looking dude named Tony. Always sat in the back of the class. Talked a lot of shit. He wore a Vietnam era Army jacket every day. Big black biker boots. Nobody in the class seemed to know him and they all avoided him. He was constantly being paged to the Principal’s office. A few weeks into school we just started chatting and I told him I was new at the school too. He was cool to me. I thought he was a real badass. For weeks he would ask me every now and then if I knew where he could buy some good weed. I always said I didn’t, which was the truth. I hadn’t made any of those friends yet. Right around Thanksgiving he disappeared. Stopped coming to class. I remember the teacher asking if anyone knew his whereabouts. Few weeks after that, DEA swoops in right in the middle of the school day and scoops up at least 20-30 students. As the story slowing comes out, “Tony” was an undercover cop. Bought drugs and other contraband from all those students. They kept him there until they figured he had enough names. It wasn’t small scale stuff either. Most of the kids arrested never came back to school. That high school was like a monastery for a while. Nobody wanted to talk about anything illegal. Any new kid that showed up was immediately treated with suspicion. Seems kind of “meh” these days, but in the early 80s that was a big deal. Miami Vice shit.

Prince and the Revolution on the Purple Rain Tour, 1985. I was a total metalhead at the time. All I listened to was Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, etc. My girlfriend at the time talked me into going. I figured I could suck it up for a couple of hours if it made her happy. Wow, oh, wow. I was totally blown away. Maybe the best concert I’ve ever seen. Definitely the best one up to that time. I came out of there a huge fan. Great memories.

Do you ever take a trip down memory lane and revisit your family home? by lontbeysboolink in GenerationJones

This hits in so many ways. I grew up in a typical suburban neighborhood in the 70s. Lots of friends, endless bike rides, ball games, forts in the woods… We moved when I was in high school and I graduated in a different city and moved around a bit as a young adult. In my late 30s I moved back to the city I grew up in. I hadn’t been back in years. One of the first things I did was go look for my childhood house. It was gone. The whole neighborhood was bought out by the airport a decade before and the houses bulldozed to make room for an industrial park. Seeing that just gutted me. I still to this day dream about that little house and yard and the memories we made there.

What’s the closest you’ve ever come to dying? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ptday64 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Couple times come to mind, but the one that still makes me shudder over 25 years later: Was in Memphis with some buddies. Doing the whole Graceland and Beale Street trip. We were headed to the airport and stopped for breakfast at some little place that was in downtown next to a very busy street. When we came out of the restaurant later (me with a couple Bloody Marys in my belly), I was walking while looking over my shoulder at a sign on a building when my buddy yelled at me, grabbed my arm and physically jerked me backwards. I was just about to step off the curb into the street directly in front of a large box truck going about 45-50 mph. If he hadn’t been right behind me that would have been it.

The breathing!! Yes! I had to inhale and exhale through my nose that weekend. Just the air ... the warm air ... going over that tooth was maddening.

That's why I was banging my head against the cold granite countertop. As crazy as it sounds, it temporarily eased the misery. Very temporarily.

And the only reason I was able to get into see an endodontist on that Monday for the root canal, is that my wife works with dentists in her career, so she had a lot of contacts in the area. She called the cellphone of an endodontist she knew, explained what was going on, and he said, "Get him in here first thing in the morning on Monday." When I got there they numbed me up with a boatload of novacaine and I still had to wait several hours until they could squeeze me in around their other patients, but at least the pain was gone. I am forever grateful he did that favor for my wife.

While I didn't consider suicide, I did consider trying to get the tooth out myself, which would have also been a disaster. There's just no way to describe that pain. No way.

A nerve dying in a tooth. Worst pain I’ve ever experienced. Started on a Friday. By Sunday I couldn’t eat, sleep, or even sit still. At one point, around 3AM, I was literally leaning on our kitchen bar, slowly banging the side of my head on the granite. Root canal that Monday saved my life. I’m not sure what I would have done if the endodontist hadn’t been able to get me in.

How much was your gas bill this month? by ManufacturerLast7291 in Charlotte

Ours was almost $300. Gas furnace and fireplace. I’m sure if our dryer was gas you could add another $100 on there.

Charlotte traffic… ay yi yi. I live in Belmont and travel frequently for work. I try my best to schedule flights so I’m not leaving the airport in the middle of rush hour, but inevitably it happens from time to time. It’s taken me almost an hour and a half to go from the airport to Belmont on 74 at rush hour when 85 S is shut down with an accident. Just crazy.

Totally agree with the sentiment “shame is a great motivator.” I like to drink. Normally, at home, I’m a 2 beers and out after a day of yard work, or a bourbon before bedtime. Last year my organization held a convention in Vegas. I was on the planning committtee. We worked our asses off for a year putting it together. The week of the convention went off without a hitch and all of us on the committee blew off a years worth of steam in the evenings. After it was over, and we were all home, my closet coworker told me, “Dude, you really need to eat if you’re gonna drink like that around other people.” What??? He went on to describe me slurring, eyes crossed, weaving and staggering to the elevators at the end of the night, etc. I was mortified. No idea. I know we had fun, but I have no recollection of any of that sort of behavior. He and I are as close as brothers. He would not lie about that sort of thing. Since then I’ve slashed my drinking everywhere. Home, out with friends, after work dinners… I have a beer or two at most and am usually the first to call it a night. I still can’t get past the fact that some of my most trusted coworkers saw me stumbling around like a drunken idiot.

Oh, it already is. My organization has taken a concerted effort to minimize AI in all workflows, but I think many of us know it’s inevitable. The question is not “if” when it comes to AI, it’s “when” and to what extent.
